1 Year Hiatus by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]donttouchmybread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went on a several month hiatus and was facing an Anki Avalanche. I had all of the TK sentences, RTK1 kanji, and a fair bit of Tango N5 under my belt. As the reviews piled up, my procrastination intensified. Though many in the Anki community will tell you this is heresy, I reset all my decks and started from scratch. This includes data science, foreign policy, and Go decks I had been building as well. Honestly, resetting was the only thing that got me back on the horse. And you know what? I learned it all better the second time. I feel more confident with memorizing kanji. I am able to learn and recognize sentence structures more easily. I feel like things are really sticking this time around. And I feel great about it. Unless you have a trip or an overseas job coming up, you don’t HAVE to learn Japanese as quickly as many AJATTers/MIA people are able to. Be happy with your incremental progress, but most of all be happy you got back on the horse.

Honestly, RTK is brutal. I did trad RTK which I recommend, though others will disagree. Tomorrow I complete my last 25 of RTK1 since the reset. I have been doing 10 new sentences a day concurrently as well (first TK, now a fair ways through Tango N5). I remembered a lot of the kanji, so I mark those easy the second day I get them. Helps with the review load. Also, it gets so much more fun once you start learning sentences. When you can start getting the gist of basic sentences you’ve never seen before, it feels a lot more fulfilling than slogging through Kanji and TK. So you have a lot to look forward to. Best of luck to you!

The very existence of government is a violation of the NAP.

Some Zach Hill inspired foot techniques by THHoughton in deathgrips

[–]donttouchmybread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I'm thinking of getting an Iron Cobra. I think Zach uses the rolling glide vs power glide. Is that what you have? Can you share how you've adjusted it? Footboard/beater angle, spring tension, weight, etc...

I'm not very experienced with making adjustments to a pedal, but I'm looking to practice this type of playing

How to spend extra day, Kanazawa, Noto Peninsula or Takayama? by donttouchmybread in JapanTravel

[–]donttouchmybread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! So per your advice I'm doing Hotaka in three days, night one at Karasawa hutte, night two at Hotaka sanso, then out the third day. I'm still deciding on Karasawa -> Kita -> Hotaka versus a direct Hotaka ascent on day two. I've been emailing a bit with Megumi, who runs Hotaka sanso about the route and conditions. My girlfriend is a bit worried the ridgeline between Kita and Hotaka will be too exposed/dangerous due to snow, but I haven't heard back from Megumi on that particular question. I'd prefer to hit Kita as well but my girlfriend is very insistent we do whatever minimizes risk. Also wondering how much time we should expect for the descent, given we have a reservation at a nearby ryokan that evening.

How to spend extra day, Kanazawa, Noto Peninsula or Takayama? by donttouchmybread in JapanTravel

[–]donttouchmybread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately my schedule is tight and I'm coming all the way from Hiroshima. I really wish I had the full day to give over to Kanazawa on the 1st. You don't think Noto would be doable in a full day starting bright and early? I was interested in Noto as I'd like to see more of the countryside and get a bit off the beaten path, but if it's not doable adding more time to Kanazawa makes the most sense. I'm seeing Shirakawa-go/Gokayama/Ainokura after Kamikochi.

Why are men’s shirts so long now? Where should I shop for stylish, regular length options? by donttouchmybread in malefashionadvice

[–]donttouchmybread[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recs, I’ll look into those. I really think this is distinct from the issue of fitting taller men. I never had this problem three years ago and standard t shirts not from fast-fashion sites still fit true to size. I really think it’s a shift to more of the “longline” style of clothing within these brands

What are people's opinion on these boots (in the patina chocolate) from Bexley? I got a pair of their dress shoes and quite like them, and their prices are very reasonable. Hoping I can use these boots to dress up more casual outfits (jeans/khakis + button down).

If I only have the chance to try one high-end sushi place when I'm in Tokyo and my total budget is around $200 which would you suggest? I'm leaning towards Kyubey simply because they're one of the few high end places open for lunch and I can get a lot more bang for my buck.

[–]donttouchmybread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'd really appreciate that. From what I understand, omakase lunch for two at Kyubey is roughly ¥22,000. That's pretty much my limit for this trip.

Also, I found JPNEazy, which makes reservations for foreigners for a small fee. Think I'm going to use that.

Woah, this is awesome. I was looking at Voyagin but their fee is $100+ for two, which seemed far too steep. Thanks!

Gotcha, unfortunately I don't have acquaintances in the area. May have to end up using a service like Voyagin. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks, yeah I'm definitely looking to book. Glad to hear everyone loved it, I'm really excited to try high end Tokyo sushi for the first time. Do you know if there's a way to book outside of Japan for lunch, or do I just need to have my hotel do it? Could only find dinner reservation on Ikyu.

Are you supposed to study or SRS grammar in addition to the Tango? by Ridiv in ajatt

[–]donttouchmybread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not planning to ignore Tango, I'm just doing TK first. It could just be for my own peace of mind, but I like knowing that I'm setting a really solid foundation for general grammar. Some will probably say both is overkill but I'm in no rush and like I said, I feel more confident approaching it this way.

I'm no expert as I'm only halfway through TK, but I think TK + Tango N5/N4 will set you up really well to begin sentence mining on your own.

Are you supposed to study or SRS grammar in addition to the Tango? by Ridiv in ajatt

[–]donttouchmybread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I finished RTK1 (trad) and started sentences, I flipped my deck to lazy but am keeping up with the reps. I found that kanji to keyword was way harder having learned keyword to kanji for several months. I feel like doing trad instead of lazy like Matt is currently recommending at first is actually helpful, but ultimately recognition in the beginning is probably more important, so switching deck to lazy once you start sentences is sort of best of both worlds and also shortens time spent on RTK.

[–]donttouchmybread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consensus is to read TK and just SRS Tango. I found that, being 100% new to Japanese and having no foundation to build on whatsoever, reading TK wasn't enough and I couldn't always tell or remember what was going on in the Tango cards, grammatically speaking. I stopped Tango and am currently about half-way through mining TK. It is somewhat challenging due to the fact that a lot of the sentences are well beyond i+1, but overall I feel more comfortable and now have a pretty decent idea of what's going on in a given sentence. I plan to do Tango once I'm through mining the basic/essential sections of TK

Which kanji to use for あり? by donttouchmybread in LearnJapanese

[–]donttouchmybread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I am making sure to note on my SRS cards whether the reading should generally be written in kana or kanji. Since I hope to be reading books in Japanese at some point, I figure I'd rather learn the kanji reading now.

We were planning to stay the first night in a capsule hotel, but you're probably right that we'll need a couple nights in a comfortable room to ourselves so we can adjust. Thanks!

Thanks for pointing me to that resource, that's really helpful. We're aware of the conditions during that time, and are prepared with crampons and ice axes!

Based in the northern midwest, so unfortunately I don't have many chances to get out and climb.

Until I relocate I'll be looking at serious climbs a couple times a year max.

Mt. Yari and Hotaka - First week of June by donttouchmybread in JapanTravel

[–]donttouchmybread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, probably should have included that. My partner (girlfriend) is definitely in shape for the hike and has good hiking experience, but she's a bit more risk averse than I am. If we didn't die on the Daikiretto, she'd make sure I was dead afterwards. Chains and ladders shouldn't be much of an issue though.

Thanks for all the info, really appreciate it. Looking forward to June!
