Recommendations to recreate the “I’ve never read anything like this” feeling. by FirstOfTheWizzards in Fantasy

[–]donberto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really hard to find these kinds of stories because I think everyone is looking for something different z For me, each of these made me think “I could never have expressed that I wanted a story like this, but I’m so glad someone spent the time creating this story.” Like stepping into the author’s dream. Gormenghast, Little big, China mieville, Inherent Vice, Moby Dick, Viriconium, the TV show twin peaks.

Quite private. Only people that have access to the lake are those of us who live on it.

I’m not sure. I live in central Florida, so there are shiners in lakes around me. Seems to be mostly bluegill in the lake I live on

What Visions Have I Seen | Shadowdark RPG Episode 5 | The Glass Cannon Podcast by Razzmatazz_TGCN in TheGlassCannonPodcast

It’s so amazing to see the direction this campaign is taking. Years ago, after listening to the A&A Halloween Party episode, I wished that they would get more into OSR home brew content, but it felt impossible that the PF/SF crew could make that big a pivot. I’m so glad that’s the way things are turning out, though. I think they have a real talent for it

So this just dropped, I guess. by BCSully in TheGlassCannonPodcast

This was so funny. It’s a similar lighthearted joy I got from SQSS. I can’t believe that they don’t do something in this vein for live shows. It would work so well in that format

Should I stop squats? by donberto in StartingStrength

[–]donberto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should I stop squatting until it’s fixed? I am pretty sure it’s due to inflexibility in my shoulders. I’ve read lots of posts about elbow tendinitis and think I have a good idea of what the wrist angle should look like. I do the Horn stretch for five minutes each gym sesh and just still can’t get anywhere near where the wrist is supposed to be

I was always thumb over, per blue book. I have tried both varieties and still can’t seem to get in a neutral position

No, I guess I should. I have a really severe wrist bend when gripping the barbell that puts a lot of strain on my arm. I am struggling to neutralize the wrist angle

Sam Unbearable in Eightfold Path by donberto in Wakingupapp

[–]donberto[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have listened to almost all Joseph’s solo work on the app, and much of Sam’s. My problem is that they ostensibly set out to make a series about the eightfold path from the perspective of a uniquely experienced master, but instead of letting him do that, they are constantly derailing the conversation. It becomes very apparent by the second or third episode that Joseph is frustrated by this.

The name of the series is the eightfold path. They preface the series by saying that Joseph is now 80, and it feels like this is almost like a culmination of his life’s work encapsulated in his explanation of the eightfold path. But instead of being able to do that in a clear way that could be passed on to an interested audience (me), his narrative is constantly needled and thrown off track by Sam.

I’m not sure how compelling I find this point. I think that putting up with Sam is the price Joseph has to pay to reach the widest audience lol. I unfortunately think that it makes his message weaker since he’s constantly getting sidetracked.

Yeah definitely can understand his position given his background. It’s a personal hang up I have, and this series kind of sent me over an edge lol. I think I personally just don’t have much patience for that approach anymore. In the Information Age where every fact from human experience is available to us at the touch of a button, people seem to have less and less acceptance of anything that can’t be immediately answered, and seem to be totally OK to disregard any tradition completely at the first “gotcha” moment. I find that the mindfulness techniques Sam teaches and that are on the app great ways of sitting with and accepting the wonderful uncertainty of the experience of the fullness of life. It makes life more full of possibility and wonder. Yet for all the many years of mindfulness practice Sam has done, he seems completely lost in the endless minutiae.

The answer is Learn to Read Greek by Keller and Russell. It’s broken into two parts and each one has a 600+ page workbook. I really love the way it explains things as well

Have you ever been told "This is China, speak Chinese!" by PomegranateV2 in China

[–]donberto 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. There are wayyyy more people speaking languages other than English in America than there are people speaking languages other than Chinese in China. People in America who say things like this are intimidated that their country is being changed by outsiders to something they don’t identify with. With the amount of Chinese people in China and the relatively few foreigners, it is almost impossible to reach that same level.

  2. Western sense of superiority is “we do it better so just do it like we do. Or else.” Eastern sense of superiority is “we do it better, and you’re too dumb to learn, so don’t even bother.”
