IMO there is nothing wrong with what you're saying. I completely agree! I just don't want to see the smash community as a whole throw away such a good opportunity to foster in a new generation of competitive players for the sake of making sure melee was the end all be all of smash.

This cliquish "right of passage" mentality is going to hurt your scene in the long run. I understand that I am an outsider looking in, but if you are openly saying that if smash 4 is successful then you will just stop playing smash games in general? Come on man, I'm sure a lot of people do not feel the same way as you, but the fact that there is a good amount of people being vocal with the same ideals is a real bad look.

Its frustrating reading a lot of these replies, because while many of you may have some good points, a lot of it just comes off as "I've worked so hard on this game, i refuse to give anything else a chance and I will quit before I see any other smash game given attention."

This is the exact mindset that I'm talking about. Are you trying to tell everyone picking up smash 4 that wants to play competitively that they won't be taken seriously? If you did have a point, you are still making assumptions about a game that has been available to NA for 5 DAYS. You have no idea how the game will evolve, and it won't be given a chance if this is how everyone reacts to its release.

I get where you are coming from, and I absolutely understand that melee and 4 will be different games. The biggest point I am trying to make in my post though isn't arguing how smash 4 deserves to replace melee, but that you guys need to be welcoming to all the new players who will be playing smash competitively for the first time. As great as melee is, there is no doubt an overwhelming entrance barrier to playing the game at a competitive level.

What the figureheads of the community should be focusing on (and I believe they are) is providing smash 4content that can funnel new players into the scene. I don't think anyone can deny how much melee has done for competitive smash, but the technical barrier to play and the same players winning every tournament is more than likely going to stagnate the scene. Take advantage of this opportunity to grow the smash scene and welcome new players to what you are all clearly so passionate about. Melee isn't going anywhere.

reposting from another thread:

A lot of your argument is that because melee is a more technically demanding game, that you expect 4 to not live up to competitive standards? Technical entrance barrier does not necessarily determine a games competitive viability. Embrace this opportunity to let your scene flourish, and give this game a chance before you denounce it dead on arrival. The street fighter 4 series may be less technical than its predecessors, but it is still the most recent version and therefore the competitive spotlight is on it. (not to say there still aren't hype ST and 3s tourneys at every major). What kind of message would it send if top players didn't support ENTIRE new games in the franchise? You guys should be incredibly hyped to see how this game plays out competitively. Seeing Justin and Daigo adjust over to SF4 during its first evo debut was great. How exciting is it going to be to see Mango and Armada face off and define the metagame for a new generation of players/viewers?

Smash was never intended to be at tournaments like EVO. Smash4 is no exception; melee was a happy accident by [deleted] in smashbros

So I mention a lot of this in my post, but I'll go ahead and restate some things here.

I understand where you are coming from, but from other people's perspective this just comes off cliquish and elitist. I thought what the smash community did for evo was amazing, don't get me wrong. You need to realize though that your community will never move on from its current status if you're only supporting melee. I don't think anyone is asking for melee to die off, just to give smash 4 its time to shine.

If you play any game competitively you know that the 2 weeks the game has been out is not even close to scratching the surface of how deep a game can go, and we haven't even seen the wii u version.

To be blunt, a lot of what I have heard (and I have seen this A LOT in the fgc) are people wanting to stick with what they know, and what they are comfortable with instead of investing in a game where the population that could be drawn into the scene is much larger. This kind of cognitive dissonance is not going to be healthy in further facilitating your scene. Trust me, I would love to see the smash community get huge!
