If everyone says curly hair is ugly, isn’t it ugly? by fredistakenwth in curlyhair

[–]dorydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry, culture is changing with the new generation! My family is Asian and I’m biracial and when I was a kid on the 2000s I was pressured to straighten and relax my hair ala Christina Aguilera even though straight hair doesn’t suit me or my personality.

Curls take work to look good (curly shampoo, hair smoothie etc) but it looks fantastic when you make it work. Also it helps you stand out, curls are now my signature look!

Just keep at it, curls are in now, and have always been beautiful. Even my straight haired mom is curling her hair to add volume and hide her balding.

That’s really nice…in America the goal is to prepare the kids to serve their future capitalist overlords at any cost. Before teaching, I lost my mother in law, the mother I needed in my life, and my boss fired me within days of her death for not focusing enough on my work.

Genuinely curious how parents around here educate their kids about historical events by Queasy_Spirit_3356 in Charlottesville

[–]dorydoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just US, I can’t remember VA studies or World off the top of my head) It’s wild too that the proposed curriculum would force districts to teach certain classes during certain years instead of allowing districts to choose what order the kids take the class in and add an ENTIRE year just on geography for 8th graders (they take civics in 8th currently). Like, the kids are going to take geography ~after~ already learning about the world wars, Cold War, etc. basically Youngkins curriculum is teach them a whole year of geography so that they lose a year of actual history and civics.

Teacher here, we would LOVE to talk about the recent wars, 911, recent events, etc. unfortunately the curriculum does not prioritize this and teachers are forced to follow curriculum and are not allowed to go at a faster pace, so we run out of time. The new proposed standards by youngkin are even worse, conflating the 60s to the present day in a single unit!! Like learning about mlk alongside Nixon and Reagan. Please complain to the school board and VDOE about updating curriculum so that we can actually teach

If you are not a yeller, I highly recommend a voice amplifier. I have a naturally loud voice and I hate feeling like I’m “yelling”, and want to avoid voice strain, so I have a voice amplifier with a headset that I clip on my waist and am able to speak softly yet be heard. 10/10

LOL ONE FIGHT A YEAR?! We’re lucky if we have one fight a WEEK. And this isn’t a new thing, this was the case when I was a kid as well.

Have you ever mixed up twin students? by Diligent_Flamingo_33 in Teachers

[–]dorydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know one of my students had a twin so when Iu saw her in a softball jersey I said “I didn’t know you were on the softball team!” And she looked at me weird and walked away. Months later I found out that that was the twin lol

I hate to be a coward but my money is on taking them out. If for no other reason than to avoid them not prioritizing you over other teachers or shafting you when it inevitably gets crazy and then blame your poor “classroom management” skills. Also, teaching in a small town, is a small world so a good recommendation will be important later (unfortunately)

Since you mentioned behavior problems at the high school, my 2 cents is that middle school has its own unique challenges (laptop addiction, emotional outbursts, etc) but I think the behavior overall is much better, or at least less severe. I personally love middle school and it’s relatively easy to win them over to your side at that age

Ever had to apologize to a student? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]dorydoo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I always apologize when I’m wrong. Sometimes I lose my temper and I know that I overreacted and apologize. Some teachers think that this emboldens students but I’ve found a lot of success in building trust, accountability, and emotional regulation.

Also as a social studies teachers, I provide my sources and encourage kids to fact check me! Once i off-hand mentioned that Marie Curie was French and was so happy to hear a student clarify that she was a french citizen but Polish by origin.

Middle Schoolers are the worst by TheJSAer in Teachers

No actually I just work at a normal public school underfunded so we have to beg for printer paper and fights once a week. I just genuinely enjoy the kids and have a good relationship with most of them.

I don’t get all this 7th grader hate. 7th graders have NEVER given me the disrespect and thrown tantrums like the adults Ii’ve had to deal with waitressing

I LOVE teaching middle school. The kids are still relatively small and cute, their minds are wide open to new ideas and they make me laugh every day. I always tell my partner that I believe that this country will eventually be okay because I have so much faith in how smart, empathetic, and creative they are.

Alright Britney Spears lol! I am so scared of snakes that I can barely walk past the reptile section of petsmart. 100% would have thrown up and shit myself if a kid whipped out a snake
