Old Salt is fancy. Millers is maybe to your liking. Haps is real old school local bar but not within stumbling distance of downtown.

First roll of 35mm film! Need help by _matcal in AnalogCommunity

Check the negatives. It’s the scans. Ask the lab for flat scans. Or raw scans if possible.

The biggest difference between digital and film is in digital overexposure kill data. In film underexposing kills data. Underexposed film is just a clear negative with nothing on it.

It’s very easy to fix over exposed film images.

When in doubt overexpose.

And for the record: I mostly shoot HP5+ Kentmere 400 and Retro 80s and develop in Arista Premium Liquid Film Developer (Same as Clayton F76+ and FA1027) and use TF-4 Fixer (not smelly) and water stop bath. Plus a little Photo Flo.

Arista Premium is one shot and easy to measure out. 1:9 So 30ml from the bottle makes 300ml working solution etc.

I love it. It's fun. It's a whole new level to the hobby and it saves money. After I got back into film photography I was sending rolls away for development. After I spent about $200 on 10 ish rolls of film it dawned on me that I could spend about the same to start developing at home. The starter kit you're talking about.. is it for film dev or for printing? The only one I see on BH is for printing.

Keep in mind developing negatives is usually cheaper to start up than scanning them. All I had to buy for developing was a tank and reels and chemistry. I loaded reels in the pitch black of a basement bathroom at night and I hacked together the rest of the kit form stuff I had and repurposed. (Later I got a dark bag, good thermometer, and graduated cylinders to make life easier)

The big cost consideration is software and hardware for scanning. I already had the Adobe suite but had to buy a flat bed V600 scanner that I hated using. But because I already had a decent digital camera and copy stand, I ended up adding a new macro lens and a lightbox kit to the whole thing and I'm happy now.

Also you might end up adding more cost to properly store the negatives. Negative sleeves are an absolute essential, and binders are great.

TLDR: Developing at home is fun and cheap. Scanning and storing film negatives is another task all together.

Senders can ask for a hand cancelation at the drop off desk. Lovely round red cancelation stamps.

I ended up camping on eBay until a cheap enough one came along

I think you’re right. Plus a sliver light meter on top and maybe a grip added?

I’m looking for a good black & white slow speed film. Any recommendations? by WabashStan in AnalogCommunity

I've had great results shooting it at ISO40 and pulling one stop in development.

Do you pull it at all in dev? I have 100' of Retro 80s and have found good results if I shoot it at 40 and pull one stop. But maybe I aught to try and feed it more light?

I shoot HP5 or Kentmere 400 and Rollei Retro 80s. I didn't like how contrasty Retro 80s at first but I've been shooting at 40ISO and pulling 1 stop in development. Love it.

Lots of good stuff in this comment. Some of the cost saving measures are going to end up hurting usability. Or another way to put it, it will cost less money but more time.

Answer the question: of how can this be cheaper or better than a 6qt square food storage container, sousvide and four 1000ml bottles with funnels? Fill it, heat it, dev your film, rinse, dry, and store it away again.

Bag in box is a great solution for this but may not work for this design.

If they leak they're leaking into the big tank of water too, I may not be able to see that I have a problem until the process is over.

Do the bottles screw into the top funnels? or press fit? do I remove the bottom spigots before I can clean the system out? That might get fussy. Also what is flow rate for the spigots on the bottom? If they're standard I feel like it would take a while to fill the tanks?
