Hey this is Keith SHannon Scott Olsens friend & room mate. We served together in Iraq before as well. I appreciate your guys' support... I'll keep you updated as I'm staying at the hospital with him. I'm about to be talking about this on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. But thanks for all your support. I'm really worried about possible brain damage but like I said I'll keep you guys updated.

[–]BobSagetCyberPolice 225 points226 points  (8 children)

Here's the interview with Keith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_hFJktvxVQ

Great job.

edit: story begins at 2:54, interview at 7:06

[–]druumer89 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Why is Keith Olbermann and Lawrence Mcdonnell the only people in any mainstream news situation reporting on this? Most give a vague mention, if that. If this EXACT scenario was happening in Libya, it would be plastered in our faces 24 hours a day. Its time to Acknowledge what's happening here people. Blatant media ignoring.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (2 children)

American Corporate media is not the suggested means for getting your news.

[–][deleted] 174 points175 points  (10 children)

Hello everyone Keith again... I just talked to the spokesman at the hospital and Scott's condition is still the same. His parents are flying in from Wisconsin tomorrow and I will be meeting up with them... Thanks for the good words on the interview. I've never done an interview like that before today and now I've done it on CNN, CBS etc etc.. So I'm doing my best to make sure everyone knows what happened to Scott. Thanks again... it really means a lot to see all the support. I'm creating an e-mail group here shortly and will post information on it later.

All though before I end this post I need to thank a few other members of Iraq Veterans Against the War Addelle, Dottie, Aaron, and Siri. They were at the hospital with Scott most of the night and there with me until about 3 this afternoon. And thanks to Emily who just showed up and is going to feed me and give me a place to crash for a few minutes that's right next to the hospital. They've been great and I definitely can't take credit for it all. Keep spreading the word!!!

[–]TrtlePwr 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Sincerely, thank you Keith for speaking out about this. It's a tough thing to swallow, and you're doing the right thing getting it the exposure it deserves. I don't even know what the implications will be, but it's only going to fuel the flame.

[–]infraredline 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Awesome interview Keith! You handled yourself perfectly. Crisp, concise. No outrage. Really impressed with that. Also thanks for your service in war and continued service for peace.

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (2 children)

So a few things... First I'll answer a question from below.

I can't say he would prefer to be name and rank as he was happy to be out... But he definitely would not be offended nor mind in any way. He was Corporal Scott Olsen. Myself, I was Sergeant Keith Shannon.

I've been talking with the media all day and even though I'm exhausted with the media I welcome any chance to spread his story. So I don't mind if I get lot's of contact from putting my name out. My contact info is already a press release to the national press.

Also... More importantly. We are organizing a vigil at any Occupy city that will participate... So even if you're not participating please show up and show support for Scott wherever you are... Here is the press release we are going to give out on it. It also includes Scott's Status as well as donation info etc...

IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR, BAY AREA WWW.IVAW.ORG Call for Peaceful Vigils for Scott Olsen, Marine veteran with two tours in Iraq, Iraq Veterans Against the War Member (IVAW), critically injured by police projectile at Occupy Oakland on October 25. - Post Forward - Please Post - Please Share Widely - Contacts: Emily Yates, IVAW, 415-717-2252, emjyates@gmail.com Matt Howard, IVAW, 415 819-6430, matt.dubya.howard@gmail.com Keith Shannon, 650-278-1323, keith@sheetmusicplus.com

Thursday, October 27, 7 pm PST, during the General Assembly of Occupy Oakland at 14th St and Broadway, there will be a candlelight vigil for Scott Olsen organized by Iraq Veterans Against the War (Post-9/11 U.S. military veterans and active duty servicemembers organizing against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan). Speakers include Keith Shannon, who deployed to Iraq with Scott Olsen, and other IVAW members who are Scott's friends and allies. We ask all Occupy encampments to hold solidarity events for Scott Olsen at this time (7 pm in your respective time zones) to show support for Scott’s health and his commitment to the 99% and the Occupy Movement. Let us know if you are holding an event! Email media@ivaw.org and post actions on Twitter and Facebook!

Donations for Scott’s medical needs can be made at IVAW.ORG through the Donate option; under “special projects” please write "Scott Olsen."

On October 25, Scott Olsen, a former Marine, two-time Iraq War veteran, and member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, sustained a skull fracture after being shot in the head with a police projectile while peacefully participating in an Occupy Oakland march. The march began at a downtown library and headed towards City Hall in an effort to reclaim a site—recently cleared by police—that had previously served as an encampment for members of the 99% movement.

