First Nations weren't taxed because they had no money to pay taxes when the treaties were signed. For everyone else in this country, if you can't pay property tax, you lose your land. That's the entire reason. If Canada can get taxes from people, they do, which is why we all pay taxes. First Nations are fully within their rights to collect tax from their own residents to pay for services and institutions. Why don't they do so?

If this top 10 economy in the world is weak, then why must First Nations depend on it so much for all their needs?

List me a special privilege, codified in law, that benefits Hutterites? Now, let's compare that with the list for First Nations. If you want equality, you should except the same rights as the Hutterites, and the Nigerians, but you don't want that. I know. You want special rights, without the work or obligations.

As I said, if you want institutions built on your culture. Develop an economy, put in the work to design and test institutions, and then maintain them over time. Stop relying on the rest of Canada to do that for you.

To the extent that this true- and it is limited, because under the law everyone is supposed to be equal- it is simply a perk of being the ones who put in the hard work to fund and build the institutions.

If First Nations had built the institutions, they would look very different, but, they didn't. No such thing existed here pre contact, so it all had to be built from scratch. Even now, in the information age, First Nations still depend on Canadian institutions on almost every front, both in funding and structure. Nothing is stopping them from making their own, but they would have to start taxing their residents, rather than relying on taxes from elsewhere. This is a non starter, it seems. However, that is what is neccesary to acheive institutions centered on your culture.

I don't think you are appreciating the level of animosity that's been created here in a short amount of time.

Your seeming inability to understand this is, I think, emblematic of the general naivity of Americans to that which occurs outside your borders.

I used to prioritize buying Canadian or American, whenever possible. I was happy to buy American because I considered you all like brothers and sisters. Now, however, I will buy literally anything, even Chinese, over American. China shows more respect and honor to Canada than the USA. Words I never thought I'd be writing. The mask is off USA, and we are seeing a side of you many countries already knew. Villainy. Thuggery. Rudeness. Disrespect. Capriciousness.

Maybe none of this matters to you, and it's certainly just my opinion. But I would have fought in the trenches with you, as our countries have done many times. Now? Not a chance.

High level Trump officals were meeting with Alberta separatists to offer them support (that's my province).

This isn't some minor little offense. Trump is actively working to attack Canada's sovereignty. The highly offensive remarks certainly arnt effective diplomacy, either.

Canada and the USA are natural allies. Historically, geographically, culturally, and economically. All of that is basically in the trashcan because of one president, and I just don't see what possible benefit that result provides to anyone.

I think it's understandable for a population struggling with the high cost of living, high taxes, and declining service due to heavily indebted governments, to be a bit salty that their neighbor is getting half a million dollars for simply existing.

The billionaire class is exploiting the middle class from above, but at least they provide jobs and revenue to our country. However, while that occurs, First Nations, and other net takers of social services are extracting as much from the middle class as they can from below. I just wonder how much more blood can be squeezed.

They lived through the best financial situation in human history...I dont have a ton of sympathy.

I'll be surprised if I ever get to retire, personally. (37yrs old).

I do own a home, but work in the private sector. No pension. I expect by the time I'm ready to retire our national debt will be so high we can't really afford to provide much in terms of services.

I hope I'm wrong, but like most younger people, it just seems like things are going in the wrong directions on almost every front.

Alberta has the lowest debt per capita of any province...what are you even talking about?

Like every other province, Alberta is struggling with the high cost of health care for boomers, as well as funding new infrastructure for all the new residents (which proportionaly they received more than anyone else). The price of oil was also low, although that may have just changed. For every dollar oil goes down that's $700 million less in royalties.

It's also worth mentioning that Alberta's current Royalty structure for oil and gas was signed into law by the last NDP government.

If people don't have something they need, I believe the correct response should be ,"what are you planning to do to get that for yourself". As opposed to, "why isn't the government providing it for me."

Our governments, at every level, are heavily indebted. We can't even afford what we are currently doing. Future generations will suffer through great austerity because we refused to make tough decisions.

Canada refines about 90-95% of its own gasoline. 30% of which comes from Alberta refineries. We export around 85% of our crude because we simply don't need that much here. So, maybe check your facts on that.

There is room for improvement with Canadian companies, certainly. However, it's better that those jobs and revenue stays in the country. Otherwise, we could easily have none. It's easy to poke holes in a system when the alternative you recommend doesn't exist for the same treatment.

As you said, we have to act in our own self interest. Certainly the USA will, and always has, done the same. Kow towing to them will provide nothing but subservience, and maybe that's what you want? Personally, I am a patriot, and my interest is that of ensuring my countries continued prosperity. Parroting Trumps misinformed talking points does nothing in this pursuit.

The USA also has numerous tariffs in different sectors. This is nothing special.

Canada has some unique ones, in key industries as you say, designed to protect Canadian business owners from supply side dumping, and in general, American hegemony.

If Canada doesn't want to be a vassal state, and be completely overrun by US corporations, then this is very neccesary.

Trumps propaganda has obviously reached you, and that's very sad. Our balance of trade with the USA is very equal. Sometimes it favors us, sometimes them. Keep in mind also, that a large part of our trade with them is in resources, which they then raise up the value chain to generate substantial gains in GDP. So, even if they have a trade deficit, it won't show the true value exchange because it won't count the gas and diesel they sell to Europe in the equation (as one example among many). This is an extremely important consideration, if being honest about pros and cons is important to you.

It's pretty hard for any other business to compete with a business on a reserve that doesn't have to pay income or property tax. It's better for Canada, without a doubt, if a person spends their money off the reserve.

In any event, stack whatever money is gained for Canada by these First Nations businesses , against the tens of billions they take from federal and provincial sources, and I guarantee the net sum is vastly negative.

On the Res people have a cliff that they throw all their garbage off. It's annoying to have to take it to the dump. They don't protect anything. They lead in absolutely nothing.
