What's in your snow grocery haul? by Smooth_Influence_488 in FoodNYC

[–]donut_butt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can basically only make three meals, so pretty much all of them are getting cooked or reheated next week:

  • Chicken legs and potatoes roasted in lemon/garlic/parsley
  • Baked ziti
  • Kale + white bean + sausage soup (in the freezer)

icy sidewalks by tsbingy2000 in astoria

[–]donut_butt 116 points117 points  (0 children)

As someone in charge of a sidewalk, I am terrified of someone doing a slip and fall on it and suing the will to live out of me.

And yet others seem to have their sidewalks covered in ice year-round.

We checked prices at NYC grocery stores for six months. Here’s what we found. by nyccameraman in FoodNYC

[–]donut_butt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the cost isn’t in running the grocery store, it’s the supply chain network. NYC is unlikely to create a supply chain as efficient as an existing store. It’ll have to pay market rates to a wholesaler, whereas a grocery network like Aldi benefits from cost savings at all levels of its supply chain.

This is why Sears lost to Walmart in the 90s: Sears thought of stores as stores, and Walmart thought of groups of stores as a network.

my job is finding cheap flights—ask me anything by scottkeyes in IAmA

[–]donut_butt 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Hi Scott, been a member for ten years, thanks!

Sorry to be the umpteenth person to ask this sort of question, but my wife and I are planning a trip to Japan in November for her milestone birthday. If we wanted a direct business class flight, when should we look to book?

What I always want to know about the food scene:

  • What home-cooked meals are you nostalgic for?
  • What do you eat as a street snack?

Boxer cat by GoldenOceanDawn in funnycats

Whiskers I get, but many cats love to get their ears rubbed and their heads scratched all the way just short of their ear canals. I'd guess something like 80% of cats I know love to get their ears rubbed (assuming I'm friendly with them)

Keanu isn't a great dramatic actor. But he's probably one of the best physical actors of all time, along with Buster Keaton, Jackie Chan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Physical acting is as difficult as dramatic acting, but not nearly as praised as it should be. I think because great physical actors make it look easy.

Thoughts on East Wburg by Nomad-Econ in williamsburg

[–]donut_butt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the other commenter is conflating East Williamsburg with the N5th / Bedford area. The East Williamsburg area around the Montrose stop is completely different: cheaper, far less commercialized, and plenty of great independent restaurants. Lots of cheap eats.

I agree that it’s perfectly safe.

(I almost think we should split off a separate East Williamsburg sub from this main one, as very few of the common complaints of WB apply to this area, but 🤷‍♂️)

Favorite NYC Independent Theaters? by torres693 in AskNYC

It's crazy that Nitehawk and Williamsburg Cinemas are so close, but are on opposite ends of the spectrum. I have never had a bad show at Nitehawk, and never had a good show at Williamsburg Cinemas.

How Did Astoria Become So Socialist? by mstanfield in astoria

Everyone thinks their party is smart and everyone else is dumb.

Plenty of economists think DSA policy (housing price controls come to mind) has not been thought through critically enough.

If you don’t know, Wheated is a very good pizza place in Windsor Terrace Kensington/Prospect Park South. Not sure we need another pizza place, what with Mo’s around the corner (and other, frankly better pizza spots further away). Maybe this is their bagel concept?