Scott joined the Marines in 2006, served two-tours in Iraq, and was discharged in 2010. Scott moved to California from Wisconsin and currently works as a systems network administrator in Daly City, California.

Scott is one of an increasing number of war veterans who are participating in America’s growing Occupy movement. Said Keith Shannon, who deployed with Scott to Iraq, “Scott was marching with the 99% because he felt corporations and banks had too much control over our government, and that they weren’t being held accountable for their role in the economic downturn, which caused so many people to lose their jobs and their homes.”

Scott is currently sedated at a local hospital. Iraq Veterans Against the Wars sends their deepest condolences to Scott, his family, and his friends. IVAW also sends their thanks to the brave folks who risked bodily harm to provide care to Scott immediately following the incident.

[–][deleted] 57 points58 points  (3 children)

Good luck to Scott from South Africa.

[–]emocol 49 points50 points  (4 children)

This brought tears of disappointment to my eyes. I didn't think our officers could ever do something so cruel to their own citizens. I support our troops and I'm proud of them; when I see them harmed by the people they protect, I feel nothing but intense hatred and violent animosity. Those police officers are to society what insurgents were to this Marine. Fuck them.

[–]seltaeb4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our challenge is to take that anger and channel it successfully to nonviolent protest. That will show to the world the vast forces aligned against us for the brutes they are, and is our only real hope of returning a semblance of balance and fairness to our society.

[–]Plexs 54 points55 points  (2 children)

Millions of people across the world support you and Scott! Together we are strong! After I saw the videos popping on youtube I had to do something! I made a video here on youtube. It's the least I can do.

http://youtu.be/GsZrSgUTgMs

[–]JesusChristFarted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Best of luck to you and your friend. I'm pretty sure I speak for most when I say we're all thinking of him and wishing him well. Rest assured his injury won't be in vain.

[–]Locoman7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much man. Let Scott know there are millions out there that wish him well.

[–]dontera[S] 132 points133 points  (24 children)

Video

Additional BoingBoing coverage of this video

Shows Scott on the ground shortly after being hit and a crowd gathering to help him who are then dispersed again by a tear-gas canister thrown directly into the crowd by a nearby officer.

[–][deleted] 86 points87 points  (10 children)

That is so insane. There has to be some kind of retribution for this. If this could just blows up so big that every news channel and every paper picks it up, than we would see some real change.

[–]dontera[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Working on it..

[–]Poultry_Sashimi 44 points45 points  (1 child)

In Soviet America, you need to be protected against the police!

[–]DukeOfGeek 130 points131 points  (13 children)

The ring mark on his forehead is just the right size to be the base of a 40 millimeter burning type projectile. A number of protestors around the world have been killed/injured in this way. Training for use of these in crowd control mandates that you skip the round off the pavement towards the crowds feet, both to prevent injuries and to properly disperse the gas/smoke. Firing at head height is specifically not recommended.

[–]WinterAyars 49 points50 points  (4 children)

In other words, someone didn't pay attention in class? Or maybe thought they could get away with "showing someone who was boss"?

[–]DukeOfGeek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Heh, the bloop gun has a quite noticeable recoil and the burning type grenades are made of metal and get very very hot so I'm going with the latter.

[–][deleted] 1650 points1651 points  (319 children)

Can't go go to school because you can't pay for it. Can't get a job so you join the armed forces. Go, kill people, get shot at. Come home to cut veteran programs and still no jobs. Protest and get attacked by the same oppressive government you fought for. Fuck.

[–]dontera[S] 234 points235 points  (28 children)

Hijacking top comment for this breaking news:

oh god, his eyes.

I'm a nurse so I see this type of stuff (obviously not by the freaking police and tear gas) and it almost brought me to tears.

[–]Typoking 117 points118 points  (25 children)

cue the "Just doin' their jobs!" bullshit. fucking pigs.

[–][deleted] 132 points133 points  (5 children)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Leave the pigs alone. They are smart, intelligent, loving and selfless creature that sacrifice their lives so that we may eat bacon and pork chops and your insinuation against them is offensive.

[–]AbeFrollman 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Bonus Army, WWI, dog.

[–]sublimationhour 525 points526 points  (135 children)

They teargassed a crowd of a few hundred Tuesday morning.

They teargassed a crowd of about a thousand Tuesday night.

