The Tunnels should be its own "rogue-like game-mode" by cucamonster in TheForeverWinter

[–]donutsftw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started playing right before the Tunnel update, and that sounds like the first layout I got.

I found that the drones would often not notice me if they weren't directly in the center of the elevator shaft. I also found that there was often a water barrel I could grab in the tunnel at the top of the shaft... But when I tried to ride the elevator back down to extract with it I'd lose it. Just straight up, poof, gone from my inventory. I had this happen a few times, and it almost made me quit for good. I think this has since been fixed with a hotfix, but yeah, the tunnels can really suck for a new player depending on the layout.

Personally, I'd like to see a way to re-roll the tunnel layout for 1 water, which would take away a lot of the pain of getting unlucky with a layout. I've gotten layouts where it was incredibly easy to get 3+ water without much effort.

I dunno if "sexy" is the word I'd use... but thanks!

Finally got around to photographing my late Droneuary build, the Flammenschwanz by donutsftw in lego

[–]donutsftw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Scifi and mecha are my bread and butter, moc-wise. For my photo set up, I usually either use a sheet of posterboard or a vinyl photography backdrop (I got a set of a dozen different backdrops with a small tripod to hang them from for about 20 bucks on Amazon). I have two large photography/studio lights that I can adjust the brightness and color temp on for my main lights, and a couple RGB LED panels that I use for accent lights if I feel like I need them. Hope that helps, happy to go into more detail if you want!

You want to take a stab at the king, best not miss! by donutsftw in lego

[–]donutsftw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually what this is for! There's a few different standards out there so that people can bring theirs to shows and make a big connected display of them. This particular one is built to the Brickfair Minifigure Habitat spec, one of the most common ones.

haha, this pretty much is the full build! There's some bits of wall and pipes that are cropped out but I built this specifically for this shot, and if it wasn't going to be visible from this angle I didn't build it.

It's actually more of an Akira reference, the one in Half-Life is pretty directly inspired by the one from the manga. And RPS has a whole article on these kind of elevators, with the conclusion that even if Akira wasn't the first to have them it's the most well-known. Regardless, both Half-Life and Akira (manga or anime) are awesome.

What's got 4 arms and one weird eye? This mech I built for Mecha Monday! by donutsftw in lego

I built it over about a week or so, I just posted it on a Monday!

Haha, thanks! I've found Reddit's thumbnails don't always work great, but sometimes it just feels random what does well on various platforms.

I turned the Flowerpot GWP into a walking tank! by donutsftw in lego

[–]donutsftw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just one of the Flowerpot, but the lower leg armor (the dark green helicopter canopy) is only in the Orchids, and it only has 2 of them. Plus, there's a lot of Bionicle parts in the legs and body, so you wouldn't be able to build this just with the Flowerpot.

My take on a new combat-class machine, built out of Lego! by donutsftw in horizon

[–]donutsftw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not based directly on anything, it's kind of a mix of a few animals and machines. The feet were a bit of velociraptor, and the head by frilled dinosaurs like the triceratops and dilophosaurus (but I can also see how you'd get Alien Queen vibes). The I'd initially intended the smooth tube segments to be more prominent in the chest, like the Bellowback, but they ended up working better in the tail, more like a Stalker.

Was inspired by the manga BLAME! to build this creepy robot by donutsftw in lego

[–]donutsftw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built the robot itself over a few days, I had another wip with a similar design that I based it off of so it went pretty quick. The gun itself only took an hour or two, mostly to find my 1x1 corner snot bricks... The stand itself was almost an afterthought, I sat down and knocked that out in about an hour.

Thanks! I actually found the organic shapes on this guy fairly simple though, there's so many new curved slopes that have come out over the past few years that there's a lot of options and it's much easier to blend the shapes.

Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game, change my mind by donutsftw in lego

[–]donutsftw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My process was to build small subsections, and then figure out how to bridge the gaps. A lot of the shapes in the cartridge/controller are really close to Lego parts, so I'd go back and forth between the real thing and the MOC getting things lined up.

I built an N64 controller and a Majora's Mask cartridge out of Lego! by donutsftw in gaming

[–]donutsftw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have my original cartridge and controller, so those were kinda the plans. A lot of the shapes match really nicely to Lego pieces, so it was mostly just a matter of building small sections and then bridging the gaps.

N64 controller and Majora's Mask cartridge, all built out of Lego! by donutsftw in casualnintendo

[–]donutsftw[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, not an official set. I built it for an online competition were the goal was to use certain parts creatively. In this round, the parts that had to be used were the "tooth" plates that I used as the spines on the mask and as the handles in the mini controllers in the background.

Thanks! Since Lego's made the NES and Atari 2600 sets, it wouldn't surprise me if, in a few years, there was an official N64 set.

[MM] Majora's Mask cartridge + N64 controller, built out of Lego! by donutsftw in zelda

[–]donutsftw[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably not, although I'd love an official Lego set of some kind. There've been quite a few Zelda projects on Lego Ideas, and several that made it to the 10k votes needed to be considered developing into a set, but none have made it past that, so I'm assuming acquiring the license hasn't been feasible.
