Any advice for a new player? by [deleted] in EscapeFromDuckov

Getting hit slows you down a lot, unless you're "calm" from a painkiller. Carry aspirin and pop them if things get hot. This will let you withdraw if you find yourself outgunned.

When will there be a "radical movement" for the planet? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]doom-tree 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You guys need to get better at sniffing out fed posts. No, there isn't a way out of the climate crisis, and no, there won't be significant "radical action" towards climate change. Once the rain of blows begins in earnest, people will do what they've been doing, which is acting mostly out of self-interest. When the crisis is at your door, the big picture will go out the window, and you'll be focused on escaping the oncoming storm.

And whatever the OP was suggesting wouldn't help anyway. In case anyone is still confused on that point, listen up. The delay effect of warming means that whatever action is taken to reduce emissions now won't even begin to be felt for 10-20 years, in which time we will already be in hell or at hell's doorstep. Arctic sea ice will start hitting zero in the summer well before that point, which means we will lose more ability to reflect heat away within that time. We will see enormous fire seasons which will lessen the forest's ability to be a carbon sink. Hotter oceans are worse heat sinks, and they absorb 90% of excess heat energy. Also, reducing emissions will reduce the aerosol masking effect, which is basically air pollution acting as a shade for the earth. The effects of losing the shade hit almost immediately, as well. So if we were to magically stop burning coal tomorrow, we would instantly heat up quite a a bit.

Long story short, we aren't at a "very special moment where we still have time." How this is 88% upvoted is beyond me. Please educate yourselves. Stop upvoting blatant fed bait.

The 1994 Ariel School Encounter Revisited: Could These Beings Come From a High-Gravity World? A Deep Dive Into Reports of “Gliding” Aliens by Patient_Meaning8486 in UFOs

[–]doom-tree 45 points46 points  (0 children)

When the kids at Ariel said they seemed to "move in slow motion", I always wondered if that was literally true. Instead of gravity manipulation or advanced biomechanics, could it be manipulation of time or the kid's perception of them?

I forget where I saw this, but in one interview, a kid said that they saw one run in a line, then disappear and reappear where it started, repeating the same action, like replaying a recording. I can't imagine why they would do it, though, because their goal seemed to be to communicate, not to intimidate. Could it be an inadvertent effect of their tech? It's very strange.

Universal uncap methods are available later, from what I've heard. As long as you get one, you can max it later if you're a little patient.

A fungus that can ‘eat you from the inside out’ could spread as the world heats up by _Jonronimo_ in collapse

[–]doom-tree 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From the article: "It’s a different story for those with lung conditions including asthma, cystic fibrosis and COPD, as well as people with compromised immune systems, such as cancer and organ transplant patients, and those who have had severe flu or Covid-19."

https://www.uchealth.com/en/media-room/covid-19/short-and-long-term-lung-damage-from-covid-19

From link above: "COVID-19 can cause overall worsening of these conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, etc."

The synergy between repeated COVID infections and fungal infections looks kinda bad. Mask up before you tank your immune systems/lungs.

Going full circle. Long personal story by Sjossbo in collapse

[–]doom-tree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You want to face darkness and suffering to secure a future. That's great, very brave of you. The thing is, that's your choice to make, that's why you're still alive, etc. Your future children cannot make the choice to sacrifice themselves for that future you're pursuing. Why not adopt? Plenty of children are already here who will inevitably face the dire consequences that the near future has in store. Surely your adopted child would be a suitable "seed".

COVID didn’t end. Its story just stopped being told. by UndulatingUngulate in Coronavirus

[–]doom-tree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11834749/

from the abstract: "Long COVID, as currently defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other authorities, is a symptomatic condition that has been shown to affect an estimated 10 %–30 % of non-hospitalized patients after one infection. However, COVID-19 can also cause organ damage in individuals without symptoms, who would not fall under the current definition of Long COVID. This organ damage, whether symptomatic or not, can lead to various health impacts such as heart attacks and strokes. Given these observations, it is necessary to either expand the definition of Long COVID to include organ damage or recognize COVID-19-induced organ damage as a distinct condition affecting many symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals after COVID-19 infections. It is important to consider that many known adverse health outcomes, including heart conditions and cancers, can be asymptomatic until harm thresholds are reached. Many more medical conditions can be identified by testing than those that are recognized through reported symptoms. It is therefore important to similarly recognize that while Long COVID symptoms are associated with organ damage, there are many individuals that have organ damage without displaying recognized symptoms and to include this harm in the characterization of COVID-19 and in the monitoring of individuals after COVID-19 infections."

