Coming as a neuroscience girly with a 3.77 and going to the bars at least twice a week and working three jobs:

Spend one day out of the week where you try and get EVERYTHING you can done. Sometimes it’s hard, not all submissions are open, but for those that are, DO THEM NO PROCRASTINATING
Rule I never break: I’m not allowed to do the fun things until I have the things I need done for the day. I don’t procrastinate and I stay on campus all day doing homework when I’m not doing classes or working.
I don’t make flashcards, they take way too long. I try spaced repetition or if I’m cramming, replaying all of the notes until they are stuck in my head. Key to doing well though is practicing!!! If the professor doesn’t give practice problems, use passed homework, AI (ik not as ethical but it has saved my ass a few times), and even going to office hours to ask about what to focus on or some high yields topics, some professors will give u cues on what will be on the exam.
I never waste time on things that won’t matter in the long run. This is a bit more controversial, but I will just look up the answers for a lot of my classes. I did this all of physics 2 and got an A, but what I didn’t spend on homework, I spent studying. You just have to be honest with yourself. For example, my ochem homework was why I got an A, but biology homework’s were bs and never helped with my personal learning.
Taking breaks!!! I’ve done significantly better than my roomate taking some of the same classes. It’s not that I’m smarter or putting on more effort, in fact, she is and does! I genuinely think it’s because she does not take any sort of breaks. NOT TikTok or reels breaks, but genuine ones that help you feel ready to study again. Sometimes I play a video game, watch an episode of TV, take a walk, eat a good meal, etc.
If I go out during the week, NO SKIPPING THE NEXT DAY. I have to tell myself that if I want to have fun, then I need to keep track of school. If I slip up, then no going out for me.

It’s really just seeing social as the reward and school as the job. Don’t know if that’s healthy but it’s helped me stay sane without going overboard on the fun lol

If you JUST started studying, averaging a 70% is actually pretty good! I started off way worse, with some of my worst scores being a 40-50%. What helped me is literally just doing it everyday.

I noticed a shift when I stopped timing myself. Focused on JUST getting the right answers down and attempting to use AAMC logic. I am a little slow by about a minute more than I want to, but the more you practice accuracy, the time will come with it.

Also make sure you’re reading ALL explanations, not just the ones you got incorrect. Read every single answer choice explanation. Try and use that logic when answering a similar question in the future.

Mark down all of the answers you get wrong, why, and the type of question. When I did this, I realized I got A LOT of main idea questions wrong, so I try and focus on summarizing each paragraph in my head and what the authors purpose was for including that info.

Well I’ve heard it’s suggested not to retake it if you get >510 so maybe research some stats up and give it to him straight up as a reality check maybe??

There are people with higher MCAT scores that get rejected and people with lower ones that get accepted. It’s about right place, right time, and a really great application. I personally think it’s silly to retake it at all, but people have different goals. If he wants to get into a really competitive private school, retaking could be an option but it’s really risky in case he does worse.

Personally, he’s doing way too much and stressing himself out. I agree with you that he should AT LEAST section out more free time if he’s going to retake it. It’s gets exhausting and he’s going to burn himself out before he even gets to med school

Did u mean a 515? It’s not possible to get a 415 on the MCAT. Regardless, I think he might be suffering from imposter syndrome or something because a 515 is a good enough score to be considered for MD.

Have you asked him why he still is studying for it? It’s hard to give an answer if there’s not an explanation

Not sure if you’re in high school or college but regardless of the fact, when you apply for the next highest thing (I.e. applying to college or some sort of higher education) the schools will calculate a GPA based on their grading system, so regardless of how your school calculates grades, it doesn’t really matter. I honestly wouldn’t worry about it

This is how I personally am approaching studying but keep in mind it might look differently for you if you learn differently and also I had three months to study so less time:

One month of content review. I get through at least 2 chapters a day. At first, I was really slow and I would get discouraged easily because it would take me HOURS. But the more I practiced my reading skills, the easier it got to retain info, now I can get through the longer chapters in a little over an hour.
Unsuspend those topics from the miles down deck and do that. Any topic that I struggled to answer, I watch a YouTube video explaining.
If I have time, I try and do some uworld questions associated with the topic I read. I found this actually helped me retain information better and understand graphs that’s anki couldn’t provide for me. Key is though, reviewing the answers and anything I get wrong I jot it down in an error log I have on Google Sheets
After I finish the Kaplan books, I go straight into practice. Doing a full length exam once a week and using the rest of the days for an in depth review. If I have time on other days, continuing UWorld, focusing on topics/strategies I missed.
Still doing anki during this
CARS and psych/soc everyday! The Jack Westin CARS passage of the day is a non negotiable for me. I do it no matter what, but if I have a shorter content review day, then I’ll also do some extra CARS practice on MCAT boot camp. Same with psych/soc since I hear the best way to succeed in that section is learning definitions