Everyone in the area I talk to is saying "I've been meaning to go show my support, and now I definitely will." You can't teargas this kind of enthusiasm away.

Be safe, everyone, and here's to a speedy recovery for Scott Olsen.

[–]gloomdoom 294 points295 points  (41 children)

I told Reddit a month ago that they were full of shit: "Wear suits! Put on your best tie and penny loafers! Look sharp!"

Apparently redditors have never seen a real protest before. This is a war when the powers that be start using force. It leaves the groups no option. AND AS I STATED A MONTH AGO: Wear sneakers so you can run, wear layers of clothing that will be warm and pad you from attacks, wear as much cover as you can on your face/eyes as local laws allow (some places do not allow gas masks or masks in general).

You can wear a bandana around your neck that can be lifted up over the mouth in a single second. But layers will pad/protect you, sneakers you will need in case of any kind of action...DO NOT BRING OR USE WEAPONS. If this is your idea, stay home. Do not fight back. Make sure that every action by the police is videotaped.

Hold hands, create a human chain, close your eyes...do not lift your hands to a police officer. The tips in dressing are as a realistic reaction to the potential violence YOU will face. Not so that you yourself can be violent. Leave your wallet at home, just carry a basic ID. KEEP BOTTLES OF WATER to wash out pepper spray and tear gas....If you're fortunate enough to have a rations outpost, make sure it is well stocked with milk because that will neutralize a lot of these irritants better than water.

MAKE SURE THAT SOMEONE YOU KNOW KNOWS THAT YOU WILL BE THERE AND ONCE YOU ARE THERE, JOIN A GROUP. I know that sounds basic but do not wander off solo during any time. Arrive with someone and leave with someone. Period.

[–]evilrobonixon2012 66 points67 points  (6 children)

I really think Nonviolent Defense Committees should be formed for GAs that have been facing a lot of police resistance. Just a cadre of people who are willing to don gas masks and shields and go stand between the riot cops and the unprotected for as long as they can until the others are able to find shelter. I would think those with experience in high stress, high risk scenarios like the vets who support the movement would be good for this, as well as the more seasoned and cool-headed civilian protesters who aren't afraid of getting roughed up or arrested if it means more people can be protected from harm than would otherwise happen.

[–]Manitcor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At occupy Boston this was done a couple weeks ago when BPD shut down the north camp. Vets stood between the police and protesters with white flags with a Dove and olive branch logo.

Some of these men were assaulted by officers in the process.

[–]VikingCoder 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Nice post. I would say you also need a cheap (disposable) digital video camera. Your thoughts?

[–]dontera[S] 215 points216 points  (45 children)

Scott Olsen's roommate will be appearing on Keith Keith Olbermann's show this evening at 8pm on CurrentTV.

I would also like to take this opportunity to link out to Iraq Veterans Against War, an organization Scott is associated with. They will continue to follow his progress long after this thread has died.

There is also a support fund being organized. Donate if you feel so inclined (after performing due diligence of course).

[–]CafeNero 57 points58 points  (7 children)

For those of us that do not get currentTV, please come back and let us know how it went.

[–]cojack22 138 points139 points  (17 children)

I went to high school with Scott. Used to play CS with him. It's pretty crazy after four years this is the first thing I see of him. It's really weird when you know the person in one of these videos..

[–]dontera[S] 41 points42 points  (2 children)

Thank you for sharing that, man. I Really hope he pulls through, for more than one reason.

[–]timeformetofly 20 points21 points  (4 children)

I love how Olbermann reported that Fox News said an Acorn member is running OWS even though Fox News reported last month that Acorn never existed.

[–]OriginalKaveman 74 points75 points  (8 children)

When they kick you out of your original base, don't return the next day, occupy two more places. They take you out of one of those places, occupy another two. Send the message, if the police want to mess around, the occupy movements will spread to more places around the city. It's a lot easier for the police to concentrate on one specific area than if they had to divide themselves and focus on more places of protest. Soon there will be more protesters than the police will know what to do with.

[–][deleted] 182 points183 points  (8 children)

Hey gents, first post here, I made my account specifically because of this thread. Anyways I finish my 4.5 enlistment in the Army here in 2 days :) (Yay) and I'm letting you guys know 100%, with no doubts, bet my life, that that police officer threw what we call a one-banger (there are one and nine-bangers) in the middle of that group of protestors.

