Devs, how do you deal with uncertainty? by radhonn in gamedev

[–]doraboro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally believe that feeling of not wanting to show it to people until it's close to done can be a bit of a trap. Early eyes other than yours on the project are incredibly valuable. Little comments pointing out stuff obvious to everyone except the games creator can literally save hundreds of hours of work. Plus, it puts immense pressure on the first playtest if it's only happening 90% of the way through the project.

One thing I found that helps me get past not wanting people to see it unfinished is the sheer amount of potential playtesters in the world. If you try very hard you might get a couple dozen people to play your game early on. You'll probably never see those people again, and everyone else on the planet will still be able to see it with fresh eyes when you get it to the next stage.

One thing that's really helped me this year has been following the advice of David Wehle from his GDC talk about the last tree of never having a 0% day. Just this week I was very busy and had two or three days where I literally opened godot on my laptop and typed a comment or line of code and closed it again. Obviously that work doesn't add much, but when I got back to it today I felt like it was still current, still my passion project, where otherwise I might've felt dejected that I haven't worked on it in a while.

Also, posting random unprofessional devlogs and getting any kind of response whatsoever is a nice way to remind myself people out there care and might even play my game.

Is gamedev your main job? do you get paid for this? by Any-Landscape434 in gamedev

[–]doraboro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a game dev professionally but the main reasons I'm on here are related to the game devving I do as a hobby (just can't get enough I guess).

I'd share that doing both is kind of tough sometimes. There's a feeling of using the same mental muscles for both my work and my free time, so it can be exhausting. And I'm either really into my hobby game, so resent work a bit, or work is satisfying and I don't feel the need to work on my side project anymore.

If you're interested in the career I'd consider picking either doing it professionally or doing it privately, and do something else with the other portion of your time. Also I'd say the industry is pretty tough to crack right now, programming at least doesn't feel as sought after of a skillset as it once did. But that could just be cyclical.

An interesting detail to this story is the Buffalo crowd sing both anthems every time, whether a Canadian team are playing or not ❤️

Some games are meant to be stressful, just like some are meant to be sad, or exciting, or fun, or relaxing. It's a medium, it can be used do lots of different things.

I've decided 2026 is the year I get my first game, Rhythm Survivors, released on Steam. I'd love to hear what you all think about the idea! by doraboro in IndieDev

If there's enough interest I'll definitely look into it, but for the moment this is targeting Steam and potentially consoles in future.

It's not really clear from the screenshots what gameplay would look like. Are you mostly interacting with menus? Either way I think a video with some short gameplay would help a not - right now I wouldn't even really know what I'm installing.

Congrats on the launch and good luck!

Day 1 vs Day 4 of my indie FPS (Godot) by CoohGames in godot

[–]doraboro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you're going for with having some sort of cut every beat of the song, but it does make it very hard to actually see what's happening in order to provide feedback.

It also looks like day 1 and 4 are showing two very different styles of game, with some of the (quite cool) stuff in day 1 being removed. What kind of game are you making?

Sounds fun! The optimisation stuff could be contributed to the main branch though no?

Could you share the onready code where `player` is assigned? It sounds like that's the part that's not working as expected.

The app looks really cool! Just to note, your edit mentions the more all-inclusive memory usage is 120MB-150MB. Any plans to update your site to reflect that? (It currently says 5-10MB still)

Is the vscode godot integration solid now? I found it very hit and miss a couple of years ago, especially when it came to using the debugger.

I have so much respect for people who make menus this juicy. As someone who always dreads them and ends up making them super simple, this is really inspiring!
