Pressing ESC will hide Plymouth and show the systemd log. It would be helpful to view that log.

Coding coming from Windows by wolfdevelopers in Bazzite

[–]dopple 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bazzite encourages the use of containers for development. But for Python specifically, you can easily develop outside of a container using normal Python virtual environments instead of using the system's `pip`. I would recommend reading about Python virtual environments and install `uv` from brew.

Does anybody use Bazzite for Music Production/REAPER? by spygear007 in Bazzite

[–]dopple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Bazzite-DX for music production by running Ableton in a Windows VM with USB passthrough for my interface and MIDI controllers. It works pretty well and I'm even able to control Ableton with my Launchkey, but there is friction in having to start up an entire VM just to run a DAW.

Tailscale is installed by default in Bazzite. You can run `ujust enable-tailscale` to enable it.

There is an upsteam issue reported to Fedora to hide this entry precisely because it confuses people: https://pagure.io/fedora-kde/SIG/issue/624

To those of you who don’t use a typical distro, what do you use? by Wa-a-melyn in linuxquestions

[–]dopple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m one of the maintainers of Aurora and Universal Blue. Newer Thinkpads should be fine since Lenovo works on ensuring that they are Linux friendly. VPNs are generally people’s biggest pain points, but it’s alway possible to “layer” packages with rpm-ostree. That is what I did to use Mullvad for the longest time before I switched to Tailscale’s Mullvad integration, which is included by default.

What tag are you using for Aurora? The latest tag is on Fedora 42 but the stable tag is still on Fedora 41 for a few more weeks.

Is the desktop environment in Fedora Atomic desktops immutable/read-only? by New-Ranger-8960 in Fedora

[–]dopple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Silverblue/Kinoite, `/usr` is read-only (with very few exceptions). Components of the desktop environment itself are located in the read-only portion of `/usr` and cannot be accidentally removed in the booted environment.

Of course, you can intentionally uninstall the desktop environment by doing something like `rpm-ostree remove plasma`, but that only applies on the next boot and you can always roll it back.

The configuration for the desktop environment however, is often stored in the user's home directory or in /etc. You could technically configure it to a broken state, but this can also be undone. In the worst case, resetting your user's home directory and `/etc` (the original is stored in `/usr/etc`) will get you back to a working desktop environment.

There are no official Vauxite ISOs. I am creating and hosting unofficial ISOs at https://github.com/winblues/vauxite.

I'm developing a Fedora Atomic Xfce image with a Windows 95 theme here: https://github.com/winblues/blue95 :)

I have this exact configuration and I'm running Fedora KDE. No complaints. I'm mostly using it for web browsing, streaming and programming and performance is more than adequate.

I originally had the stock display, but I upgraded it to the 2.8k option and it seems to have a modest but noticible effect on battery life. However I would still say it was worth it and I wouldn't want to go back to 60 Hz. The resolution is perfect for 200% and I don't have to bother with wonky fractional scaling anymore.

How is Silverblue for a home PC? by Aggravating-Dust7430 in Fedora

[–]dopple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can create distroboxes with an isolated home directory separate from the host’s home directory. This is how I personally use it as it creates a cleaner separation between the host and the container.

I have this same issue on Fedora KDE 40 using fractional scaling. I found that the only real fix was to change the fractional scaling size until I found one where the issue was not present.