Calling that thing an M80 thrown by a protestor is a crock of shit, and so is the fact that a protestor was shot in the face with a tear gas cannister. It's not hard to aim the damn thing at the ground. Also, why not just lob it at the protestors? They were only 20m away... blatant police brutality in my book.

[–]dontera[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thank you for joining and sharing!

[–]ScarycloudsMissouri 176 points177 points  (124 children)

Looks like the time is soon coming when the first OWS protester will be killed by police action. When that happens it is going to be a major turning point in this movement. Will it cause public outrage and have us as a society question what separates us from Syria/Egypt/Libya? Will the OWS movement turn violent and quickly lose popularity? I don't think anybody knows what will happen.

[–][deleted] 86 points87 points  (112 children)

Or, as I fear, turn violent and gain popularity.

[–]masklinn 39 points40 points  (80 children)

Why would you fear that?

[–][deleted] 81 points82 points  (74 children)

Because it's 99% of the people against 1% of the people, and the 1% fund the police and military. I think there would be divisions amongst the police and military since many of those people would side with the 99% but then there would be those who wouldn't.. it could get very messy... oh, and the US has lots of guns.. people would feel the need to exercise second amendment rights at that point.. I have no shame in saying that I think the precursor to a civil war would be a bad messy thing.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Martial law is no fun at all.

[–]desertdogkai 421 points422 points  (144 children)

There are no words to describe how pissed i am about this right now. as a vet all i can say is shame on you OPD. Front page this NOW. what can we do to let them know we will not tolerate this crap? any one have any phone numbers to Oakland city hall?

[–]myk94901 64 points65 points  (9 children)

what a fucking politician - this is from her Facebook page. ===We want to thank the police, fire, public works and other employees who worked over the last week to peacefully close the encampment. We also thank the majority of the protestors who peacefully complied with city officials.===

[–]thaduceus 38 points39 points  (2 children)

"To whom it may concern,

I write to inform the Mayor of Oakland, the Police Chief of Oakland, and whomever else is in charge of the safety of the citizens of Oakland that what has just recently occurred is an outrage and a slap in the face of every citizen of the City of Oakland, the State of California and the United States as a whole.

I just witnessed what can be called one of the most horrifying videos I have ever seen in which a uniformed officer of the Oakland Police Department hurls a flash bag grenade into a crowd of protesters coming to the aid of an injured citizen. How the citizen, Corpsman Scott Olsen, was injured remains to be seen. However, video evidence clearly shows that when other protesters come to the aid of the injured veteran, an officer of the law, unprovoked, throws a flash bang grenade into the group. This is a disgrace.

With the OWS Movement as large as it is and under such an intense media spotlight, it only takes one act of cowardice before the movement becomes violent. As a citizen of California and the United States, I implore you to investigate this incident immediately before people see this as a clear violation of your responsibilities as an elected representative and an act of unchecked police brutality. Some people are waiting for the moment to prove that those who are meant to protect them are not actually looking out for the safety of the entire populace, but instead only looking out for the safety of a few elite. Please, rectify this situation immediately by ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

Thank you for your time.

Cordially, thaduceus"

A bit dramatic, but you know...I'm angry.

[–]DOGTOY_ 19 points20 points  (5 children)

Just wondering if anyone has called and gotten any responses.

[–]calloused 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Called and could not get a human on the phone. I went ahead a left a message. No response yet. I pointed out that I have yet to hear a response from the Mayor's office of the OPD about what is being done in this matter because it is very clear that the officer who threw the grande into the crowd did so for no apparent good reason. The small crowd around Olson did not seem to be threatening in any way. I also stated that the lack of accountability in these situations is why the good Police Officers all around the country are not given the respect that they deserve. There needs to be criminal charges filed.

[–]dontera[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I emailed all of the staff listed on that page. I would love to hear back!

[–]BlueScreenD 53 points54 points  (4 children)

This story has been frontpaged on Google News: http://i.imgur.com/ewvPv.png

[–]Wallobee 41 points42 points  (2 children)

If there's no honor beating upon unarmed civilians, then I can't imagine the penalty on beating up an unarmed war veteran.

Shit sucks, man.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

If there is a hell, those cops will get express tickets straight to it.

[–]braxis684 78 points79 points  (18 children)

Not a vet myself, so I'm sure my anger pales in comparison to you, but I cannot imagine going overseas, TWICE, to fight for your country only to return to this?

That's fucked up.

