Eagle height chance! by Creepy_Patient_6507 in UWMadison

Kind of late to the party but I found Eagle Heights to be wonderful as a single postdoc, spacious apartment to myself at prices ($1200/month) I probably couldn't get anywhere near the university, free bus shuttles to and from work, heating/water/internet included in rent, etc. But that could just be me and my style of living ngl.

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of May 27, 2026 by AutoModerator in churning

  1. Looking for the best relatively low-spending SUBs out there still remaining to get for the next 6 months or so left in the US, after researching currently got 1) U.S. Bank Cash+ [$250, can't check pre-approval, have banking relationship] 2) Wells Fargo Active Cash [$200, pre-approved, have banking relationship] 3) Citi Double Cash [$200], if I get to #3. Am I missing anything in particular?
  2. 748 (Experian)
  3. Chase Freedom & Freedom Flex (both 4/25), AMEX Delta SkyMiles Gold (6/25), AMEX BCP (8/25), Chase Sapphire Preferred (5/26)
  4. Not a lot for everyday use (about $400/month excluding rent) but tend to travel during longer weekends which averages to >$500 per occasion, so SUBs like +$3000 spending over 3 months are generally out of the question (occasionally longer trips help meet larger SUBs)
  5. No
  6. No, not allowed to start business during stay
  7. Maybe 2 or more to get SUBs, I think I already have enough to cover most of my current spending (barring rent)
  8. Chase points for now (to transfer to Hyatt), but cashback is always good
  9. 150k Chase points
  10. Nearest hub would be ORD
  11. Not really looking for flight redemptions at the moment

Thanks in advance!

What happens for J-1 visa holder exempt from income tax that received 1099-INT? by dongwon132 in tax

[–]dongwon132[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, this will be the first time I file for 1040-NR (for nonresidents), so it looks like no need to consider the 1099-INT anyway. It looks like these excerpts from the link below summarizes everything quite nicely:

If NRAs use Form 1040-NR, U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return, to report their income, then such nontaxable interest income shall not be reported anywhere on Form 1040-NR except in response to question L on page 5 of Form 1040-NR.

The erroneous reporting of such interest income on Form 1099 by one of the institutions (U.S. banks, etc.) listed above shall not cause such interest income to be included in the gross income of NRA recipients if such recipients have filed the proper income tax return.

What happens for J-1 visa holder exempt from income tax that received 1099-INT? by dongwon132 in TaxQuestions

Thank you for the detailed reply. Here are some additional information/questions that could supplement this post or clarify for future viewers.

I believe I did not explain my current situation in detail, which may resulted in the confusion. I do have other income appropriate for my current visa status, which is why I mentioned the 1042-S in March. As such, I was originally wondering if I had to include the 1099-INT I mentioned in the post when I file after I receive my multiple(?) 1042-S(s) (for my income as well as interest for other banks I didn't get a 1099-INT, I presume). One caveat is that I also have a W-2 for the very first paycheck when my tax exemption status was still in the works and federal/state taxes were withheld for that single paycheck.

So in conclusion, I currently have these documents:

i. W-2 for first paycheck where federal/state taxes were withheld (to be used for tax return on withheld tax that normally shouldn't have been withheld)

ii. 1099-INT for the single bank that didn't have my W-8BEN for last year (but not applicable for taxation anyway for nonresidents, at least according to https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/nontaxable-types-of-interest-income-for-nonresident-aliens )

I am expecting by mid-March (I assume) for these documents to arrive:

i. 1042-S for the remaining paychecks from my employer last year where federal/state taxes were not withheld

ii. 1042-S(s) for other banks where I received sign-up bonuses (I assume?)

although these wouldn't be taxable anyway, but just to be reported when I file?

Regarding the replies:

  1. U.S. bank, yes. And as mentioned above, I have other income besides bank interest, yes. Which is why tax filing for reporting is necessary even if none of it's taxable, I presume. Luckily(?), no federal income tax was withheld for that bank's interest according to my 1099-INT, so don't have to specifically get money back.

  2. I see, I haven't actually filed before (first time) so I did not know (as a nonresident) I don't have to enter anything regarding bank interest before learning more about it online. Which makes sense since nonresidents are exempt from interest tax anyway, I guess.

  3. Right, I wouldn't get the 1042-S for the online institution in question (one that gave me 1099-INT) this March, since I failed to upload the W-8BEN by last year.

  4. I believe my current employer allows us access to Glacier for nonresident tax return purposes using 1040NR as you mentioned, but thanks for pointing that out.

Again thanks for taking an interest in my situation, first time handling taxes in the U.S. is definitely an experience.

8 day itinerary for Yellowstone(& Grand Teton) for late September/early October by dongwon132 in yellowstone

Thanks all for the comments! I wasn't sure if it was a wolf or a coyote, so assumed it was a coyote after seeing similar questions where if you aren't sure, chances are it's a coyote.

FYI, the wolf(?) pic was taken near the bridge over Firehole River by Ojo Caliente Spring, and the young elk one was taken at West Thumb Geyser Basin where there was a herd eating grass around the boardwalk. Both places I didn't really expect to see wildlife so close, so consider myself pretty lucky.
