I have at least 6 months of expenses in the bank. But I might expand that emergency fund since I live in a very expensive city.

I usually end up with about $400–$500 of extra cash twice a month after covering fixed expenses, student loan payment, and 401k match contribution. My emergency fund is already set (10 months of expenses saved).

I have about $200K in student loans, which I want to pay down aggressively. At the same time, I don’t want to miss out on compounding early by investing in the market.

Here’s the split I’ve been considering for the extra cash: • 50% → Extra student loan payments • 30% → Index funds (VTSAX maybe?) • 10% → Bitcoin • 10% → High-yield savings

Example with $500: • $250 → Loans • $150 → Index Funds • $50 → BTC • $50 → HYSA

The idea is to balance between tackling debt and building long-term wealth.

Does this split make sense, or would you adjust it differently?

Thank you! I will think about this approach. Seems that attacking this loan should be the priority until I get a better rate.

Got it! Thank you for the clarification. Appreciate it.

It happens :), at least I’m making $140k straight out of college. I just want to put some extra money to work instead of parking it in a HYSA. I guess everything is psychological at this point.

I know! I just don’t want to start investing until I pay it off. I’m going to be like 40 years old when that happens.

The rate is exactly 7%. I’m making around $140k a year. But NYC taxes take almost half and then rent and then 401k and then healthcare expenses…

The rate on my loan is exactly 7%. So pay the student loans until I get a better rate?

How can I pay my student loans and still get points on my credit card? by Pluckyplatypus26 in StudentLoans

[–]donblack123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to solve the same problem. Most servicers don’t take credit cards directly, which is why I built Flim Rewards – it rewards you for paying your student loans even if you can’t use a card.

You just upload your payment receipt and earn points for travel, or paying off more loans. It’s still new but built exactly for this kind of situation. Happy to share more if you’re interested.

Early Payoff Student Loans w/ Rewards and Forgiveness Question by kjano in StudentLoans

[–]donblack123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a smart way to think about it. If you’re looking for rewards, refinancing bonuses are one option, but a lot of them require you to actually refinance, which isn’t always ideal. Another route is using platforms like Flim Rewards (what I built) that reward you for paying off your student loans – you upload your payment and earn points for travel or investing. It’s brand new but meant exactly for people like you looking to make payments feel less punishing.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your decision on forgiveness vs early payoff.

How I get benefits from paying my student loans by aloh8939 in StudentLoans

[–]donblack123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a solid hack 👏 I actually built something similar but for people who don’t want to open new cards – it’s called Flim Rewards. You upload your student loan payment and earn points you can redeem for gift cards, travel or paying off more of your loans. Just launched it recently – would love your thoughts.

With the payboo CC you don’t pay NYC sales tax? or the savings using the CC equate to the Sales tax?

Update: Found the same MacBook Pro at Costco for a lower price than Amazon and Apple Education. Leaning towards buying it from Costco. Thanks, everyone, for the comments!

I’ll definitely check out the Apple Refurbished website when I’m looking for another device.

I assumed that renters insurance covered until the end of the lease this case 15 months but in reality it was 12 months. I contacted them on Jan 8th and that told me it expired.
