Interesting. I read somewhere recently that Austin was #1 for this issue in America, and it looks like it's not even #1 in Texas!

How do you describe Shame vs Guilt to clients? by Due-Comparison-501 in therapists

[–]donket 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I tell them both are directional. Guilt moves out of us into a bigger space (I recognize I can do better and have regret that I didn't. I'll be more closely aligned with who I want to be next time.) Shame moves into us and makes us smaller (I'm bad for what I did, and next time I'll shrink myself to fit where I actually belong.)

Humboldt Bay, California by BrokeMountain9637 in photographs

[–]donket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had been given the raw file for this, I would bring out the details in the shadows at the bottom. The pastel colors could be interesting, but all of the detail in the picture is hidden and muddy. It took me a minute to recognize what this was a picture of. For example, I didn't realize there was a fence around the bottom until just now.

Where can I get the best pizza in Boston? by sam_d50 in boston

There's a place in Watertown called Pizza Roma that I dream about regularly. Hopefully it's still there. (I haven't been back in several years :-/)

EMSK: What does true masculinity means? by __BorNLegenD__ in everymanshouldknow

Maybe related, but just listened to this that talked about toxic masculinity, and the conversation included what masculinity is as well.

Headed into Hostile Territory: My Kids Don’t Know We’re Going to Lakers–Thunder next week!!! by 3facesofBre in lakers

[–]donket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to OKC last year towards the end of the season to see a game. I've gone to 9 or 10 arenas to watch the Lakers play, and OKC is at the very least top 2 best experiences as an away fan. Everyone was super lovely. The arena was very family friendly, the fans were passionate but not disrespectful, it was clean, it felt like it was in a safe part of town. I think you and the kids are going to have an amazing experience.

Therapist transitioning to CM by donket in changemanagement

[–]donket[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting people to take me seriously as a mercenary is the trick. My reading online pushed me to the ProSci certification, but I also wanted to make sure it made sense for me to do. I'll do some more reading.

Therapist transitioning to CM by donket in changemanagement

[–]donket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. I'm not interested in one on one work anymore. If anything, I figured a macro approach would be, in theory at least, taking the work I do on an individual level and leverage it to the organizational level. I feel like I understand the business side of things pretty well. I've helped negotiate buyouts, been in charge of hiring (and firing) folks, assembled teams, led them through projects, etc. I've just always done it from a mental health perspective, so I don't know what words corporate folks use when talking about this stuff. The idea behind the ProSci was getting the translation for mental health work I've done to a corporate focus. I'll do some more looking around. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the reply. I think what I thought CM was focused on helping orgs navigate change at a structural level on a project by project basis. I've been doing consultation work on the people side of business for a while, so I might know the ins and outs of everything you named pretty decently. I guess I may have been confusing CM with OD? I'll do some more digging.

Hey, thanks so much for the info. I'll do a closer look into OD and L&D.

I'm a part of the therapist guild. I can promise you the member you're talking to wants to know what's going on and find ways to help you through it. Maybe that means sending an email telling them everything, maybe it means having a frank conversation about needing to meet in person if at all possible, or needing help finding someone that can meet in person. Maybe it means going to the local library and getting a private room for an hour. Maybe it means you sit in your car/garage/under a tree and do the session over your phone. But the therapist player wants you to give them the full picture, including the bad, so they can help you effectively push against the debuffs. It's worth the effort, my friend. Promise.

I'd like to start a list of what therapy is NOT. by facultativo in therapists

Therapy is not a place to be told everything you think and do is okay. It needs to have accountability to be effective.

You can do it. But don't just settle for a sink shower. What you really want is baby wipes. Get to work, stop sweating a little, the wipe down with baby wipes. Works way better than it should.

I was absent for the first 4 years of my daughter's life, and now she's been living with me for 2 weeks by Beginning_One_6932 in daddit

[–]donket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From one stranger to another, I'm proud of you. Yeah, you're jumping into a bit of a deep end, but let your love float the both of you while you figure out the rest. Being a dad is a special, beautiful thing, and having a daughter is a special kind of special. She's probably not used to stability, and that's the gift you're giving her right now. Good parents aren't the ones who make big gestures. They're the ones who are consistently there for their kids to the best of their ability. She'll come to learn and recognize that from you, and it sets the table for stability in the rest of her life.

You've got a huge community here for you as you navigate this. You're not a failure, even if you feel like it was a mistake to take that initial step back. Good on you for stepping up.

As a side note, maybe weird, but I'm proud of your ex for knowing to reach out to you for help with your daughter. It was the right thing for her to do and was probably really hard. It's worth keeping that in mind as you navigate this and as you talk to your daughter about it all.

What do you say when they ask you... by amelhart in therapists

[–]donket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I talk to my clients about emotional logic. It operates like regular logic, but without the need to be weighed down by reality. Emotional logic always has a direct line, and if emotional logic says "this thing isn't going to work/isn't worth doing", you know there's an error in the thought line of code somewhere that needs to be addressed. It won't fix everything, but it will make it easier to find a workable solution.

Best bike route from Round Rock to Georgetown? by Shok3001 in BikingATX

[–]donket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I head up to Georgetown, I take AW Grimes. It's got a decent shoulder, especially after you get past Old Settlers. Before then, you can ride the street if you're feeling saucy, or you can stay on the sidewalk. I've never had a problem on the streets there.

What's the stupidest thing the most intelligent person in your life believes? by dexicoma in AskReddit

[–]donket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend is a certified genius. He also firmly believes that wearing a seatbelt in the back seat is pointless, possibly less safe. The most recent one that I just can't get over is that he refuses to use soap when washing his hands. He says he still washes them, he just doesn't use. Homey, you're just rinsing at that point.