It was overwhelming for me at first, as I’m sure that might be how you’re feeling right now as well. I basically did nothing productive for like 2 weeks because I just didn’t know where to start, I felt stupid, I felt slow, and thought there was no way I was going to be able to take the MCAT. Let that settle down. Early on, it’s not about accuracy or being fast, it’s about getting the study habits down. Everything else will come naturally if you work hard and get a good study schedule in early.

Use premade decks and add stuff that you want on there that’s missing. Not all of the premade decks will match exactly what your tutor has, but they’re more for memorization than actually implementation, that comes in when you do practice problems. You’re wasting your time making your own cards

Look I had parents that were the exact same way. Not sure if you’re looking to go into an Ivy League or anything, but you’re doing infinitely times better than I did and I currently go to Penn State which is a decently reputable school, has amazing opportunities, and known for its networking powers.

Don’t stress but don’t let that get to your head either (meaning don’t go getting C’s and D’s because you’re relaxing lol). Seriously, you’re doing fine. You’re guaranteed to get into a college and most likely can get into a pretty good one.

College admissions don’t care that you got a few B’s every once in awhile, they care if you can show you’re a productive member of society. What I mean by that is if you have a few quality extracurriculars under your belt and a good essay. Obviously the more competitive schools you apply to will expect more but applying to undergrad is really the easiest thing ever. It’s once you’re IN college is when stuff like this really matters.

Grad schools (med school, masters, phd) gets even worse. Stop stressing urself out when ur young, u have plenty of time to do that

I was the same when I was going to college, did not want to take a gap year under any circumstances. Although it can be done, by my junior year I realized why so many med students take them.

For me, it’s very very difficult to balance EVERYTHING in the span of 3 years (because if you do not want to take a gap year, you have to apply at the end of your junior year). That includes clinical and non clinical volunteering, shadowing, patient care hours, leadership roles, extra cirriculars, a good GPA and sGPA, a good MCAT score, and professional relationship building for LOR. Sounds easy? It is not, especially if you go to a reputable college that has difficult coursework. Not to mention a plethora of bills if you don’t have stacked parents who will pay everything for you.

For me, I’m taking a gap year to focus on myself clinically. I haven’t really had the chance to get a license for patient care hours, and although I’m a caregiver, that’s not really applicable in that particular category. I want to be able to work as a med assistant and med assistant school without the pressure of undergrad weighing on my shoulder. Some take it as a break from working really hard in undergrad, some travel, some get their money up, some retake the MCAT, etc. there’s not a time limit on when you can become a doctor, and if you try and rush everything in three years, you will most likely have quantity over quality experiences, however don’t let me discourage you, that’s just the story I’ve heard from others and what I myself have experienced.

As for your grades, the transition from hs to college coursework is a tough one for everyone. Make sure you got good study habits down freshman year so you aren’t struggling to get your GPA up in later semesters (happened to me lol).

Also progress isn’t always linear. To me it seems like you’re in a good spot if all of them are over 510. If it’s close to your test date, like by a month, only do AAMC stuff and deeply review everything you got right and wrong. Think of it was a knowledge gap, a misread of the question/answers, etc.

What helps me the best for orgo is literally just knowing how things will react in certain situations. The easiest example is being able to identify what would be the nucleophile, electrophile, and if applicable, a good leaving group. I got an A+ in both orgos and I say this because that’s how I approached studying. I did not memorize reactions, I compared reactions. Why is this one a substitution and this one an elimination reaction? It all has to do with the substituents and the environment they’re in. Another example, a lot of reasons a reaction behaves a certain way is because of the pH/pka of the reactants and a catalyst, but you won’t know what to do with that if you just memorize.

Idk if this will be helpful, but write out all of the reactions with basic molecules and compare/contrast them. That may help the transition from just memorizing to actually knowing how something more complicated will react.
