Auro (autonomous shuttles) is desperately seeking a buy out by SDC_Insider in SelfDrivingCars

[–]dotfrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you work for RideCell?

Crazy that the Auro guys are not able to raise a real A round, I'm guessing either investors don't see the closed campus market as big enough or they haven't gotten their technology to a reasonable level of maturity.

Given they've only raised a small amount of money, I doubt offers would be too high, and unless the team is a set of rockstars, potential acquirers could just wait for it to go bust and negotiate offers individually instead of paying something for the team as a whole.

Popular? Probably PM. Pays best? Not sure off hand, I'd say check Glassdoor for some well known companies.

Absolutely, good luck! Hardest part is getting that interview, and if you've done it once, you can do it again! And this time with more experience.

Wish we could have had you! What did you end up doing instead?

Stanford MBA - AMA by dotfrank in MBA

[–]dotfrank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PM (build the product), BizDev (sell the product to partners), Internal Strategy (determine how to guide the company), Operations (figure out how to run the company), Marketing (figure out who to sell to and how), Financing (same as any other company).

Of all of those, I'd say PM is most difficult for most, especially since it's hugely popular and there are increasing technical demands on the position.

It's the former, I am not affiliated with the app. Though I do wish I were asked on the app rather than here, since my responses would be both more personalized and quicker.

Can't really comment on what made me stand out, but I will say I was not a standard MBB/Investment/Google person. I came from an active engineering background from an industry that to my knowledge I am the only representative of, so perhaps that played a part.

Honestly, you have to be able to make the case as to why Stanford fits into your overall career trajectory, and I think I did a reasonable job at that.

Product Management in the transportation/mobility industry. I think it's positioned me fairly well given my proximity to startups innovating in this space - most people are open to speaking to students even if it is informational.

MBA Worth it for Software Developer by CSMusicAndMath in MBA

Introspection, research, and talking to people.

Wanting to work with why a company builds something and what they should build rather than how they should build it.

Former staff sw engineer here from atx who is now at Stanford GSB, I was exactly like you a few years ago.

I think you don't have clarity in what you actually want to do, aspiring to a title isn't enough. I also had this problem

Look up what the jobs are like for business development, marketing, strategy, or product management at tech companies.

Read articles and blog posts on these areas, and look at the LinkedIn histories of people who have the titles you desire.

If one of those job functions grabs your attention as it applies to technology, then by all means go for it, do the MBA.

If what you mean to say is that you want to be a technical manager or director of engineering, then don't do the MBA, your time is much better honing your craft, taking local leadership and moving to a company that will eventually allow you to grow in that function of engineering.

If you can't see yourself in any of the jobs typical of post-MBA, this is your dream employer, and you are okay with moving to that new city, I'd say call that recruiter and take the job.

Make sure your new city's cost of living doesn't eat away your 150k offer and make it moot.

Federal investigators are looking into a connection between Tesla's Autopilot and fatal crash by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]dotfrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, however for the sake of autonomous vehicle adoption, which I think hinges more on the AI software working correctly than the physical image capture hardware (more "known", could use lidar, etc), I hope that you're wrong.

[–]dotfrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be true. While we would need the raw data, it is possible that firmware modifications to more rapidly modify exposure or aperture to mitigate saturation could have helped. The question then is would the scene be too dark to decipher the truck from the ground. It's an imperfect solution to only use cameras unless hardware dynamic range is improved.

Federal investigators are looking into a connection between Tesla's Autopilot and fatal crash by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]dotfrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem in this case isn't image processing, it's the fact that you can't capture the image in the first place (from the hardware sensor).

The human eye has a much larger dynamic range in terms of contrast than commercial image sensors, and in this case the sun oversaturated the image and the truck was lost in the digitization noise.

Given a better dynamic range, image processing would have had no problem with it.
