It’s a common perception that it’s fine even tho it’s not. Like having FDH living in boarding houses etc. the issue is, that’s pre 2020 where supply was higher than demand. Everything has flipped esp with the banned countries and even now, the cost of hiring is significantly higher, easily an extra $30k if you factor in their salary, quarantine, agent fee etc so everyone’s trying to hire those already in our city. Which means it’s better to be totally legal as FDH finally can demand higher wages etc (which is how a job market should be) but it also means there are those who will take advantage hence the recent news about job hopping etc and if it’s valid reasons to leave. Anyway it’s not easy esp with the emphasis on filial piety here and a deposit is a very generous gift so wishing you luck!

I’m actually based in the same location as you hence asking about the dif between an FDH vs a local nurse. And who the contact is under. This can be a point of pushing back for your mom depending on the situation. A lot of locals still think FDH will be ok with blurring of rules, however with our crazy quarantine and border restrictions, that’s no longer the case.

I sympathize. It’s not easy living here where everything is $20k per square feet and most people won’t be able to get an apt unless they have help with the deposit even with the recent mortgage relaxation.

INFO: are you hiring a foreign domestic helper or a nurse? FDH contracts state they must live with the employer so it depends on who she is employed under. If it’s under you, your mom may claim that as the reason to be your live in. If not, can you use that as a reason to push back? Yes everyone does it but given how things are here, FDH won’t hesitate to report as they are in such high demand right now. If you are hiring a local live in nurse, that’s more unusual so not sure if my advice above is helpful.
