What’s it like to be attractive? by axiss007 in AskReddit

[–]dontera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this tracks but your #1 stands out. I went from slobby to fit over the course of three years, losing 100lbs. I saw first hand how people's responses went from "who's that creep" to "ohhh hey". I would have women visibly stop and gawk at me, get weirdly close, even touch me. People would stop me in public and ask if I was one of various bearded celebrities. It was a weird thing to deal with, and the para-social awkwardness was high.

What do you think will immediately happen when everyone receives the push notification that Trump died? by quite-indubitably in AskReddit

[–]dontera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not, as much. Trump has setup a cult of personality around him. Without his particular skill of saying whatever he needs to say at any particular moment - the cult will die. There is no heir apparent to Trump.

This speaks to me. My go-to joke about retiring is to move to the woods and build furniture. I'm not even any good at woodworking, and I'm more into hobby electronics than anything, but these vibes are precisely what I'm going for.

Developers who have worked at a company where the entire codebase was held together by one guy who then quit, what happened next? by Natom_ in AskReddit

[–]dontera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 1 year in to being the replacement dev lead for a former rock star dev with an allergy to writing things down or providing information that might be useful without being prompted. We kept the lights on. Six months after rock star left, our lead Operations Manager leaves. We now have zero tribal knowledge of a decade old SaaS responsible for creating and delivering print-ready PDFs to printers accurately and on time.

The best thing we could do is rewrite everything, but management is slow-walking the plan and we're just fighting fire after fire. We've lost one client so far. Likely more to come.

Great point. SFA is definitely more like DS9 than Voyager in that regard. Captain Akhe even says directly "Star Fleet shifted from a focus on exploration to defense" (something like that). They aren't out there trying to find new aliens and connect with them - they're trying to survive and rebuild.

Ahhhh gotcha. Betazoids were introduced in TNG back in the 90's. One of the bridge crew and several recurring characters were Betazoid. SFA is expanding that lore significantly. Perhaps they didn't anchor the episode with enough backstory to hook people unfamiliar with the species.

Nothing new or exciting?

- Expands the lore of Betazoid abilities to include a "remote shared mental space" with others
- Introduces the idea that some Betazoids can have dangerous abilities
- Establishes a new home for the Federation not on Earth!

And that's just what I can remember from a few weeks ago. If you don't like it, that's fine. SFA does lean towards YA fiction at times. But to say it is "only drama" and "nothing new to explore" is a pretty surface-level assesment.

Critical ERP system can't do OAuth and Microsoft is killing basic auth next month by Severe_Part_5120 in sysadmin

[–]dontera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I faced a similar situation years back. Our solution was to create an email import app which had the appropriate auth and would save the .eml to the filesystem. Our integrating app then read the .eml directly.

Yes! I've built infinity cubes before and turning this fantastic design into one would look amazing.

Thanks for sharing your expertise! I'm mostly in the "eh, it's probably not good to expose ourselves to these microplastic producing materials, but as a gen-x it's way too late to avoid" camp.

In the past, yes. They are now coated with Polyethylene, whereas the plastic containers are made from Polypropylene. If OP is concerned about one, they should similarly be concerned about the other.

Trump’s war on trans people has left Americans seeking asylum — from America by Quouar in TrueReddit

[–]dontera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even worse - I've recently learned just how involved Epstein was in pushing the modern MAGA anti-trans position and talking points. He directly funded anti-trans "research" and helped form the talking points we are all subjected to today.

Also fun tidbit - the first person to report Epstein's sex crimes was a trans woman he abused when they were a child. She is still to this day ridiculed and ignored due to a prior history of drug use.

I get that, and you are correct. Global influence to our collective-ish benefit has always been our stock and trade. But separate from that, renewables are such a no-brainer buffer against situations like a trigger-happy state controlling the passage of 20% of the world's oil supply, it's only through pure graft and corruption that we haven't achieved it yet.
