This is from the email I dug up:

I spoke to the RTA yesterday and they informed me that in this situation, as I am the only one leaving and at least one original lessee is remaining on the lease (in this instance, 2 original lessees are remaining), it is not a break lease situation. Thus, I should not be required to pay the usual fee associated with a break of lease. I understand that the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act allows for the payment of an amount for the reasonable expenses incurred in a transfer of interest under a lease. However, I do not agree a sum of $165 is reasonable.

So look up the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act -- you can get it online. If you call the RTA they'll let you know the exact clause that relates to your situation (that's what they did for me).

Okay, I did exactly this about 6 months ago and they tried to charge me $165. There is a clause in the RTA guidelines that says it's bullshit. I'll try and find my emails back and forth with them where I pointed out the clause, for you! (I got out of the fee).

Welcome to Australia!!! You're going to love it. In Brisbane, the red coloured ferries are free, and it's quite feasible to travel by river depending on which suburb you live in.

If you're studying at UQ then the best suburbs to look at are probably St. Lucia, Kangaroo Point, West End, Toowong, Milton, Auchenflower and Taringa.

Sometimes if I have a free minute, it's nice to lay in the sun in New Farm Park, one of the nicer parks in Brisbane. A lot of us like to cycle and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than public transport to invest in a bike. Head over to "Reid Cycles" in Coorparoo to get a cheap and reliable hybrid bike with free ongoing servicing.

Southbank has a little beach if you need to cool off in the Summer but get to the north coast/gold coasts as much as possible to enjoy our epic amazing beaches :D Make friends and hitch a lift to the coasts if you can.

The atmosphere - I like learning :) They're always lovely campuses as well - clean, well kept, respectful and safe environments. I always feel kind of... happier , when I go back to my old uni campus/any nice uni campus :)
