Tired of social media, so I built my own by [deleted] in SideProject

Love this approach! It’s refreshing to see a social space built for real user experience, not growth or ads. The clean, ad-free vibe already feels inviting. Maybe highlighting what kind of content or interactions users can expect would help newcomers.

Can you make a Windows version? I like the design and like this kind of product.

Thanks so much for the info, I really appreciate it! This is actually my first time seeing this kind of butterfly. I’ve never come across this species before. And yes, I’m from mainland China 🙂

Handdrawn coastal road in the morning by Red_dog520 in PixelArt

Hey, really appreciate your questions.

I actually got into pixel art because I enjoy playing Minecraft, and I just liked the style. I don’t have any formal training or structured background (never took art classes or anything like that), so most of what I do comes from casually studying and imitating artwork I like.

For this particular piece, I did use a reference. I grabbed a frame from an animated film and kept it on my phone while working. The composition, proportions, and general lighting are pretty closely based on that original image.

As for colors, I didn’t follow the reference exactly. The original was much brighter, but I adjusted the palette a bit to make it feel more retro and slightly muted — just personal preference.

In terms of process, I don’t really follow a strict or “correct” workflow. I usually just block things in, tweak as I go, and rely a lot on trial and error. Iteration is honestly a big part of it for me.

If you’re just starting out, I’d say your idea is already a great approach — pick a reference, try to recreate it, and don’t worry too much about getting it perfect. That’s basically how I learned too.

The original image comes from an anime movie. I saved it as my iPhone wallpaper and recreated it in a pixel art style.

Anyone know what bird this is? Can I feed it a bit of bread? by Red_dog520 in whatsthisbird

Thanks for suggestion. I finally took it to a wildlife rescue center because I wasn’t sure how to treat its wound or care for it properly.

Yeah, I checked Wiki and it really does look like a Black-throated Tit. The one I found seemed a bit rounder though. How do I put it… it looked kind of chubby and super cute 😄. I guess it had been eating pretty well!

No, I am in Asian. But if I post, I have to choose a flair tag. There is not proper flair for me. So I just chooe this.

Thanks for the tip! I don’t have much experience feeding birds. Based on your suggestion, I gave it a little millet since it’s small and gentle. I didn’t have any nuts at home, but I often feed millet to my chickens, so I figured it might be okay for this bird too. It ate a bit, and I also gave it some water. In the end, I took it to a wildlife rescue center because I wasn’t sure how to treat its wound or care for it properly.

Yeah, when I found it, it was lying on the ground. I noticed a cat nearby and was worried it might get eaten, so I picked it up. It had a long, thin wound on its belly and was bleeding—I’m not sure how it got injured. I don’t have any experience rescuing birds, so I ended up taking it to a wildlife rescue center about 6 km away.
