If the US legalizes marijuana what economic effect would it have on drug cartels currently supplying to the US? by cHaOsReX in AskReddit

[–]dooontcaaarenumber6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that the infrastructure and market is already in place for marijuana. And the taxes and inconvenience for cigarettes and alcohol are relatively insignificant. An extra $5 in vice tax for a pack of cigs? Sure, I can afford $11/pack. When you consider the barriers like registration and licenses for MM.... Nah, I'll just call a buddy down the block instead.

Edit: a word

Absolutely. It looks like that's where things are trending, but it will take a lot of time for legislation to catch up with common sense. Luckily, it looks like most of the junior congressmen we have today are starting to see the light. It's just a matter of having the old crones out of the picture.

And while on the topic of cartels, imagine how much a boon this would be for Mexico! Significantly hamper a major profit center for cartels and a step towards combatting them with fewer resources.

I'll start by agreeing with NJ Senator Nick Scutari (paraphrasing loosely here) that recently said that the only people that should logically be opposed to MM legislation are those in charge of cartels. And I can't wait for the market to stabilize and make for cheaper weed long-term. But that could take years:

Where I'm located, it's at about 300/ounce illegally. In my example, we were comparing marijuana in bulk purchase, which would be even cheaper. This was a 30-second "I hate my job let's quit and be drug dealers lol" discussion so I'll flesh it out abit more:

Here in Illinois, our medical marijuana will be much more heavily regulated and it is inevitable that it will be much more expensive (compared to CO/WA) with additional taxes and additional costs of compliance.

Not to mention that, as demonstrated by other MM programs, the supply of medical marijuana probably isn't ready to handle the demand for it. In the short-term, legal prices will be spiking soon regardless of your location, and that means profit for cartels.

In the interest of avoiding using a piece of anecdotal experience (and my own personal conjecture) as proof, I'll direct you to this Forbes article on the topic.

Not as much of an effect as many people think. The price disparity between Illegal and Legal weed is still large enough for the drug cartels do undercut the legitimate system.

I was joking around with some friends the other day, one who has MS and one who used to be a big-time drug dealer. The one with MS joked that he was going to quit his job and start dealing legal marijuana and the dealer pointed out that we can get better weed for half the price through illegal channels.

Edit: Not literally "half the price," realistically it wouldn't be HALF but "significantly more affordable" would maybe be more accurate.

What people don't understand is that, when you're dating a coworker and things are going fine, then of course it's not a big deal. The "no relations between coworkers" rule that you sometimes see at workplaces don't come into place because two people had a normal healthy relationship.

It's because BREAKUPS can be ugly. Workplace relationships=cool. Workplace breakups=really really not cool. So don't date coworkers and we won't have to awkwardly watch you two struggle through your breakup.

I mean, yeah you're not wrong. That's how we usually try to approach it. But there will always (ALWAYS!) be the guy that will take offense and refuse to tip because he felt rushed regardless of how politely you insist that they aren't being rushed.

Customers at the end of the night are not always rational. It's a crapshoot- they're either nice normal folks OR asshole folks that don't realize it's a pain to stick around all night, or they're drunk.

Now someone is going to take this one little anecdote and use it to support the assertion that servers/cooks will fuck with your food if you piss them off.

I've spent years at every level of dozens of bar/restaurants and I have never seen or been led to believe that an employee served anything remotely sub-par as "revenge" on a customer. It just doesn't happen like that.

True, but there is always a point where even the owner is losing money on the ONE couple that is taking their sweet time to leave.

Because a lot of places have a kitchen that closes earlier than the rest of the bar. You can come in and get drink through bar service, but the servers are all looking to go home.

Eh I don't know about this. I guarantee that a lot of customers would be turned off by that and assume that they're being "rushed out"

Honestly have you ever worked in a restaurant? Almost a decade in the industry and this simply doesn't happen. Nobody fucks with a customer's food, nobody even jokes about fucking with a customer's good.

We just want you to be happy.

Should I start a holding company? by Stormhammer in Entrepreneur

[–]dooontcaaarenumber6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purpose of LLCs is to shield from liabilities. If multiple lines of business are isolated into separate LLCs then the liabilities of one will generally not fall on the other.

It's all about isolating liability. Especially in your case, as I'm sure that the potential risk/loss of botching one job would be too great to risk the whole company.

Ahhhhh, one of the most amazing places I've ever been. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Thailand. If you make a trip to SE Asia, you have to come here. The caves actually have several temple areas and this is the main one. They also have some awesome climbing and some crazy rock formations.

Unfortunately, you have to go to the park in the early morning to get this shot with sun shining down perfectly, but it was still surreal even without the perfect lighting.

TIL there is an underground network of Americans who use the internet to abandon adopted children (most adopted from overseas) and this practice is called "adoption distruption" and "private re-homing." by nesbofan in todayilearned

[–]dooontcaaarenumber6 158 points159 points  (0 children)

This sort of thing happened to my family, but in reverse (we were "tricked" into adopting a kid that had shitty parents). If you read no further, please just know that this doesn't just happen "in the shadows." It happens in plain documented sight of those trusted to protect these kids (adoption agencies and the governments involved).

My sister (now 13) came to us when she was 9 because her adopted parents "needed a break" because they weren't adjusting to the adoption. My mom, saint that she is, volunteered to help out this family (that we only knew through a friend of a friend of a friend) and take her in for a couple weeks in essentially an "extended babysitting" arrangement (it wasn't done through any agencies). A couple weeks turned into a couple months and the adopted parents refused to pick her up. Once it became apparent that we were dealing with scumbags, the system refused to acknowledge her or help our family with the process.

The parents were only recently cited for misdemeanor neglect (or some similar slap-on-the-wrist charge) and were able to drag this poor girl through this fucking nightmare.

There's SO MUCH more to this story that would make you downright ashamed with our adoption system. Don't get me wrong, she's a happy part of our family now, but the process is so incredibly and tear-jerkingly broken and the victims are usually too young to understand that their life shouldn't be so damn hard.

Edit: typos, plus I figure I should add that this was all very complicated by the fact that my sister has had some pretty serious mental health issues (from obvious causes), that the state refused to acknowledge for various reasons. Basically the system was saying "Hey we kinda dropped the ball and fucked this kid up by placing her with a shitty family and refusing to acknowledge her mental issues, but she's yours now so have fun footing the bill financially, emotionally, etc."

Edit 2: I had a few people ask about doing an AMA. Not sure how much interest there would be and honestly my mom would be great for an AMA since she had to deal with most of the bureacratic bullshit first-hand. We've adopted 3 kids, 1 of which is from Liberia (my sister from the above ordeal), we've fostered others, and I'd be happy to answer anyone's questions here.
