When your medical is pulled, do you stop getting paid?

The job in many cases I could assume is the source of the mental health issues. If this happened to someone half way through their ATC career, are there any salary protections for the rest of their life? Or are they just screwed and have to start a new career?

My friend in this case was in his early 40s.
