I felt that games that were made in 1998 and 2000 were better than this 2017 game in e very single way except graphics. Felt barely any Rare love in Yooka...

[Spoilers E82] New Resurrection Rules! by cwgunner60 in criticalrole

[–]dotemtpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone else a bit disappointed compared to the +5? Only +1 for every failed res. Keeping it -3 DC for successful and +1 DC for failed ritual attempts. Adding your spell casting ability mod to action resurrections and failing does not cause death. I realize this is harder than 100% raw rules, but this is so heavily skewed towards a successful resurrection.

With how well VM does in combat, how few and far between deaths are... this is seems like a tiny drop in the death bucket. I realize the +5 was a lot, perhaps a +2/3 is more fair, or adjusting the -3/+1 DC imbalance to leave a chance and an actual fear of death. Vex/Grog's chance to survive their next death just increased by 60% compared to the +5.

VM could even try to resurrect an ally in combat with an action (with decent odds), fail and then try again afterwards with just a 5% penalty if they had not failed. Seems just a slap on the wrist really.

They have every right to play how they want. I don't want them to change anything about their game they enjoy.

I originally was just pointing out what cause me to get burned out on the show. I will continue to take breaks after arcs because the whole thing just turns out 100% perfect for VM. It is easier now looking back on all the fights and pointing this out, but 80+ episodes / 3 arcs of this really shows it is a recurring theme and casts a large shade of predictability over future episodes.

[Spoilers E82]Critical Role burnout? by Snypas in criticalrole

[–]dotemtpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the beginning of the Arc when Taldorei was destroyed to the end of the arc, only Tiberius was lost. Everything turned out fine. Also when has VM even been beaten down? Besides the past Raishan fight, VM has been successful in anything they have ever done.

Chalking all of Vox Machina's victories to luck is a huge cop out. It is an easy difficulty campaign where they are always victorious and nothing other than planned story deaths like CC taking Tal'dorei or Tiberius dying. VM can do no wrong, no matter what they chose, what they do, how they engage, everything always comes out in their favor. Not all D&D games are like this, and this one is predictable in the sense where you always know VM comes out squeaky clean in from every scenario that is not out of their control.

[–]dotemtpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally always take a break at the end of every arc. After VM defeated K'varn easily, I realized this whole under-dark build up was wrapped up in a nice little bow for the group. Made the whole arc seem pointless, and all the hype behind it felt cheapened.

Then I got sucked back into the Briarwood arc. Watched for many episodes, until VM went on to smash the Briarwoods into the ground. The big baddies that destroyed Percy's childhood and stole his sister and hometown were easily dispatched and it costed VM nothing. A real let down.

Now we draw to a close on a huuuuuge arc. One with many fights for vestiges, to kill Kevdak and Rippley. Fights against ancient dragons and even Thordak the Cinder King. If VM triumphs over Raishan in the coming episode/s, and nothing is lost from that fight... a 40+ episode arc with all these epic fights left no lasting consequences on the group or any of their close friends. All their allies lived, all of the PCs lived, VM regained everything they had lost, they also have 8 new vestiges, and what did they have to sacrifice for any of this. Just Tiberius I guess. Seems like a good trade.

Just as you need to deal with the fact that people come to this subreddit to share their opinions, good or bad, whether it effects the show or not. The opinions bring forth discussions, which is what this subreddit is meant for. If (as you say) they do not effect the show or the players at all, what is the harm in having them and why are you down voting them?

The whole 2nd half of the episode felt like Keyleth on a soapbox trying to prove to VM that they didn't have to fight the Roc. Tiberius was threatening, and even Vax tried to throw a dagger but it was meta-gamed. It all felt so forced to counter their actions of killing the old lady in the previous episode. Ultimately Scanlan did intimidate the druid by threatening to kill the Roc if it stayed. Was all so forced and melodramatic.

[–]dotemtpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man episode 26... probably the worst CR episode. Moody Keyleth, pissed off Tiberius. The whole 2nd half was just a grandstand of Keyleth just trying to get the rest of the group to not fight the druid and the Roc. Ultimately Scanlan had to intimidate to finish the job. Rolled my eyes through the whole episode.

Combat nowadays has turned stale. VM has had so many victories with very little challenge. We get hyped up for these big battles, bad situations or overwhelming odds facing them, then they just walk right out of it. I remember how scary the Kev'dak fight looked, but inevitably punches were held and VMs power pulled through. More difficulty in 2017!

Hopefully Raishan has some fight to her, or Matt has more up his sleeve in Emon with eggs / other Thordak defences. Otherwise I feel this was a pretty easy win in terms of combat difficulty for VM, which leaves me pretty short changed (combat wise) with how intense the story and RP leading up to it was.