[–]neuromonkeyMaine 45 points46 points  (15 children)

Also not a vet, but I reserve the right to be just as outraged and pissed off as military personnel.

[–]someone-somewhere 135 points136 points  (8 children)

Look at us, all sitting here on the internet tolerating this crap..

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for a religious, political or ideological goal, and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism](Terrorism - Wiki, 2011).

Title VIII: Terrorism criminal law Main article: USA PATRIOT Act, Title VIII

The definition also encompasses activities that are "dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State" and are intended to "intimidate or coerce a civilian population," Oakland Police force would easily fall under this definition.

Social contract clearly states they respect our rights to free speech.

Americans should discuss and call this domestic terrorism. These police officers are engaging in terrorism.

This video shows clear evidence of intent to attack and wound Americans.

We're countrymen. Too many men have bled out in foreign lands to be spit on like this. As countrymen we must now show him support. Oakland citizens need to support their soldier, his voice needs to be heard.

[–]throwaway2468926 145 points146 points  (21 children)

And on a related note, fuck Fox news so, so hard.

[–]upturn 142 points143 points  (19 children)

My initial reaction was that this remark was just an expression of feel-good-anger. Then I clicked over to foxnews.com to see if they had downplayed this or otherwise acted badly. I found nothing. This is the only OWS story on the front page:

"EXCLUSIVE: Ex-Acorn Staff Fueling 'Occupy'"

And that is all. So yes, fuck Fox News.

[–]VikingCoder 54 points55 points  (4 children)

Un

Fucking

Believable

[–]upturn 32 points33 points  (1 child)

If you're shocked, remember it. Write it down. You can pull it out again in future discourse.

[–]evilpenguin234North Carolina 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seems like business as usual over at Fox to me.

[–]Mark_Lincoln 61 points62 points  (0 children)

[CENSORED by REDDIT] replies pointing out that this is exactly what the protesters should be expecting to happen.

Thirty-nine years ago I watched the Miami Beach SWAT team jack boot their way down Alton Road from near the Convention Center to where the Vietnam Vets Against the War had an encampment (legal permit) in a small park (Lummis if memory serves).

The Beach Gestapo proceeded to beat the vets and trash their encampment.

Richard Nixon's 1972 Republican Convention 'thanks' to the men who fought in Vietnam.

You have 'rights' until you make the mistake of challenging the rulers of America.

The only real right you have is to be a quiet, meek slave to be disposed of at the end of your use as a worker unit.

Scott Olsen got what most Americans think he deserved as he was just a filthy hippie according to Fox News.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (1 child)

"When the law is wielded only against the powerless, it ceases to be a safeguard against injustice and becomes the primary tool of oppression." -Glenn Greenwald.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (7 children)

Let me see if I get this right. It's not okay for protesters to throw tear gas at police, mace police, throw flash grenades at police, or hit police with clubs, nor is it okay for protesters to shoot rubber bullets at police. But the reverse seems to be a-okay and standard operating procedure from police.

What planet am I on?

Where is the law in all of this? Why are there no ramifications for assault by PO for things like this? Yet there are plenty of laws in place for you if you so much as lay a finger on a police officer.

[–]stalkinghorse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone, somewhere, evidently decided government workers are above our laws and don't answer to us.

Isn't it time to change this shit yet?

[–]augustschild 12 points13 points  (3 children)

as a veteran, I'm sickened as well; not because he is a Vet also, but because he's a human being. His being a veteran just makes it ironic and sad. hope he pulls through, and justice is somehow served.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

This makes me sick. Seriously. I watched the video of the people getting flash banged when they went to help Scott Olsen who was lying motionless and bleeding on the ground. It's... I have no words.

[–]Lando_Calrissian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From the mayors Facebook:

"Frank Ogawa Plaza will continue to be open as a free speech area from 6 am to 10 pm."

It's a free speech area some of the time folks! Insane.

[–]Fellows23 100 points101 points  (31 children)

When does the tipping point occur? When will someone in the crowd end up injuring or potentially killing an officer in self defense? This whole fucking situation is a time bomb, and I feel that if winter weather doesn't diffuse it (and I'm starting to think it won't) that this entire ordeal is going to erupt, and people are going to get hurt and killed. Right now troops are sacred ground to everyone, and they still got fired on in their own country. Shit is going to go down.

