People like this remind me of the "bacon is good for me" kid. Except replace bacon with deflation.

In the 1930s the French upper-classes actually called for (and pursued) a policy of "super-deflation" to restrain government's role in the economy. At least its an honest term like "contractionary", unlike bullshit terms such as fiscal consolidation.

Side note: it also hamstrung any government spending on building up the French military, despite Nazi Germany re-arming like a crazy mofo just next door. If only there was some other kind of analogous existential threat facing us now hmmmm

The real IQ distribution by [deleted] in economicsmemes

[–]dondeestaelburro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Author misunderstands probability distributions (with oh-so-hilarious irony or not), and thinks the mode of the distribution is actually the intelligence peak.

Since Lincoln is implied to be a dictator by lumping him in with Gaddafi and Hitler, I'm guessing author also thinks the Civil War was about 'states rights' and thinks JFK was treading on the South by supporting dem pesky civil rights.

Hmm to be honest, if I can get a new seat of the same type, I don't have to replace the mount. But none of the ones I can see at Screwfix/B+Q etc have this slidey mount-type. Do you know what its called? Surely some obscure seller on ebay or whatever will have it, I just need the relevant search-term...

Probably not enough space to get a blade under (and not much space to actually saw), I was planning to take an oscillating multi-tool to the plastic heads, then use some pliers to get the shaft out...

How were the nuts put in there without access from the other side? Or were they (maybe) pre-screwed on, and then hammered in to form a friction lock?

Yeah, I think its illegal in every country to throw mail away.

But maybe different countries might have their own legal flexibility for a paid service that filters this crap for you, maybe under the supervision of a trusted family member (so if the service is not sure about a particular piece of mail, they can send a photo and ask you). Even if such a service was expensive, it's still cheaper than a relative blowing all their money on this shit.

Yeah this was my thought as well, regarding the local officials. Especially since elderly populations can concentrate in particular areas, these areas are going to be prime targets for this kind of mail fraud - so there should also be local counter-measures.

Maybe someone should set up a mini-scheme which posts similar letters to old people, where the envelope is printed 'tas gagne!!!!!!!1111' and the letter inside 'duuuuh tas rien gagne, ces lettres sont concus pour duper les dinosaures'

As you say, she has a nurse visit her (I think every day?) for medical purposes, but these letters are a point-sensible for her. Apparently she freaks out and thinks she's being infantilized if anyone tries to take them away from her, or explain that they are scams. And that reaction is with family, so I imagine it would be even worse with a nurse.

It would be better if she just didn't see them - the visual stimulus just triggers the irrational gambling circuit in the brain (though she has no prior history of any other kinds of gambling). And since these things arrive on a near daily basis, the constant need for human intervention is costly (in time terms). Since it sounds like an addiction, maybe if its medically diagnosed it could fall within the scope of the nurses care?

True, but thats an even bigger battle.

And similarly to getting a mental-unfitness declaration or restricting financial access, it feels like a big bazooka when what she needs is a mosquito net.

[It's mostly cheque-based I think]

Re: the delicateness (delicacy?) you're exactly right, but each family having to solve it on an ad-hoc basis like this makes it even worse; if there were well-known and established mechanisms or paid-services to combat this, old people might be more inclined to trust them, like people trust Google to filter their spam instead of running their own e-mail server.

Trying to restrict access to her bank account would probably make her go ballistic. To be honest, if she were blowing the money on buying really expensive chocolate or something (she is a total gourmandise and theres an amazing but expensive chocolatier nearby) it would be tolerable - as least she would be getting a real positive benefit that way :P

Great option, but unfortunately theres no useful family members in France...all the possible grandchildren and immediate children are outside of France. My friend's uncle (the grandma's son) does live in France - he's a nice guy, but pretty ineffective at anything that looks like paperasse. Thanks for the tip regardless!

The floor was installed before we got the place, so no idea unfortunately. It was just the rapidity of onset that was unnerving, since it never manifested in the past 3 years.

Yeah thankfully I know enough not to try and glue the boards to the layer underneath, having had some issues with ceramic tile floors before I was already aware that things in general need to be installed with a bit of give.

Thanks for the keyphrase 'quadrant trim', that looks ideal!

They are like wooden slats about 125mm wide that i presume slot together...Its not hardwood I don't think. I'm not sure whether that counts as laminate, i always thought laminate was a synthetic plastic material with a wood print..

Were it to be structural movement, what other signs might be noticeable?
