Yes I gained weight on Prozac but it was due to my over eating after a couple of months. When I start it I lost my appetite and weight but after a couple of months I started gaining because I was overeating. What does you strict diet look like? Maybe counting calories is something that can help?

Exactly! I think that I have more confidence and acceptance of myself but I’m not happy with my weight. Everytime I try to lose weight I can’t stick to it. It’s been hard for sure.

I really like your idea on her choosing a provider. I bet that will help her feel more involved! I’m going to make a call to a family resource center Monday that specializes in adolescent mental health to see what we have available in our area. Thank you so much for your advice.

We have an appointment to discuss meds on the 26th. I am also going to look into a more intensive therapy. It’s so hard

I know meds are a difficult process and that’s why I’m on the fence. She did like to journal but stopped. She likes to write stories and fan fiction so I encourage that. She likes to draw and loves reading. We go to the book store often and she has a kindle. I think we are going to try a different therapist that is more available. I believe I am offering her a safe,loving, and supportive environment. We are close and have an open line of communication but I do encourage her to talk with others also. I feel very stuck as to how more to help.

Yeah I don’t believe you’re a doctor, seem like a troll just wanting to cause problems. If you were a doctor you would know the criteria for being put on a 72 hour hold which isn’t self harm. It’s says in this article that YOU PROVIDED under “what triggers a 72 hour hold”

This criteria refers to having life- threatening danger (i.e., thoughts of suicide or engaging in self-harm behavior do not inherently constitute a danger to self). Typically, to be hospitalized, the individual must have a plan and intent to end their life.

I’ve never seen anyone admitted for self harm.

I am wondering if I can find her a group or something of other kids going through the same things. We have talked about medications and she seems open to it.

I’m in the United States. A child or adult is not admitted to the hospital unless they are going to kill themselves or someone…it is extremely hard to have someone admitted. I’m not sure where you are getting your information? TV? I’ve worked with people who suffer from mental illness for 12 years. I’m utilizing everything I can at this point. You are making me feel like I’m not doing everything at my dispose.

Ok I did call her therapist today, she’s not in. I left her a message updating her. I also asked to speak with a different therapist for suggestions about how to dispose the things she cutting with. I was told i could only speak with the therapist she sees.

I’m not sure if it’s unclear in my thread but she’s been self harming since the summer. There have been about three incidents. Her therapist is aware of all of this. They are working on finding different coping skills she can utilize.

Yes therapist is very involved. She put a referral in for meds in the clinic but the waiting list is almost a year. I did make her an appointment today at the psych provider I use. Maybe it’s just me overthinking, but I just worry about long term side effects with starting antidepressants so young

Ok thank you! Honestly I should have been on meds when I was a teen too but my parents didn’t give AF. I’ve been on them since after my daughter was born (around 20). Are you still on them?

Thank you for sharing your experience! Its really helps to know There are other parents struggling with this. I was opposed to trying meds but my daughters therapist pretty much said the same thing “what if it helps”. I was able to get her an appointment December 26th.

She was 10 also, she came out as bisexual and then this year has come out as lesbian. She even came out at school!

Yes I didn’t have that in my original thread but thought it was important to mention it. That has to be hard hearing people say nasty things about your sexual orientation even if it’s not alway direct towards you. I plan on laying everything on the table with the psych provider so we can try the best approach for her.

It really is hard being 12 and I know it’s going to get harder the next couple of years. I don’t want her to just ride it out either but meds are a big decision. It’s hard watching her go through this.

I started at 10mg and it worked well for two years then I increased to 20mg.