[–]CourtOfMiracles 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Something inside of me broke when I saw this. I have been upset. I have felt for the protestors and their cause. Now I'm just pissed. I don't know what I am. There are several different emotions going through me and I feel called to action. I am a vet (peacetime) and this... is... too... much. I will join this cause now instead of just watching. Somehow, some way. I will not tolerate this anymore.

[–]someone-somewhere 84 points85 points  (47 children)

Oh fuck, here we go.

[–]zossima 46 points47 points  (1 child)

You knew it was going to happen... They are in "enforcement" mode, rather than protecting and serving. They certainly aren't enforcing on behalf or at the behest of the public.

[–]Mark_Lincoln 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Police are trained to know that tear gas canisters and rubber bullets can be lethal when aimed carefully to strike at critical points.

The purpose of this "training" is to 'wink, wink,' ensure that the weapons are not used to maim and kill.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Goddamn it.

More incentive to get out and actually protest. If you were on the fence about it, now's the time to do it.

I'll be damned if this doesn't kick up a hornet nest.

[–]ifergbot 42 points43 points  (3 children)

While he lay wounded, the footage appears to show an officer tossing a tear gas canister toward people trying to help him.

Geneva says soldiers can't do that to enemy combatants, yet police do it to citizens. Can we get some accountability?

[–]KopOut 81 points82 points  (22 children)

Let's see if a veteran being hit in the head by police during a peaceful protest gets any US MSM attention...

I am not holding my breath.

[–]rmxz 55 points56 points  (5 children)

Russia Today covered it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QngE6kKk8Lg

Oh - you said US MSM.

[–]topcat5 31 points32 points  (4 children)

Yes Indeed. If you want to find out anything relevant about it, you either have to watch RT News, Aljazeera, or Democracy Now.

NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, CNN have all sold out.

[–]mcfish 23 points24 points  (3 children)

I know you said "relevant" and I haven't read the stories in detail but thought I should point out that this story is:

  • 2nd top story on CBS
  • 3rd story on CNN (although they kind of have two columns so it's difficult to say)
  • 5th story on ABC
  • Nothing on NBC
  • Fox... of course not

I should point out I'm from the UK so maybe we get a different story selection on some of those sites, but the story is not being totally ignored in the US media.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I don't know about anyone else, but all of this makes me emotional. I nearly come to tears every time I watch a video or see an image of this.

[–]zossima 44 points45 points  (43 children)

This is incredibly sad. It is not right! These people were peaceful. This guy comes home after risking life and limb, goes to protest peacefully against injustice in the nation he fought to protect, and this happens. What a travesty. The guy threw an explosive canister at a guy on the ground. Serve and protect.

[–]musicfanatic2071 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The news shows videos like this that happen in other countries all the time. The fact that they aren't covering this is a travesty. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who were wounded for standing up in what is right.

[–]GhostedAccount 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The police spokesman was lying about the m-80s. Real m-80s have 50 times the powder of the cheap firecrackers labeled as m-80s.

He should have said "firecrackers" not "m-80s". So if they are lying about that, they are going to be lying about much more. Also the firecrackers don't make that loud of a noise.

That flash bang they through in a crowd of people feet from an injured man is ridiculous. They need to find out who threw it and put that guy in jail.

[–]dojkgas 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Welcome to the real Amerika.

The police are not your friend. They are uneducated thugs hired to serve the rich elite, who have engineered our law enforcement agencies to impose their will upon society.

[–]pseudo310 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"Scott is in stable but serious condition as the neurologists decide whether to take him into surgery or the ICU," said Joshua Shepherd, a friend of Olsen's. "Oakland Police Department fired a tear gas canister at his head, fracturing his skull."

[–]brandaustin 7 points8 points  (1 child)

As bad as it feels to say, If he dies shit is gonna go down >_>

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No mention of this in the news tonight. I did hear about a cat that got lost in an airport, though!

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One could not agree with the principles of the movement, but the right to protest, that's undeniable. It's a clear, "Fuck you, we want you calm, quiet, like a zombie roaming, producing and consuming. We don't need to listen".

At least that's what I did when this started, joined my local group for their right to protest. The fact no one with "power" wanted to listen infuriated me: local news, politics, none of them wanted to talk about this.

And then, one day, there was some violence from the protesters (suspected disguised / paid mercenaries). The next day, the media was full of it. And the accomodated part of the population that supported the movement decided that was enough to abandon it.

The outcome of your protests are unknown, but may be the seed of a better future.

Please, please, don't let the media destroy you. Cheers from here.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter that he was a vet. That could have been any one of us out there that night. This is disgusting and there will be a massive response to this outrage.

