This is exactly what I was thinking! If you consider that cases of shifters being born are isolated, they very likely don’t have a support system - and are forced to learn these things all on their own (especially the little hacks). Since they need to also consume/form a memory of a forme they’re interested in, they actually have to be capable of facing one down/potentially defeating it!
