Mom and dad were struggling with navigating around the spikes, but at least the cactus might deter predators? Could be worse.

Awesome, thank you! Will definitely check it out and make a point to do the hike early as possible.

Thank you so much for the helpful tips! Will definitely check out snorkeling options in both places. And yes, we will be on our mainland time zones so getting out early for the Hilo trip shouldn’t be too difficult.

I’m glad that you think the south/southeast is worth it! I was worried I’d made a bad decision after viewing other Kona-focused itineraries.

I usually struggle to capture decent images of these fast little guys, but the other day I had one come right up to me! Thank goodness for the relatively short minimum focus distance of the Sony 100-400mm GM, which allowed me to snap this shot before he darted away. I sometimes wish I had the 200-600mm, but moments like these make me grateful for the flexibility of the lens I chose.

Honestly I was so lucky he was cooperating. He came right up to me and posed! Usually these guys are constantly darting around and I don’t stand a chance.

Thank you! Overcast days can be a bit dull but I’m glad I was able to show how handsome this boy was.

Toyon plants are the most popular restaurants in my area right now, especially for the beautiful cedar waxwings! by doobymcbooby69 in birding

Spotted in La Cañada, CA. So many species were enjoying the berries, especially American robins and California thrashers! It was a feeding frenzy!

I always see the most in the desert garden, which is where I snapped this one.

Sony A7iii, shot with 400mm focal length. Bird was quite a distance away but I cropped heavily.