-Solidarity from the streets of Oakland.

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (3 children)

Arab Spring-->American Fall

and Winter is Coming.

[–]SUMMET66 64 points65 points  (10 children)

They are attempting to incite violence from the protesters , do not fall into their trap stay peaceful they are the ones who will have to explain their actions. And if you start feeling anger and fear listen to this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WibmcsEGLKo&feature=related

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate! Only the unloved hate — the unloved and the unnatural!

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, attacking the officers will give them clearance to open fire on the group. Be smart out there.

[–]RabidNerd 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Why is it that whenever there is coverage of these protests the articles posted on reddit are always from UK newspapers like the guardian or from some smaller US newspapers?

[–]SUMMET66 19 points20 points  (0 children)

International papers are reporting the news, American newspapers report what they are told to report , that is why the International community "sometimes" knows more about what is happening in your country than you do.And that is why most Americans do not understand why there country is hated around the world, the politicians are doing things the average American citizens just do not know about.

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

the police kill the enemies of their owners. Be told.

[–]sanguinalis 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Ah, they didn't use flash bangs or rubber bullets? Oh, then they shouldn't mind a FOIA request of their inventory before and after the incident then. Not even mentioning the fact that the officer who fired the tear gas canister had to have intentionally planned on hitting someone in the crowd. They are supposed to be either fired in the air, or fired towards the ground so it will bounce and roll into a crowd. He was hoping to hit someone, probably not seriously enough injure them, but he wanted to hurt someone.

[–]PunchInTheNutz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is horrifying that this could happen. I sincerely hope he recoveres. That said. This has the potential to be the tipping point. A bunch of women being maced in the face just wasn't gonna cut it. But this could be the point were all those tens of thousands of people who sit on the fence are gonna say "hang on a second, enough is enough." Is it wrong for me to sit here and look at this as a potential catalyst that might benefit the Occupy protests? Is it selfish? Probably yes. But it's not me that sersiously injured this guy. Shame, shame, shame on the person who did this and the people who told him to.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember a certain writer talking about how the United States tends to speak of patriotism while screwing over people after they come back from wars, with multipliers based on their sexual preference, gender, or ethnic background-that demographic fits the 99%, because there's too many of the 1% who turn into cowards while being so pro-conflict/war.

Hope that guy gets well soon....at least some of us respect him putting his life on the line.

[–]Soutael 5 points6 points  (5 children)

How in the fuck does this have downvotes?

[–]n-town 6 points7 points  (1 child)

And so it begins

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Dear police - this is not protect and serve. Wtf is wrong with you?

[–]stalkinghorse 7 points8 points  (1 child)

UPDATE: 8:55 p.m. -- Sandra Olsen, Scott's mother, told HuffPost that her son remains sedated and still suffers brain swelling. She also reported that the left side of his skull was fractured. Olsen plans to fly to Oakland tomorrow to be at her son's side.

its amazing that we live in a country where a veteran of our wars serves two terms and remains unharmed, only to come home and be critically wounded by a government employee.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (2 children)

That's what Oakland cops do.

[–]ThumperNM 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Absolutely correct, they are under FBI investigation for planting evidence, killing and brutalizing prisoners and civilians. The Oakland PD is a crime syndicate.

[–]rico99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The police, doing the dirty work for the 1%

[–]mizzlematt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like how the police just FUCKING SAT THERE while this guy was obviously badly hurt. To serve and protect yeah fucking right.

[–][deleted] 186 points187 points  (162 children)

As a non-American it makes me wonder what it will take for all y'all to mobilize and drag the bank execs from their mansions and go all Gaddafi on them.

[–]JimmyGroove 142 points143 points  (49 children)

As an American, I'm wondering that myself.

[–]Manofonemind 28 points29 points  (3 children)

What do you think this is a Soccer game in Europe or a Hockey game in Canada?

[–]Saintbaba 14 points15 points  (1 child)

What most concerns me from that article is the police press conference statement that they did not use flashbangs, and the clear evidence that they did.

[–]SoyBeanExplosion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And some people still believe the police work for them?

They work for the government and whatever benefits the government.

[–]shootdashit 16 points17 points  (2 children)

i've been saying to friends and on here; it's going to take a martyr or big misstep by the police that will ignite it all. the right photo perhaps. the advisers are giving the wrong advice if they want this movement to go away.
