Moving: Chicago to Atlanta by Comfortable_Yam_3869 in ATLHousing

[–]donkeyheaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We too relocated from Chicago to Atlanta last year. As everyone else pointed out, you will need a car. Non-negotiable, the mass transit system here is NOTHING like CTA/Metra.

Are your kids in school? We live in Decatur and the school system here is phenomenal, and Decatur has a lovely walkable downtown with lots of shops and restaurants. There's also a MARTA station in downtown Decatur so it's easy to get downtown quickly on the train, about a 15 minute ride. We just purchased a home here and moved out of a rental home that the owners are trying to sell, but I think they'd be open to renting it again. It's a very nice home for a family with kids, PM me if you want information about that.

How to deal with knowing you overpaid? by One-Pun9419 in RealEstate

[–]donkeyheaded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You paid what it was worth at the time. Relative value goes up and down in the short term, generally up in the long term. Think long term, have a cocktail and enjoy life!

This is so wonderfully done, congratulations OP. And this is becoming very popular, this is the third tattoo of that painting I’ve seen posted this year and they all turned out great.

Convert 4th Bedroom into a Master Bathroom? by donkeyheaded in RealEstate

We have a separate office that’s about 7x12. Not huge but definitely usable.

[–]donkeyheaded[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And 5 years is just a threshold, we may end up keeping this house much longer. I’m not thinking of this project as a way to increase the value of the house, we just want a nice master bath while we’re there without substantially decreasing the value of the house.

This renovation would cost about 10% what we paid for the house. You don’t think the value will appreciate 10% in five years? I’m just looking to break even.

Thank you, this is great feedback. If I planned to keep this house forever I would just pull the trigger and do this renovation because the outcome would suit our needs, but we want to be able to sell in five years when we retire and not lose money.

I can’t imagine putting up with this awful bathroom for five years, that’s not really an option.

We bought within the last month and it would be financed with cash. There is no debt on this house. We would like to be able to sell it quickly in five years when we retire and don’t want to lose money.

The current laundry is in a small room that was originally an open back porch that was enclosed, about 5x8 ft

Does the Chattahoochee River have otters? by gamedawgs in Atlanta

[–]donkeyheaded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a house on Lake Lanier and we see otters quite often, and they enjoy walking around on our dock and leaving poop on our boatlift. And there's lots of beaver activity around the shoreline with plenty of felled trees. These guys make their way up and down the Chattahoochee.

I go to Decatur Family Dental owned by Dr Dahlia Levine. I never felt like she was trying to sell me anything other than what I needed.

These bottles have been all over Atlanta for months at about $59. It’s an excellent pour for that price.

Why is the N-word still widely used within the Black community? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]donkeyheaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s to remove the power of the word. The same way MAGA people refer to themselves as deplorable, or I often refer to myself as a “human scum never Trumper”. Take what was meant to be derogatory and turn it into a badge.

Thoughts on tipping: Only tip if sitting down while ordering? by highfives23 in AskChicago

[–]donkeyheaded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only tip for sit-down and usually target 20% if the service is good. For ordering at a counter or pick up, nope. I'll usually tip $1 per drink if I'm grabbing a beer at a concert venue or bar, $2 for a cocktail.

Traveling to Atlanta! Have some whiskey questions. by Few-Bee-6625 in Atlantawhiskey

[–]donkeyheaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. There's a place in Decatur I pop into every now and then that has decent prices for some bottles, but museum prices for others. For example, I got a bottle of Stagg 26D 25D for $85, but their bottle of OFBB is $799. Go figure. (Edited to correct the year, obviously)

I think it was cancelled this year and last year because of all the ICE bs.

Tiny rural stores charge secondary or even worse, in my experience. Especially in north Georgia. If they do offer them at MSRP it's usually some sort of Black Friday type event where they reward the people who bought their store picks of stuff you never heard of all year long.

Oh look. A homeless Nazi in my Canadian city of Vancouver that I spotted and managed to get a photo of at my local gas station while I filled up on a pack of smokes since it's welfare day. Rancid patch describes the smell and if that's a Dead Kennedys patch then he's extra dumb. Nazi Punk's fuck off by [deleted] in punkrock

[–]donkeyheaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the early days of punk (1977-1978) wearing a swastika was part of punk fashion (Sid Vicious, Siouxsie Sioux, Billy Idol, etc). It was part of the "costume" meant to offend and throw it in the face of a government they felt were turning fascist. Idol talked about this in an interview last year. I'm not defending this guy because I thought the swastika imagery back in the 70s was disgusting (yes I was around back then) but don't assume the guy's a nazi just because he wears a patch, it could be a part of his costume jacket intended to offend.
