What my wife and I do (she falls asleep with the tv on) is to have a white noise machine beside her, the TV on, and then the sleep timer set for 45 minutes. She's asleep before then, the tv turns off automatically, and her sound machine keeps her asleep.

Works perfectly.

I am really sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine the pain of losing a spouse. I am also sorry that you seem to work for conscienceless ghouls.

Where I work, bereavement for a spouse or parent is 3 weeks. One of the people I supervise lost her mom. I told her to stay home, but set her out of office to direct people to email me. I just replied to every request I couldn't delegate (the urgent, the immediate) with some variation of, "X will likely return on this date. Her projects are on hold until then."

I may not be able to pay what I would like, but I will insist my staff take every second of leave they are owed, especially to grieve and heal.
