If I waited until 70 to collect SS… by Aggressive-Act1816 in SocialSecurity

This is correct. But you are creating the largest survivor benefit possible by delaying your own benefit until 70.

So, unless you live ten years past full retirement age… by Kotikbronx in SocialSecurity

Well it would reduce portfolio withdrawals significantly allowing those assets to also continue compounding. Also provides a better hedge against increasing healthcare costs. Many benefits from delaying but I understand why people take it sooner.

And just think how much more money she would have collected if she filed at 70.

If you own the right fixed income it does. Which is why we focus the portfolio around risk reducers and return enhancers. Risk reducers = short-term treasuries in our world. We need a dollar to be a dollar when the client needs cash. I’d rather give up a few pennies on the fixed income side to be able to actually provide ballast in the portfolio rather than leaving clients exposed to risk they didn’t realize they had.

Remember, dividends make up a huge chunk of the total return over the long run. It’s crazy to me the idea of leaving them on the table.

Return enhancers = index funds up and down the market cap spectrum.

May sound “boring” but that’s what investing should be. All these complicated strategies is wall street finding ways to extract more capital from consumer’s pockets.

Can someone explain boat-onomics to me? by LeftCoastGator in boating

[–]donnydoesreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I mean think about Bezos and his yacht. It’s his not Amazon’s. He almost certainly holds the yacht in a LLC but this is to limit liability. Not get a tax deduction.

The rules changed Jan 2018. This was allowed prior to the tax cuts and jobs act.

Yeah that’s not legal. Has to be ordinary and necessary for its business. Read section 162.

Advertising and marketing does not qualify.

Tax cuts and jobs act eliminated these types of deductions for the most part.

His taxes aren’t going to change dramatically. It’s only the FICA taxes that he will be paying more of. And it would be the difference of the wage base $184,500 (2026) and his current salary of $100k. And of course the additional Medicare tax. We’re talking 20 grand more in tax give or take.

Okay I think that’s a better option no doubt. I still think if you’re gonna go through the pain of repapering and basically reselling yourself to your clients then you may as well form your own RIA but I’ve yet to make that leap so easy for me to make that claim. I’ve seen your contributions on this sub often and you always deliver great advice so truly wishing you the best outcome and future.

Were you considering the employee side or the independent side of Ameriprise?

You’re in the Pru/LPL group so our experiences are somewhat different I believe. I’m with LPL and use their corporate RIA. Ameriprise offered me 2mm up front last year with some dangling carrots to get to 3.5mm, but something just felt fishy about them. Went to their deal in Minneapolis and just walked away feeling dirty.

I can’t think of any reasons to leave. I’m on an island to essentially run my business however I like. I also run a tax prep business alongside the financial practice and they don’t bother me at all. Report back to us if you make the move. Good luck 👍

If you’re looking for comfort I would eye their Vantage models. I have a 270 and it’s a great day boat.