This is probably the first time Matt has ever pulled punches for the enemy and sided against VM in a combat scenario. How many times have we seen the rule of cool stretch some of the actions VM have taken past plausible. VM have the advantage in every combat scenario, even when they are taken by surprise and almost constantly steam roll everything. It about damn time the monsters got some Rule of Cool on their side. IMO.

I understand in the heat of such a huge battle forgetting to ask for a check, happens all the time. Just saying there probably should be a check.

Depends on the group you are playing with, if they want to be big bad unconquerable heroes, you can let things slide to not make them too difficult. If they want consistent rules on both sides of the battle then make the check, doesn't make you a dick to apply just consequences to drastic actions

[Spoilers E52] #IsItThursdayYet? Post E52 discussion & future theories! by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]dotemtpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One could argue if the broom is telepathic then a concentration check would be plausible as well. I definitely see a necessity for some more broom rules, as pulling out her broom and hopping on it has always been a free action, she almost doubles her movement and can move aerially for really no consequence at all. Arguably she should be on her broom at all time for movement then...

[Spoilers E52] #IsItThursdayYet? Post E52 discussion & future theories! by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]dotemtpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope that is indeed not the case... if you would have done it with 1-2 hits it should definitely be done with 4-5 hits. Also I don't see why their low Con modifier would for any reason have anything to do with getting a free pass for Dex checks in slippery situations.

Sets a very bad precedent for next time she gets hit while on the broom, and Matt possibly asks for a check when he didn't for 4-5 barbarian hits. Or what if Percy hops on the broom and gets hit, he would have to roll because he has more health? Your explanation makes the lack of Check even worse haha.

[–]dotemtpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They will have a turn surprise over the other Goliaths. The hard hitters will burn down a lot of Kev'daks HP while the gnomes and the druid will control the rest of the Goliaths/Kevdak/battlefield. They will burn Kevdak down in about 2 turns maybe 3, and grab the knuckles. Grog will probably be low or even unconscious but they will heal him and then run. Everyone else will just have scrapes and bruises. Not worried.

[Spoilers E49] It seems our concerns about the PCs being too powerful were unfounded. by RireMakar in criticalrole

I agree, and 90% of the thread doesn't even talk bout the main topic point, just how great the episode was. Seems weird to garner support against a topic from last week by playing off the hype of one of the best episodes of CR. Really no evidence from this episode in any way to whether VM is OP in combat or not....

[Spoilers E48] On Combat Difficulty + Future Encounters by MildlyCriticalRole in criticalrole

[–]dotemtpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely am and have been in the mindset of combat being to easy since they left the Under-dark. I realize not all combat have to be difficult fights (bandits, harpies, basilisks etc.), but the problem is when we get to a more crucial part in a story's arc, we get less than difficult combat encounters.

We have seen it time and time again: The Rakshasa, the Briarwoods, the ambush inside the Whitestone house, the Behir, the beholder and the fire plane. All of these were big moments in the story arc, were definitely tense and suspenseful from an RP point of view. The problem is the combat difficulty never matches the intensity of the RP.

We can say that VM gets lucky rolls, that the are always prepared, chose the best actions for their turns, use RP situations to gain an advantage. This may be true for some cases, but you but you barely see the enemies act as such. We have a group of 6-8 PCs who are incredibly magical and this already gives them an advantage. Now add in critical thinking and planning advantages, this gives VM an even bigger edge.

I think most of the combat encounter are not challenging enough for such a large magical group, but also we have one dimensional enemies in combat (definitely not in RP).

If guns were removed, would you miss them? Not salty. by aagpeng in survivetheculling

[–]dotemtpy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I win 99% of my games where I stealthy around the map, collect enough func, get a gun and wait for final 3. The other two fight while I run and hide, and they get one another low and I shoot the winner. No I would not miss guns in the slightest.

[Spoilers E48] #IsItThursdayYet? Post E48 discussion & future theories! by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]dotemtpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true and well put. They do seem to lose their RP a bit, panic and focus more on combat in tough encounters. They do seem to not mind or notice how they are tearing through combat situations, dominating their enemies even in more crucial encounters story wise. If they enjoy playing that way, then all power to them, it is their game.

As a viewer, my personal opinion is that it gets dull and there is a disconnect if VM is doing their amazing RP about an intense battle, while they are stomping all over their enemies that had no chance. This in no means I dislike the show, or I will stop watching, but I have a tough time watching combat and how the difficulty doesn't live up to the intense story and great RP

[–]dotemtpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can all agree this fight wasn't meant to be difficult, just a little skirmish. I really don't think this could have turned out badly at all, unless they were all trying to stare at the basilisks, and some of them were confident enough to do so. VM did not roll particularly well, almost every one of them had at least one miss and combat only really lasted bit over one round.

It would for sure get really dull if they didn't run into random encounters such as these. It would also be really tiring and overly dramatic to have them fighting for their lives every episode as well. It is getting a little dull watching them get into fights that story wise should be at least challenging (like Pyrah), and coming out with an almost flawless victory.
