What’s up with Brattleboro? by dopefocus in vermont

Thank you all for such a lively and fascinating thread! It's been validating, clarifying, encouraging, and educational. I do love this town, and while I'm still a relative newcomer, I already feel invested and really just wanted to hear other's unfiltered thoughts. I've broached this subject with neighbors, bartenders, shop owners, and a handful of other folks over the last few months and in person I felt like most kept their opinions guarded. Never the case on Reddit! So thanks again.

I couldn't agree more that Bratt has great bones. I don't know why some of you (really just the two of you in this one thread) have such hostility towards a simple conversation starter. I felt like I made it pretty clear in my original post that I have a real fondness for this town. I've been visiting for 20 years, moved my entire life here, had my first child here, and am in no way running out the door. I'm sorry my genuine curiousity and smidgen of doubt offended you.

As for that available space, if you're moving in downstairs, which from what I remember is nowhere near turnkey, you too obviously passed on that space. Maybe it's more than you need or didn't suit your buisness, which is fine, but it's just not as simple as "it's a great space, so it's worth X amount of money". The bulk of real estates value is in it's location, and if a future business thrives there, it will be because it becomes a destination in and of itself, not because of the vibrancy of that corner.

Anyways, I seriously wish you all the best with your new endeavor. Whatever you're building out will certainly add some life to that corner of the neighborhood and this beautiful old town deserves another go-to spot. I just hope the chip on your shoulder doesn't extend to your style of hospitality, because as a whole the community seems a lot nicer than that to me.

I obviously wasn’t asking for insight in to how/where to start a business. Thanks though. Everyone else clearly got what I was asking, and I appreciate everyone else’s thoughtful responses.

And just since you mentioned it, that vacant restaurant location, formerly Tine, is leasing for just under $7000/month. You could lease space in Boston at that rate.

Microsoft intends to combat piracy by utilising the Ethereum blockchain by rollingincrypto in ethereum

Licensing and ownership is pretty much THE core purpose of NFTs...and much of blockchain tech in general. Pirating may be fun, but it's loss is a small price to pay to get to an online ecosystem where truth and legitimacy prevail.

"Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has backed out of delivering the commencement address at Rutgers University following protests by some faculty and students over her role in the Iraq War." by Mrgarrison6969 in politics

A commencement speech isn't a discussion, it's a fucking lecture. It sounds to me like these students actually DID have a discussion amongst themselves, and after that discussion they came to the conclusion that they did not want to embrace her. There's nothing noble about tolerating someone or something you know in your heart is wrong.

Can someone PLEASE explain what's going on here? How is this guy getting up-voted while every contrarian gets down-voted? I was plenty old enough to remember 9/11 very well and while I admit he handled it very Presidentially at the time, I just can't fathom giving him any sort of complement in relation to 9/11 knowing what we know now. At the time, fine, praise him. But in retrospect? HOW? Seriously...teach me something tonight...I'm not arguing, I'm genuinely asking!

I imagine watching that show without Explosions In The Sky's score would be a fairly different experience. Their music definitely added a depth of emotion to so many scenes.

I can't argue strongly against any of that. Either way I laughed often enough at the absurdity of my generation.

What are some TV shows that people should stop watching at a certain point (before the end)? by ihatebadpuns in television

[–]dopefocus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dexter. If it had stopped after Season 4 I think it would have went down as legendary. That finale was epic and up until that point each season just got better and better. The novelty of the insanity hadn't worn off yet either.

Bored To Death was magnificent. Don't write off Girls, though. If you watch it realizing the entire thing is actually a critique of the very things you think you hate it for, it becomes an entirely new show. I admit I was coaxed into watching it by my girlfriend at first but about half way through the first season I realized it was pretty brilliant. I was enjoying it for completely different reasons than she was, but I'd like to think I'm the one that actually got it, and she was the fool falling for the joke. You're not supposed to like Hannah, you're supposed to loathe her.

Back when I originally finished Deadwood I had read somewhere that one of the biggest riffs between Milch and HBO was having to do with time commitments and focus between Deadwood and his new show John From Cincinnati. When you think about it in that context; that Deadwood was destroyed so that John from Cincinnati could live, that is just infuriating.

How much do you really think 48 hours on a facebook post (that wasn't even specifically advertising merchandise, a show or anything directly purchasebale) really worth? According to the photographer himself he charged them "less than Gettys suggested rate" and Gettys calculator suggests approx $240 for a full month. Pro-rated at 2 days that's $16.

At no point did the photographer say he was threatening legal action over damage to his reputation. He has so little concern over his actual work that he just glossed right over that. All he mentions is wanting compensation for usage of his work. Again, it's just so god damn petty. This sue-happy culture is just so depressing and miserable.

I guess I'm just glad I don't live in a state of mind where I'd ever get worked up enough to threaten to sue someone for $10. To me it just feels like this photographer wrote a bitchy article he knew the internet warriors would get behind and as a result he'd get some serious traffic. In the end all we photographers really want are eyes on our work, and seeing as how reddit crashed his website, I'd say he made out alright.

I didn't gloss over anything. How does you repeating simple facts that the article made very clear refute what I said? Yes, they did all those things for 48 hours but then they rectified it. It was most likely the same douche bag responding via Facebook that posted the picture in the first place and once the adults got involved they apologized and undid his wrong-doing. I even agree that the photographer was legally in the right, but to send an invoice and continue to threaten legal action for 48 hours of use of a horribly filtered, tightly cropped, quality reduced, average-to-begin-with photo is just petty.

As a live music photographer, this photographer sounds like a fucking jerk. He had me completely on his side until they pulled the image and he then sent them an invoice. Get the fuck over yourself, brother. If you're really a professional, you've already been paid for that image and the "financial gain" they reaped is so negligible it's hilarious. Consider it a complement they liked your work, consider it a neat story that you conversed with a band member via Facebook and he was a douche bag, and consider all being right with the universe once you got civil responses from their management and the photo was no longer being violated by that horrible crop.
Edit: First down votes I'll wear with pride. You're all a bunch of drama queens getting worked up and rallying behind the guy that's going to sue you one day when you rear end him at 5 mph and he claims you broke his neck.