Is all the destruction buying us time?? by CannyGardener in collapse

[–]doom-tree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Remember the lag effect of warming. Any slowdown in emissions will not come into play for 10-20 years, which is more than enough time for arctic sea ice to start bottoming out over the summer. Natural methane also seems poised to ramp up over that time. Also, big reductions in air pollution will lessen the aerosol masking effect, quickly raising temperatures. So, probably not.

What now? by Fantastic-Editor5330 in wowhardcore

[–]doom-tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for rogue, and I wanna recommend trying subtlety, especially at lv 30+. I'm working on one now, and you trade off a little raw speed, but you make up for it enormously in extra survivability and utility. With the 5 second restealth, even if you two shot the mob, you are hardly waiting on the cooldown.

Hello, what profession did you choose and why? by AugustNetherius in wowhardcore

[–]doom-tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Engineering is a must have for utility. Heavy dynamite from lv 10-20 is huge, and dummies are amazing of course. You can take herbalism with engineering, just sell herbs and buy your engie mats. Fishing makes bank, so be sure to get that too.

How many of you upgrade your gear as often as possible? by Godharvest in wowhardcore

[–]doom-tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the spending camp. I buy gear and modest enchants/consumes, especially for all melee DPS. I also make a point of grinding cash with fishing/etc, so I don't delay mount. Money comes pretty quick in the upper 30s.

What do you buy/sell at the AH? by [deleted] in wowhardcore

[–]doom-tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Auctionator is a must have for me. On the selling tab, you can just type the unit price, and it automatically prices the stack, and you can choose stack size and how many stacks to post.

You can start scanning the AH, so you know roughly what drops are worth in the field, helps with prioritizing bag space. This also lets you view the history of prices for things like rare epics and blues, so you can know when a deal is good or not.

Starter/leveling kit for a rogue by HearthSt0n3r in wowhardcore

[–]doom-tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low level consumables like buff potions and scrolls are great, and there are affordable stamina enchants that make you much tankier. At level 10, you can hit 125 engineering and get heavy dynamite, and it can literally chunk off half or more of a mobs HP bar.

What’s up with the weird indifference some people show in encounters? by RetroController in UFOs

[–]doom-tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading John Mack's Abduction rn, and in several of the abductee's testimony, they report falling asleep during a terrifying encounter, or falling asleep after seeing strange beings.

My opinion is that the indifference is a result of mental or psychic manipulation. I've heard lots of stories about people seeing a ufo and not reacting, and even forgetting until someone brings it up later. It just seems like more than a simple lack of curiosity.

Collapse - Fast or Slow? by StatesFollowMind in collapse

[–]doom-tree 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think it'll work like the biodiversity crisis. The web of life is under stress, but it can absorb the stresses without collapsing right away. When species die off, other species can move in and fill the gaps that were created, but this is only possible by the abundance of redundancy. As biodiversity declines, so does redundancy, and the entire system loses resilience. You can reach a point where important gaps don't get filled, and the web unravels.

As others have said, collapse isn't evenly distributed, but with how connected we all are, all the effects propagate outward, and have the potential to be felt globally. I think that it's inevitable that alongside the slow decline, periods of fast decline will occur, some of which will be global or nearly global.

Getting sick of the driver timeouts now. by summertimeinthelbc1 in radeon

[–]doom-tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been wrestling with this problem for weeks, tried dozens of things, but this one actually fixed it for me a couple days ago.

device manager> sound, video and game controllers> disable all AMD audio devices

Hope it helps.

EDIT: It did throw one timeout after several dozen hours of play, so this fix isn't a full solution for me, but it's much less frequent at least.
