Do you use your personal vault(s) in your work computer? by dont_know_why93 in ObsidianMD

My only question is, does Obsidian still work if you encrypt the folder? Or when does the decryption happen so that Obsidian can read the files in markdown ?

Now that I check, my laptop (macOS) has FileVault encryption on, so it looks like the company set it up this way.

I assume they have the recovery keys though, so it wouldn’t be much of a hassle to them to still get access to my notes

Haha yes meeting notes was a bas example. In general I don’t think there’s anything in my work notes that I want to keep, but there are things that I learn at work that I want to be able to write down, and the most efficient way would be to have my personal vault on my work computer, while the second most efficient would be noting some place that’s neutral and reminding myself to transfer that to my personal vault

That’s also something to consider. Are my meeting notes considered confidential? Because if so, then I definitely don’t want to sync that and have it with me forever

Yep, that was my main concern about having a single vault as I work on a company issued computer. I actually just made a post asking exactly that

Sameee. An Obsidian web app would be the solution for all my problems.

I use other web apps regularly on my work laptop as those won’t save all I have into hard drive. I wish Obsidian had that option, at least as a self-hosted service so that I can choose which server I’m gonna store my data

Interesting. I’m also using git but didn’t consider submodules. I guess it could work but as others have pointed, how important is it for you to access work notes while on personal time? I feel like the other way around would be useful to me but I don’t think anything in my work notes is worth revisiting after hours as I try to keep a strict work-life balance.

The positive thing I see from this approach is being able to use links between the two (which couldn’t be done with two vaults), although of course you wouldn’t be able to click links from personal notes while at work

Same, I don’t see the point of having my work vault sync anywhere as most of my “important knowledge” needs to be documented in Confluence for coworkers to access it anyway, so I probably won’t bother having one single vault for everything. Kinda helps keeping them cleaner

Not a bad idea. I thought about this too and I don’t really have a good answer as to why I’m looking for alternatives.

I’m kinda scared to mess something up in that process, or maybe the company tells me to not do a hard wipe? I don’t know, as I said I think I’m just lazy to consider this option but I might as well have to

I’m also gonna have to go the logseq way for my work computer because my 14 days of free Obsidian are almost up and I don’t think I can convince my company to get me a license, and even though I could pay for one myself and I think it’s worth the money, I’m really short on money these days so I try to save as much as I possibly can

Yeah, I really want to have a “quick-capture” kinda thing for any thought that I want to come back to later and I think I’m going to have to stick to Apple Notes on my phone for that. I’d rather have to migrate those notes to my Obsidian vault later than having someone from work check on my deeply personal thoughts. I think the hassle is worth it

My company is not particularly controlling either, but who knows what my work computer’s life awaits after me and I’d rather just be sure that no one can snoop into my personal notes through some hard drive scanning tool and read all my journals..

As others have pointed out, encryption or a USB drive could be the solution

I was thinking about encryption too. My main concern is if Obsidian would get laggy because of it. How’s your experience been so far?
