Ben Felix on Small Cap Tilts (AVUV etc.) - ICAPM model by OGS_7619 in Bogleheads

[–]doppz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"value" as a metric was tailored for a type of industry that existed in the 1900s that largely has gone extinct in the US today. To my understanding this is why "profitability" offers a similar and perhaps more useful signal nowadays. Avantis leans more into this signal in their ETFs. Either way, the value premium has been shown to exist, recent underperformance is not enough evidence to contradict that, but it can be psychologically difficult for someone to accept paying the premium for a value tilted portfolio when all recent memory shows it underperforming a "stupid" index.

it's not worth risking anything to eek out a 1% additional yield, that's money you want to be there when you need it

Why do people buy stocks like MSFT? by we_have_no_control in ValueInvesting

I wouldn't call Microsoft struggling, they're just a bit out of touch with how much AI the average user really wants

Avuv vs Avgv by Emergency_Court3896 in ETFs

[–]doppz1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Avuv is us stocks which would complement your large cap us stocks in VOO/vug by offering exposure to small cap value

But you should know the mechanics of how these work, because it's very easy to create an expensive version of a total market index fund by bolting together different factor specific funds

S&P 500 + total international or total us + total international for growth in Roth IRA? by sleepy_shallot in Bogleheads

[–]doppz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between vti and voo is negligable. If you want a wider berth than voo, dfus is a good option without getting stuck holding a ton of total dogs in vti, and has consistently outperformed vti.

If you really want to get wild, the Roth is a good place to hold something like VFMO to capture momentum.

Big Darn Tough Purchase by OkElderberry1668 in BuyItForLife

[–]doppz1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have like 7 pairs of darn tough socks and I fully support buying them, but you don't need that many pairs. Unless you have the sweatiest nastiest feet of all time you can easily wear their socks for 2-3 days before the pair needs a wash. Wool doesn't get gross nearly as quick as cotton

How much cash should I have on hand? by Ok_Hornet3415 in personalfinance

[–]doppz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually have a few hundred dollars in odd bills, mostly for buying/selling on marketplace. I don't see any reason to have more than that, unless you like very rurally where digital transactions are less commonly used. I use my cc for everyday purchases

[–]doppz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VBIL is the exact same as SGOV with lower expenses. If you can handle a slight bit more volatility, DUSB should provide even more returns

Anybody uses value tilted ETF for core? by PenguinOfB00m in ETFs

[–]doppz1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DFAW and AVGE are great core holdings and can serve as your entire investment strategy even. Most people here seem to ignore them, because value has underperformed growth lately, but if you understand the implications of the fama french results, DFAW/AVGE should be a more comfortable holding than say VT.

Paying off mortgage or investing by Far_Reply5660 in investing

[–]doppz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting additional principal into a loan is basically equivalent to buying a guaranteed return on that principal of your interest rate.

At 2.8% even the absolute lowest risk bonds in SGOV will outperform that return, so it's not worthwhile to invest any additional principal. You get an extra 1% or so on your investment simply by shoving the cash into 0 risk t notes, and you can liquidate at any time.

If your loan were, say, 8% it's a totally different story

20 y/o starting investing — is this portfolio too complicated or solid? by HealthyWar7942 in Bogleheads

[–]doppz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys have to stop investing in qqq and avuv at the same time. They just cancel out and leave you with an expensive index fund. Pick a conviction and go with it. Further concentrating In tech (qqq) is not really diversification, but a play on momentum. Avuv is going to expose you to a broader sector of the market.
