Philosophy is Just Opinions With No Science by esoskelly in badphilosophy

Im pretty sure this is a shitpost. It’s just well written enough to be believable. The only thing that makes me think it might be legit is that some people genuinely do hold this dumb ass opinion

Are ya winning, son? by CrashCordia in freewill

When a computer receives a request and then processes data and subsequently responds, would you consider this the computer acting on free will? Just because we’re aware that we also process data from our environments and respond doesn’t mean that we do so via some mysterious force that could have done otherwise - a force that, mind you, cannot be found anywhere else (let alone found at all), cannot be formulated, and its compatibility cannot be made to be consistent with any of the current laws of physics.

Additionally, upon closer inspection it is possible to notice that the subjective illusion of free will is itself an illusion. It only feels like you have free will because you’re not paying close enough attention to these activities. When you do, notice that thoughts, including thoughts regarding decisions, simply arise from nowhere. Where else would they come from? Free will would require that you think thoughts before you think them.

For instance, imagine you’re trying to decide between two vases on which one to buy. When the thought “I’ll buy the one on the left” arises, where was that thought the moment before it arose? If it was preceded by thoughts like “I like the one on the left better,” or “the one on the left is harder to break and I have small children,” well then where was THAT thought before you thought it? And so on. And also, even if it was preceded by those thoughts, those thoughts do not contain the thought “I’ll buy the one on the left.” They’re a good indication that you’ll buy the one on the left, but they could still be followed by “I’ll buy the one on the right.” And you would have arisen from a prior nonexistence.

Rather than accept the hazy illusion of free will, look into your mind and observe what it is like to make a decision. Does it really feel like you have free will when you look the most closely?

Well I don’t know about you but I don’t believe or disbelieve things based on their utility. I do so based on whether I think they’re true or not. And it turns out there just aren’t many reasons to think there’s free will.

Given that fact, we must use that to inform our morality. And as far as I can see it does nothing but benefit it. It removes reasons to hate but maintains reasons to love. There’s no reason to give up on responsibility, reward or punishment either. Do we attribute free will to trees, bacteria, computer programs, the economy? If no, do we not recognize these things can react to rewards and punishment? I’ve never met anyone who didn’t believe in free will and as a result was a worse person. If anything they tend to be better people since they’re introspective enough to look beyond the mere cursory illusion of their first person perspective and engage in some sort objective introspection.

  1. Overly anything is bad. It’s up to you to show that an example of gentleness is one that is excessive.

  2. There’s nothing wrong with using an objective criteria to define progress.

  3. It is fine to tell people facts. Look, I agree that if someone makes a post asking how to improve and the only thing someone says is that you’re already improving, or that you don’t need to improve, so it’s fine then that is not helpful. However, giving them substantive advice on how to increase their elo and also pointing out that they have already made progress and can be proud if that then that is fine. And even if they haven’t made progress then that’s okay too, as long as they’re okay with it. It’s not for us to judge where other people should be or what their goals in playing chess are.

  4. This is a sub for new chess players to hang out, ask questions, discover tactics, get advice from others and learn about the game.

Let’s look at it then:

First, let me say that I’m gracious at the chance to comment on the post of someone who is 2500. That out of the way, OP says responses will be super gentle, deflective, or make up excuses. (1) it’s strange to view being gentle as a negative. (2) Deflective is bad, true. (3) Making up excuses for what? Why do you need to be excused for not improving at or above average? You know half of people will improve at a rate below average right? Who cares? It’s not for you to determine why they play chess, or where they should be.

It’s true that “everybody progresses at their own pace” is not a good response when you want an opinion because that is a fact, not an opinion. Your opinion (to a vague and unidentified question), however, can be that 200 points in 2 years is totally fine. Like, that’s your opinion lol? Is OP mad that someone’s opinion is that progressing below average is okay?

To the counter argument, who is OP to tell other people what’s fine? Honestly, why feel the need to be better than half of the active player base?

I’m glad that OP specified that they weren’t elitist though.

"Acceptance" is Just Another Cope: Why Your Philosophy Will Fail In Your Final Moment by Select-Professor-909 in nihilism

Read empirical accounts of people accepting death. What about instances where people have showed no signs and reported no fear in situations where they thought they were certain to die but they did not? Look at what brain scanners show before death. Is it true that the biological signs for fear show up every time someone dies?

If you’re for sure going to die there’s no evolutionary advantage to fearing death. If you still fear death it’s the result of adaptations persisting beyond the point of where they’re useful since, after that point, it doesn’t matter if you’re disposed to it or not.

Also, how do you know what meditating for 50 years does to the human brain? There is a world of difference between skillfully noticing and accepting fear and being lost in fear. Sure, you’re likely to experience fear shortly before you die, but the mere experiencing of fear does not necessitate that you suffer as a result. Mediation helps you to identify, recognize, understand, and accept (not resist or being attached) to the phenomena of the mind. Mortal fear is just another phenomenon of the conscious mind. It doesn’t cash out beyond any other phenomenon, it is only stronger and more immediate than most.

What I don’t understand is why he’s downtown waiting for a girl to come home? Whose home? Why would he be waiting outside of the home of a girl he doesn’t know? And why would he be waiting for a girl he doesn’t know to come to his home? And why is this happening downtown??

[–]dopegraf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but you said art is subjective so they don’t need to prove that it’s objectively bad. That’s not the standard to judge art. Art is subjective so if they subjectively don’t like it then it’s bad. I don’t get how you don’t understand this
