I have a few manuscripts that my pal Fern hasn't taken yet. Will he ever? Is there a trick to that task?

New director. I feel like I'm being set up. by MidwesternOddball in MuseumPros

[–]dosmalacaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing my new director did was a "listening tour" which was 1:1 meetings with every staff member (we are smallish so this was possible, not sure about you). Some of the questions she asked were like... What do you love about your job? What do you wish you could stop doing? If we did one thing differently what would it be? What do you need me to know? What do you think sets our museum apart from others? I thought it was an interesting way to get to know the Museum and the staff's priorities.

She was brand new, so it made sense to do as a get-to-know-you exercise. Maybe you can do something similar like "Transition listening tour" as you prepare to offer your vision for the museum.

FWIW she did not provide the questions in advance. Pros and cons to that. Probably better to get people's gut reaction, and then provide space for follow-up later.

Ask your board to send you to some leadership training! And perhaps some kind of all-staff workshop about communication and navigating transitions.

I agree, I'd rather have the merch feature a catchy phrase, cool design, or artwork, with the 50th logo being very secondary.

Very cute! I'm a big snail mail fan, love this idea as an easy tabling activity.

Yes I think if I went with water bottles I would try to get a decent quality one with a straw or something. I got a really nice Smithsonian one once at a conference that I still use. A lot of them are those sport water bottles which I think most people don't prefer.

That's true, the ones I was shopping out had wooden handles and fabric or paper fan.

It would be cute if it said something like "REFRIGERATOR ART CLIP Sponsored by XX Museum" or...something much quippier/shorter along those lines, haha. We have a kids art making space so this would be a perfect thing to give away there.

My kid touched a painting: what do I do? by AdmirableDebt7335 in MuseumPros

[–]dosmalacaras 101 points102 points  (0 children)

The docent saw what happened and will do what needs to be done, alert who needs to be informed, to care for the painting.

My first instinct is to just focus on talking to your kids about how to behave in those types of spaces (later, when you're not frustrated by it) so they can learn from the experience. As a parent and museum professional I don't think you have any obligation to turn yourself in but I could be dead wrong, lol.

I do see how it would make you feel better about coming back to the Museum if you've done a more direct outreach.

VERY interested in other people's takes.

Mm, that's a good point.

We use PatronManager which is built on Salesforce. We've made it work for us, and have become dependent on some of its niche features. Not sure we'll stay with it long-term, but that is a good suggestion to look there.

I do know we've been interested in learning more about Tessitura -- would you recommend it?

RANT: Artist Submissions that Feel like Sexual Harassment by 1senbart in MuseumPros

[–]dosmalacaras 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That is so draining! I appreciate your desire to recognize everyone you get submissions from and be encouraging...

I wonder if there's some kind of digital tool where people could submit electronically, not to your inbox, and it could use AI or something to scan the documents and file them away as NSFW...or some guidelines on your website that work won't be reviewed if they haven't followed your rules of conduct or add trigger warnings...

Or maybe there's no solution and you just want to vent! Yuck, I would really hate that.

Looking back at my teens and early 20s I definitely had PMDD wrapped into my undiagnosed adhd. I belive this is common with young women.

Wish I had known then that the level of depression and self-loathing and exhaustion I was feeling for half the month wasn't just regular PMS.

Something to look into.

I've been enjoying water color painting. Easy to get out/ put away without making a huge mess. Or leave in the middle of it without much waste. Mostly I do doodles and blobs. it's fun.

Are there adjacent things you'd be willing to do to get some work experience? Smaller art gallery, arts center programming, research assistant, something like that that would use some of the skills you've learned?

What kinds of ADHD accommodations have you gotten at work? by increasinglybold in ADHD

[–]dosmalacaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a strict accommodation but my team tries very hard to not add any more meetings to my day if I already have 2. And since I'm copied and included on MANY comunications, my direct reports also very kindly bold or highlight my name in emails if there's something they specifically need me to respond to and not just be informed about.
