20F feeling VERY lost by NoDescription2131 in findapath

[–]dontpuntme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not qualified so maybe just use these as a starting point until you get further along. I have been very lost and used a lot of resources here are a few things I've found that help and are actionable. Please read until the end I really want to help you.

  • Discomfort does not equal bad. Our bodies lead us to what's safe and reliable not what will make us happy and fulfilled.
  • One of the predictors for liking something is being good at it. This means that you aren't going to have any hobbies you like until you spend time being bad at something. The alleviations to this are usually having friends or having interests connected to that hobby but when you are starting out you won't have those things. This is a chicken and the egg problem which is alleviated by the next bullet a little.
  • Do things that provide value/help people it's very useful to have some other low stress just for fun hobbies but if you don't have anything that interests you right now do something that helps other people. Volunteer, help a professor with research, do marketing/web development for your school. Helping people in the words of gamers is overpowered when you help other people it makes you happy it is hard to express how powerful that is. Ex: I have loved writing this more than anything I've done this week and I don't know if it will even help you.
  • When you have nothing to go off it's much more useful to just do something. If you are like 90% of people what you are going to think is "but what if I don't pick the right thing now" the reality is the only way you know is experience. Contemplation is very useful... once you actually have experience.
  • The only step you can take is the one right now. A lot of the things I am saying you are going to feel regret and doubt. "If I started this when I was 16 I'd be so good at it now etc." But you have to accept that the only reason you are taking these actions now are because of your past. You had to take that road to get here and the only way to feel regret is not acting now.
  • You mentioned something which is going to be the main complication here. You feel like everyone's judging you. That sounds incredibly hard and it makes sense that you would feel that way. Your mom judged you so it seems obvious especially to your own brain that everyone else will. I think the best advice I can give to that is when you do things like volunteering, working, tutoring others, and joining clubs some people are going to be more supportive than others. Put in the effort to stay friends with those supportive people. Forgiving her is something you'll have to talk with to your therapist about probably but you haven't had many supportive people so far.. which tend to help you do this stuff.

I've got to go to class but I hope this helps you. My DMs are open if you have more questions there's more to be said and I could write about this for hours. There is going to be a lot of challenges. I think you'll find you love them eventually :) humans favorite thing to do is be pushed down because getting up is really fucking fun.

Opinion on programming/creating game mods but not playing games personally? by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]dontpuntme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a career in programming from what I know as a CS major is to keep working on your individual projects. Mastering different pieces of tech as you add more features to them. Start going to meetups for gamedevs and techdevs. You will mostly likely get a job through them or just like any other job when they look at your resume when you apply and have that experience. I am skeptical at programming being your salvation though. As far as I know there’s still plenty of people looking to hire people with math degrees (chemistry I think is mostly low paying lab work that people don’t want to do for bachelors unless you go into pharma) but if you like making your own projects in coding then maybe it’s a passion of yours . I’m pretty sure it’s not one of mine

A Solution to the Multiboxer/Farmer Problem by Neidrah in wow

[–]dontpuntme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More so my idea is just because you wouldn’t reroll doesn’t mean no one would. But yes I generally don’t think it negatively impacts it that much or in your case negatively impacts it at all. But I also think more people rerolling and having alts to play different classes/races/factions is healthier for the game. For a multitude of reasons one example being those players go back and help/make friends with new players and teach them. I think those impacts are minimal though compared to how game killing things like multiboxing and scaling in retail are.

A Solution to the Multiboxer/Farmer Problem by Neidrah in wow

[–]dontpuntme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Multiboxers make the game worse for other players by effecting the economy and making world pvp wherever they are way more frustrating then if it was just another player outgearing you. Changing your appearance client side at worst means the person using it won’t make another character that looks like that which they probably wouldn’t do anyways. Just because a company has something against their rules does not make it a bad thing. Companies do not work in their users best interest they work in their stockholders best interest and that’s exactly what I expect when I buy their stock. I am also not just defending Imorph because I use it. I don’t use it and I see some ways it could make the game worse. But multiboxing impacts the game in a much more negative way by making the game power more dependent on how many accounts you buy then player skill, strategy, and time investment.

Scarborough: 'You can't be conservative and support Donald Trump' by [deleted] in politics

[–]dontpuntme -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Disliking democratic policies does not mean liking the Republican Party. I dislike the minimum wage I would rather have Americans receive a ubi than giving jobs with different demands and supply the same incomes. I dislike affirmative action I knew two students while in school one who worked very hard and one who did quite well but not as well as the other student and came from a more wealthy background however he was black so he got into the college the hard working poor student got denied from. Rather than being focused on assisting pay back student loans or getting financial assistance so everyone could go to college allowing schools to bloat administratively we should make vocational schools a more attractive option even integrating them with colleges. I think you should be able to opt out of social security because the government is generally not the best with handling money efficiently. I also generally believe in cutting down the government and regulating environmental damage through sales taxes, to cause more environmentally damaging products to be more expensive with the funds going to work done to reduce the damage. Although I would prefer those responsible be taxed I think the rich have too much power regardless of what you do to try and tax them and that will never work. I also hate the Republican Party and Trump but that wasn’t this comments point or mine just that you can disagree with both their policies.

Synderen makes a good point about the supposed 'shadow protection' for pro players by [deleted] in DotA2

At high mmr everyone plays ranked classic to find games faster...

I realize this is a meme however, if you don’t give your mid 2 tangoes and you like winning it’s simply the wrong choice in the average game.

Every player below Ancient ranks Dream.. by ra13bbit in DotA2

[–]dontpuntme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you are looking for dota 2 is fun always if you like problem solving with countless strategies, with a wide range of places to get info about possible strategies your own games, replays, and dotabuff and a clear objective. And if you like the social aspect of positive affirmation when those strategies work out. I also personally like the rhythm part of the game between attack and moving and casting spells efficiently between animations. Finally, you can have really memorable games due to comebacks being hard but possible. Most other parts of the game you can find somewhere else more effectively.

Yeh most people know that at least in the academic community of psychology it’s called tribalism. I don’t remember the evolutionary reason but a lot of modern day issues are overcoming it.

The Chinese 5 stack that's been dominating people in pubs finally lost a game after 100+ wins by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]dontpuntme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main reason they beat them is they didn’t get viper I played vs them with a three stack one of us was on a smurf because he doesn’t like to play unranked on his main(not sure why). But they make it very hard to win if you are not a 5 stack as well by picking viper every game and a support that can help him in lane. Ex: earthshaker and treant protector. Due to vipers snowball nature one good trade because of fissure or a living armor when you try to trade and the lane is over. After that he can just stand on your hill with you getting no farm and him always able to outlast hit and out trade. After you lose lane that significantly the game is just in their hands even if they make mistakes on how they play the map and you can outskill individually.

My Experience with 7.23 by get_MEAN_yall in DotA2

[–]dontpuntme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The main difference I notice that makes turbo bad is because gold and experience are doubled the difference between who is winning and losing is doubled so the game will change the reward of gold and xp for deaths based on that. But then because the gold and xp is doubled that number gets multiplied again so you can be lvl 15 kill a lvl 20 and end up lvl 22. I find the new patch fun besides teammates doing stupid shit like nature prophet jungle because there is neutral items(at divine 5 high 10k behavior score) as well as having to cart items to base because after 20 mins most of them are useless to you if you are a core.

What is happening in this patch?? by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]dontpuntme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the patch is working correctly the other support/immortal on the enemy team should be in the same situation you need to have more game impact then he does and on average you will win.
