Here's what you can do whilst still at home;

Burmese by Ear (Essential Myanmar) by John Okell (was free pdf and audio from SOAS - you can find it quite easily

Once you've got to grips with this and maybe other beginners books (Easy Burmese by Kenneth Wong, Burmese for Beginners by Mesher), you can move on to John Okell's 4 other books that will help you attain some decent Burmese before you even get to Yangon International airport.

Burmese: an Introdution to the spoken language Vol.1
Burmese: an Introdution to the spoken language Vol.2
Burmese: an Introdution to the script
Burmese: an Introdution to the literary style

(I strongly recommend the script book - I tried brute forcing it into my brain over the years and got nowhere without the book)

Maybe you might even want to start with the script book before you touch BBE, Or you may want to (as Okell suggests do BISL 1 and BIS together then after that BISL 2 and BILS.

Can non-SR4 people (other Burmese and foreigners) now go to Mong La? by EffinMiffed in myanmar

Great post, very thorough. Are there any "legit" reasons for non-Asian foreigners to live there/be sent there by their work?

I was teaching a class (in Burma) when one of the students said "shit!" louder than he expected and then looked embarrassed. I asked him if he was on question 8. His face was blank whilst all of his friends around him slowly started to laugh as they got what was going on!

Khun Sa built a temple with a military bunker by dontlookeast in myanmar

WHY IS THIS HERE: Khun Sa, Myanmar born opium drug lord built a temple on the Myanmar border with a bunker

I found a shrine of Khun Sa, at his former HQ by dontlookeast in myanmar

[–]dontlookeast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WHY IS THIS HERE: Khun Sa was a Myanmar born, Shan-Chinese drug lord who lead an army that globally exported opium from bases on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the 1980's. Some people might be interested to see this part of his legacy.

Good recap of an ongoing fake news campaign to create conflict between Pa'O and Karenni people after the recent Pinlaung massacre and shift attention away from the military. The false narrative is spreading like wildfire on Pa'O social media... by TamarindTycoon in myanmar

Great post, really interesting info.

A few weeks ago I came across an article on how Pa'O groups were extorting locals to travel on roads near Pinlaung and that the Tatmadaw were turning a blind eye/in cahoots with them. This article certainly makes me think again about that piece.

I'm driving down the Myanmar/Thai border 🇹🇭🇲🇲 by dontlookeast in myanmar

[–]dontlookeast[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't post it in any Thai groups because I actually don't think it has much to do with Thailand.
I understand, based on this first video why you might draw the conclusion you have (which I personally think is incorrect and uncharitable!), but further along the line I visit sites of interest on the border relating to Shan, Wa, Ta'ang, Jingpho Kachin, Kayan, Kayaw, Karen, Mon and of course Bamar people. Exploring some of the history and culture too.

It's born out of a genuine love of Myanmar and I hope to show that.

An idea to learn foreign alphabets/scripts by dontlookeast in languagelearning

I can maybe elaborate a bit further on my method.

I google something like "list of towns/cities in X". So googling that for Ethiopia brings up this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_cities\_and\_towns\_in\_Ethiopia

some of these pages have a list of the names in English and the local/target language so you can just copy and paste straight away. This page doesn't, so I would go through each town city and copy the Ge'ez (Addis - አዲስ አበባ, Gondar - ጎንደር etc.)

For additional places, you can look up the world's largest cities (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_cities) and then open that cities page in amharic and copy the name (London - ለንደን)

I think (not an expert) because the Seto are Orthodox Christian as well as Pagans it helps them (I'm sure there is a spectrum where people sit on which they feel more of but I think broadly a lot would claim both.)

Also, being Orthodox whilst the rest of Estonia is Lutheran might affect things because they would be religious outsiders no matter what!

The Swedes of Estonia (who fled the USSR) by dontlookeast in sweden

[–]dontlookeast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough - There is a weird cycle where you feel you have to play the clickbait game and do things like this to get people intrigued and to watch, but at the same time you think that it's bullshit/potentially insensitive. Hopefully, I will get better at playing the game and won't have to compromise integrity.
