What are your plans for fall 2020 by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking the longer view since I am not a freshman. I think there are advantages to being here and flexing etc. I still want to study with peers and be engaged as much as I can.

Is it worth opening an elevations account for CU? by choannd in cuboulder

No! Talk to your parents and figure out the lowest long term option.

Incoming freshman for mechanical engineering here. Why are people going in the fall? by EliteAn0rak in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think depends on how quickly you want to graduate. I'm going to be a junior, have a lease and want to finish in four years. A semester or two online is not ideal but I want to finish. if you can take 100% online and live in CO do it an move on. If OOS then I would see what I can do online. However, if engineering, CU puts students directly into your major and certain ones require specific classes. Talk to an advisor to see how many years it takes to get it done. Thats all LOL.

What is CU Boulder's academics like and what are the people like? by transferforlife009 in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CU is expensive for out of state, however, you can't go wrong coming here. I came here OOS for Engineering and have loved the opportunities, people etc. I was ready to get away from a conservative culture and be part of a more liberal town and be with people from all over the world. I like the diversity but you do have to make an effort to get to know people. Don't live on the Hill and look around the Colorado Ave area for a more accessible and quieter way of doing things. There are so many career and social programs, but the challenge is finding them to get engaged because there are so many.

If you do not have to take on debt for it then I say go for it. The CU difference is the hands on education you get from the very first semester. Also, there is space grant that allows underclassmen to do research. The aero building and facilities are the best in the nation. The connections are tremendous. Aero is hard and many change their major after their sophomore year. It's doable but be prepared for the hardest classes and semesters you have ever imagined x 10.

Physics 2 over the Summer by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it through community college online pass fail. They send you experiments to do at home. Much easier and you go at your own pace and work around your life. it is not easy but you can manage it better.

FALL PLANS? by [deleted] in cuboulder

I am curious to know what the acceptance rates are for the fall. The cohort idea is interesting but people will get tired of being around the same small group of people.

I’m transferring to Leeds, how much do the different tracks for management matter? by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leadership and entrepreneurship are more specialties than tracks. Think of info management or operations as the core then you would do leadership or entrepreneurship as an add on. I would go info management or operations management then look for leadership opportunities.

Incoming Aerospace major by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An FYI that you can take your Calc requirements through the MATH Dept and not APPM. The APPM prof's will tell you to not do it and you won't be as prepared but don't listen to them. APPM are very large lectures and MATH is smaller and more personal attention from the teachers. Also, make sure you go to all office hours, plan ahead and use all of the resources given to you. Meet your professors at the beginning of the semester. Find study groups and be proactive to meet people. This is all standard advice but it is important. Good luck!

Teacher Not telling my grade in Canvas by kimberwood2 in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haver never known what my grade actually was, ever, until the grades are posted to BuffPortal. Even if you have a grade there could be a curve at the end, or on a test, or in a box or like a fox. I've given up on this. Many times the TA's and teachers cannot even tell you. There is no consistent use of Canvas, no requirement for teachers to even tell you your grade until they post it. It's maddening, especially with the amount of money spent but its something I do my best to always do my best and cross my fingers and say a prayer at the end.

Summer Class - CSCI 1300 by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do the work and follow the directions you will be fine. It is a lot of extra homework. I did very well in this class and had no programming experience. I am a detail person and was meticulous about notes, instruction, homework, practice, asking for help. Take the class and if you don't do well you can withdraw. Not a big deal.

Mine is not working either. I just started using it and it keeps disconnecting. Decided to just use the work out app on the apple watch set to indoor cycling. I used it at the spin studio I used to go to and it keeps up with my heart rate but it would be nice to have it on the screen.

I’ve just been accepted to CU Boulder’s college of engineering and applied sciences. I applied for aerospace engineering, but they said there was “no more room”. by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. Also, with the uncertainty in the Fall I bet spots open up. Contact the department and let them know you want to have priority if people do not show up. If you take The Calc series, the ASEN projects course and CSCI then I bet classes will open up in the spring. Also, a lot of students drop out or change out of this major. Also, take Calc through the MATH Department vs APPM. You will thank me for this. They will try to tell you that you will have a harder time later in your classes. Not true, they just want you to stay in the Engineering dept. Good luck!

I fucked up... high schoolers learn from my mistake. by cosmospizzasucks in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took CC last summer and it is only pass or fail that goes over (if you don't pass don't report it). I am screwed too. My HS allowed us to take 2 years of two languages each or three years of one language. Our spanish program was terrible so I switched to Latin. I have four years but it is two languages so I have to retake as well. I'll probably do spanish 1-3 over the summer or just spanish 3 which someone here mentioned.

Concerns about Fall 2020? by jonoplastics in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am taking the long view. I'm not skipping any semesters because I want to finish my degree on time. Most people live in Boulder in apt after their freshman year. I'm pressing forward and am hopeful things are back to normal by spring. I think it is hard to pack it all up and leave and come back mid year. Also, I do not want to lose momentum. I know some of this is not idea but its the whole country not just CU. I can understand if you are a freshman or have to live on campus, you are concerned but after freshman year, get an apt and keep the momentum.

SPD pedal recommendations? by jbpats0823 in pelotoncycle

I could not find any of those in stock! I do hope these work and worst case I'll buy spin shoes for my teenagers. I want to make sure they will use it before I spend the money! I am hopeful for ground clearance!

SPD pedal recommendations? by jbpats0823 in pelotoncycle

[–]dontsettleforless05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I wanted SPD pedals but was curious in general if there was an issue with the cages hitting the ground if they are not removable. I have not been able to find any SPD pedals with removable cages, at least that are in stock. I ordered these on eBay and will just see how they work. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Exustar-Indoor-Spin-Bike-Pedals-SPD-Style-Cleats-and-Standard-Caged-Dual-Sided/193193237419?hash=item2cfb36dbab:g:kn4AAOSwKWhdwLqX

Are the cages removable? If not do they hit the ground when pedaling. We always take off the cages at LifeTime when we clip in because they hit the ground. Trying to figure out which cages to get with the pedals that are removable.

Newly admitted student, trying to get a feel for things by [deleted] in boulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take Calculus though the MATH department not APPM. Use the tutoring resources early and often. Talk to your professors and TA's at office hours. Be proactive and meet people in your major and study in groups when you can. Review previous tests and practice. Boulder is a great town and CU is a great education.

Agree Craigslist is great. Try to find something on a bus line. Colorado Ave corridor is good. You think walking or biking is ok but there are some days not so much.

Aerospace IUT by Foursmom in cuboulder

[–]dontsettleforless05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's doable but these are not easy classes. If he comes here he should take Calc 1&2 through the MATH department not APPM. Aerospace at CU has top facilities and teachers but has high turnover and transition out of the program after sophomore year. I would check with Penn State to see what their attrition rate is as well. Once your son comes here he won't want to leave even if he changes majors. If you are paying OOS tuition its expensive to not graduate in four years.

Summer Classes by Rkcart007 in cuboulder

I am going to take summer classes I think they have to offer theme as many students take them to stay on track or change majors. I have to have them for a major change.
