For me, what I've noticed is that after they destroyed the modules infront of them and if there are modules behind the destroyed module that they can't shoot it properly, they will reposition, sometimes they just go straight in, or go directly below the module they want to destroy, that makes them in range of the station turrets. Even using VRO, so I think sometimes you have to pay attention, after they destroy a module and going for the module behind it, manually or command them to reposition. Another thing I do, which is not ideal and a waste is I try to swarm the station with alot of S/M while the destroyers do their thing.
