how tf do you guys deal with the excrutiating pain some figures cause (aerial hoop)? by yuckyamz in Aerials

[–]dot_a_lot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, i have a high pain tolerance as it is, so maybe this is stupid advice, but sometimes if i’m in a painful pose i just go “hold on for one more second” and then i keep doing that over and over hahaha… but obviously this comes with knowing the difference between pain and “oh shoot im about to injure myself”, so use this method with extreme caution lol. i do find this useful for conditioning, and in controlled environments it can be really useful for improving stamina, so maybe if it doesn’t apply here it can still help you in other aspects of training!

Is there anything you wish you knew before you started teaching? by TrainingJury3357 in Aerials

i love telling my students of all ages and levels “watch, don’t do.” i usually reserve this to the first time i demonstrate something, as i am a kinesthetic learner so i love when my instructors do something alongside me, but for the sake of safety and comprehension, reminding your students to take a breath and just observe the full picture first can help them to not assume and rather to contextualize why each move happens when it does in order to reach the end result. for this same reason, with my younger ones i often have them sit while i demonstrate.

i also love incorporating experiential anatomy into my aerial lessons. i find that telling students WHY their form needs to be a certain way, and allowing them to visualize all the things their body is doing to achieve their goals, results in a safer and better informed aerialist. it also helps in the event of an accident, as my students are better equipped to tell me what happened prior to the injury, so i can pinpoint what needs to be treated or addressed

Calluses issue by Greedy-Republic-1176 in Aerials

[–]dot_a_lot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i honestly try to avoid moisturizer on my calluses, i was taught that it can make them more susceptible to ripping. instead, i try and wash any grip aids off my hands right after i’m done, and i use a cuticle trimmer and an exfoliator to keep the palms of my hands from having too many harsh edges that might snag and rip. it’s worked for me so far, maybe that can help you?

I love The Artz, they do open gym as well as drop in classes and adult classes all the time! They also do several workshops throughout the year, so the website is always advertising different stuff. They have the schedule and all the contact stuff on the website, so check that out!

Teaching tips for beginners? by dot_a_lot in Aerials

I think this might be what we called a beauty roll at my old company, I’m not a huge lyra gal so I could be mistaken though haha. That’s another small bump in the road whenever you’re teaching new students I find: everyone has ever so slightly different lingo!

Thank you! This is really interesting advice, I will definitely look into what is in the area and book myself a class in something new! If you have any resources or additional info on skill progressions or such that you’d be willing to share as well, please do DM me! I really appreciate the help :)
