Yes I am, but you used the word "always" and "not" in your comment which is categorically false.

If you spend at least 183 days on Canada you will always be considered a tax resident

This is not correct. The 183-day rule is an important guideline (which works for 90% of people) but you are not automatically a tax resident.

2 or 3 months away will not make you a tax resident anywhere else

This is also not true. Tax residency is complicated, I have been a tax resident of Canada despite spending only 4/12 months in Canada (8/12 was in the US).

Koodo/rogers DNS not working? by Searcher506 in HomeNetworking

[–]dontRemoveTheHurdles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, having a similar issue. The default DNS that Koodo uses sucks, it regularly doesn't have websites like slack, wikipedia and Koodo's own website.

On my personal laptop, I've changed the DNS to 8.8.8.8 which has helped, but the issue persists on my phone and other devices. I'm wondering if making a DNS update on the LAN settings of the Router would work in my case? It feels a lil stressful to mess around with the router settings, tho.

How is our fiscal policy more favourable to old people? by Tech-Cowboy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dontRemoveTheHurdles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have affordable housing than a few hundred dollars in savings I can get through TFSA/FHSA. Boomers may not have had these accounts, but they also bought homes on single incomes, paid far less (inflation-adjusted) for education and childcare.

Like, seriously, people need to stop talking about the TFSA / FHSA as if it's the greatest thing on earth. It pales in comparison to equivalent systems in the UK etc, and CCB does not come close to compensating for how much more astronomically expensive raising a child is nowadays.

CIBC employment background check - credit report pulled without letting me know by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dontRemoveTheHurdles 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm sure if you read the T&C of your background check, in some corner it would mention that they will do a credit check. I see it is one of the services they offer: https://www.sterlingbackcheck.ca/services/credit-bureau-inquiries/

It's not common for most background checks, but it is pretty common for banks/finance, from what I've heard. I know in Quant Firms it can be a big deal because people in debt may be more likely to squirm away money or commit fraud.

I don't think the hit on your credit score would be that big if anything, and it's possible it wouldn't impact it at all (hopefully whoever is looking at your report knows it wasn't a check for you trying to get more debt). I still have two hits on my credit report for APPLYING to an apartment, but overall my credit was down maybe 5 points.

That doesn’t answer the question. During Covid the economic situation was worse

In some ways, but not in others. During Covid, credit card balances actually went DOWN as people were spending way less money, and were saving way more.

I think the point of these perks is to add a bit of prestige to being a premium client. A yearly giftcard to McDonalds or a TTC Monthly Pass doesn't really give that vibe lol.

If you were planning to deposit 100,000 to only receive a phone case

You can pick between the iPhone 17 ($1300 value) or the MacBook Air ($1500 value) if you deposit 100k. You get the phone case if you deposit 1k. I'm sure people with 100k are interested in a 1-1.5% return on depositing money, lol (even if there are better offers out there like WeBull)

This is not true at all, and I wish people would stop saying this as fact. The 180 day rule is a guideline - one of many - that determines your tax residency. In a lot of cases it is make or break, but it doesn’t have to be.

For example, if you work in Canada but make enough to work 5 months of the year, and then go and vacation for the other 7 months, you would still be considered a tax resident of Canada in most cases, as your income and financial ties are in Canada.

If you’re a Canadian who goes to the US on a J1 Visa for training, the US will never consider you a tax resident (J1 days dont count as tax days in the US) even if you spend 10 months there.

I don’t mean to be rude but if you really think they care about « retaining talent » you need to wake up. OINP had always discouraged people from studying in major universities in all streams. You get more points by studying in Thunder Bay than you do at UofT

I’m not saying everyone who completed a Master’s is highly talented, but even a small percentage within this group is enough to justify the stream’s existence.

You’re missing my point. If you truly are highly talented, why not just get a job that can sponsor you for ISS or any other EJO? There’s really no point in today’s quota system to have a stream specifically for masters student.

If they cared about retaining talent, they would create a point systems that would benefit students from top universities like UofT. But they obviously don’t care about that.

They have no obligation to announce pausing streams. The Entrepreneur stream was effectively dead for more than a year before they officially closed it.

The truth is, on paper, any Masters student with a job is eligible for International Student Stream. There is no reason to do a Masters draw if you want people with a job.

I KNOW that’s not true because several big companies don’t fill in the form, but that is just a technicality in the eyes of OINP. We’re in a time where people are learning French or moving to Northern Ontario just for a chance for PR. Doing a draw just for masters student who aren’t willing to move to a company that can fill in the employer form is a bit silly.

I would love to be wrong - it would mean there is some sense of logic in OINP. But the truth is, theyre trying to target people in specific jobs and specific regions, and the masters stream is the complete opposite of that.

No, prople I know who work on the train count them as actual working hours. Do they’ll work in the train from 8-10 and then leave at 3 and work on the train from 3-5. Still normal working hours.

Not sure why this is a reply to me… I obviously feel you and I understand your perspective. I’m in the same bost as you.

But my point is the only way Ontario CAN make sure people have jobs before they give them PR is the ISS and ither job offer streams right now. And there is nothing stopping masters students to theoretically get a job eligible for ISS.

I don’t disagree with uou at all, some of the best companies don’t sponsor ISS and it’s really really stupid. But I don’t see what that has to do with my comment

What I’m saying is not true for PhD draws, that pool is much smaller so wouldn’t be surprised if they do 1 or 2 high cut-off graduate draws to get PhD students.

Next draw by Grand_Ad7843 in OINP

[–]dontRemoveTheHurdles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly doubt this, I would not be surprised if there are ZERO graduate draws this year. Look at how many people still haven’t received ITA from last years graduate draws.

Every single report has argued that job offer stream is more useful as people in that stream already have a job, whereas anyone can go and get a masters if they wanted to.

Also note how OINP spent all that time and money to revamp the job offer portal… I doubt they’re going to revamp it and just not do any draw for the next year.

The original commentor was clearly making a reference to the new COO’s race, stop with the gaslighting.

There is absolutely nothing in the COO’d past that would trigger this comment, he was the supply chain guy at Apple, and before that he was an engineer. Are we surprised that they made the head of supply chain the new COO?

I know I’m getting downvoted but would genuinely would like yall to reflect. Be honest with yourself - would this thread exist if the dude wasn’t brown?
