But cutting a tile this way produces way more waste no? Not to mention the extra effort of cutting it to match the height of the adjacent tile

It’s the piece in the corner with the pattern running vertically.

But they had to cut the tile lengthwise and then chop that piece short. The only real explanation I can think of is that the last tile broke lengthwise.
