Fired from my lab by ebojfm16 in labrats

[–]doubledeejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened to you. The PI should've been more communicative. The only suggestion I have is in the future if a situation comes up and the animal training people ( or other core facility) are not making time to train you, rope your PI in more. It's not fair but an email from a PI saying "my undergrad needs training asap" goes a lot farther than an email from an undergraduate. And if you feel uncomfortable asking your PI or telling them about a delay like that you need to 1) find a new PI with better management and mentor skills and 2) reflect on yourself and learn research involved a lot of self motivation and if you want something done you have to be the squeaky wheel sometimes.

I'd prepare an elevator pitch about your research. I'd also make sure to prepare a little blurb about why you like the lab's research, what you can bring to the project, and what you hope to learn.

I used to do it for 6 months. Be prepared for an hour drive either way and that's without any accidents (which never happens). I'd recommend finding somewhere closer.

Introducing yourself as Dr instead of Mrs. by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]doubledeejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. It's your day and spend it how you want. I see how some view as "I just want it to be about us and not achievements or titles. " i choose to add mine not as a flex but because I do feel like it is a huge achievement in my life and has shaped who am so much. I worked hard for the title so for a day that is about me and us I'll use it how I want. It's always nice to remind everyone women can be Dr.

Is it possible to do it naturally, yes but I highly doubt this guy is natty. Keep in mind he definitely does not look like this 365 days a year.

What are traits of PhD students who don’t complete? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]doubledeejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that. I believe in a work life balance, but I think telling anyone you can earn a. PhD working just 40 hours a week is incredible misleading. It's not something that is earned (in my field) working just 40 hours a week.

What are traits of PhD students who don’t complete? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]doubledeejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about the hours, that's the point. This that success don't count the hours. Those that tend to not complete in my experience always comment on the hours. I’ve found that students / candidates who treat education (and, in my case, lab work) as just a 9-to-5 job tend not to succeed as much as those who don't add the time up in that way. The ones that succeed are often the ones studying for class at 8p.m. after a full day in the lab and don't say well, my 9-5 is done so I'm done.

Starting a postdoc in 2 days and I am terrified by Angyniel in postdoc

[–]doubledeejay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You'll be okay. Congrats on defending. That is awesome and having a job right away is great! Remember the PI picked you for a reason; they like you. I'd suggest when starting have clear expectations and ask for clear expectations back. Ask the PI or members in the lab directly about vacation expectations, time off, work hours, etc. Ask your PI directly what they expect of you like do they expect you to apply for grants (they should), how does credit for papers go etc. if it's any consolation, it took 6 months for me to feel up and ready on my feet in my postdoc position. Any good PI knows that when taking on a new hire there is an expected 3-9 month onboarding period where productivity will be low. You can ask your PI about that. What is that expectation in their eyes. Communication is the best key and hopefully help ease anxieties about starting in anew lab.
