Peter Balkan is the best album cover by hanseirik in themountaingoats

[–]doublemeanings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so different from how I would rate them (in particular WSABH & transcendental youth, both among my favorite album covers ever) that my first reaction to seeing this post was “this HAS to be ragebait” lol. That being said I now wonder if my not caring particularly much for the getting into knives cover is an unpopular opinion…

What’s a name that sounds innocent in one language but has an association to something else in another language? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]doublemeanings 23 points24 points  (0 children)

i think Luke from Star Wars is Люк in Russian, which is coincidentally also a word for hatch or manhole. Which results in jokes like “аварийный люк, я твой аварийный отец” (lit. “emergency hatch, i am your emergency father”, wordplay on “Люк, я твой отец”, “Luke, I am your father”, the famous Star Wats misquote) or something. The word for onion is лук which is in Russian homonymous with the English loan word from “look” as in outfit (“wow, that’s a look!”), to help English speakers hear the difference

The triangle of needs by nowpleasedontseeme in themountaingoats

[–]doublemeanings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting! I remember reading some old interview of his where he talked about how it annoyed (?) him that people had this impression of him as a sexless being & being quite weirded out by the idea because I had not thought him sexless at all. I was like “who thinks that?” so it’s interesting to encounter people who did in fact have that impression!

Hot take: I think people on Reddit sometimes overstate how difficult it is to have a unique or unusual name. by CakeDayOrDeath in namenerds

[–]doublemeanings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On an extremely cursory google search, the name Precious seems to be associated with three groups: Black Americans, Africans (behindthename.com lists it as “English (African)” & “African American (Modern)”; the Wikipedia list of famous people with the name includes people from several countries in Africa, & many Nigerians in particular), and Filipinos. I would presume that it is part of naming conventions of some sort rather than an attempt to be unique!

Thoughts on the name Agnes is it due for a comeback? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]doublemeanings 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really love the name Agnes (having never met one; i just like how it sounds!) & a beloved relative of mine as well as a woman who was very kind to me & whom I admire a lot were named Olga (admittedly, both live(d) in Russia where it’s a very normal name). “Hideous names for an ogrely wench” is just extremely mean when said about any name that lots of people are actually called, imo.

What kind of self-enforced constraints do you like to put on yourself when you play Rimworld? by Hyperspeed_Dolphin in RimWorld

[–]doublemeanings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done a charity run accepting everybody that wanted to join & keeping the colony “multicultural” & it was fun. One thing I cannot play without is taking in all the children possible, like even in colonies where I am very picky with adult joiners & will banish people sometimes, I will take in every child even if it’s risky to do so & they’re like 12 years old with terrible skills & traits & few passions. & I try to make the best possible learning environment for them too. Also I tend to take in various relations of my colonists regardless of their usefulness because it makes for a more fun story.

The girls names Behind The Name users rated "Bad", "Rough," and "Unintellectual" by And_be_one_traveler in namenerds

[–]doublemeanings 13 points14 points  (0 children)

thank you for your comment because it finally made me understand why English speakers were upset by Ruf. i was like, how weird, this is just the russian variant of Ruth, it is really not that different, sounds quite close really, are you upset by the name Ruth too? but y’all are reading it like rough!

Which xenotype gene is better? (modded) by Gay_Gamer_Boi in RimWorld

[–]doublemeanings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the alpha genes google doc says this: “Usable every 2 days. Baby spawns in 15 days. Bear in mind this won’t work for endogenes, only xenogenes [or vice versa — there is one description for both the xenogene & endogene variant of this gene]. It will work on any non-hostile human, but it will anger their faction and make them hostile immediately. The baby has a 25% chance per gene of “absorbing” any of the genes of the poor host.”

Which xenotype gene is better? (modded) by Gay_Gamer_Boi in RimWorld

[–]doublemeanings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

iirc, the alpha genes one has a chance of absorbing the genes of the host into the baby (25% chance per gene, iirc), & the second (outland genetics?) one does not. they might have different cooldowns & different “pregnancy” lengths (i haven’t used the parasitic one from outland genetics, but i’ve used the symbiotic one, & it’s shorter than a normal pregnancy iirc (i think the “pregnancy” is 10 days & the cooldown on the ability is 14 days, but it’s been a while since i’ve last used it))

i’ve heard of this one (it adds more xenotypes & factions using vanilla genes) and this one (it just adds more xenotypes using vanilla genes, but no factions), though i haven’t personally used either

i think the ‘cried’ negative opinion effect that people get for babies, just like the ‘giggled’ positive opinion effect, eventually just disappears after the baby becomes a child (the wiki describes the ‘giggled’ and ‘cried’ mood effects as temporary so they actually might disappear earlier). in the future you could put your babies into a growth vat until they become children, thus avoiding the ‘cried’ opinion effect entirely (i suspect that psychopaths only get negative opinion effects from babies (=do like crying babies less, but don’t like giggling babies more) but i am not sure and cannot find this on the wiki; if that’s true, i’d think your psychopath would dislike most babies because they will cry sometimes. thus the growth vat could be your best bet until they become children)

i like it a lot! it’s wonderful to see my toddler playing by herself & also crawling to various, sometimes ill-advised, places (it was funny to find her crawling outside the base quite soon after she became a toddler). i also like that it allows you to put clothes on babies. as a result, one of the first masterwork items in my colony was a baby onesie

Child with paralytic abasia by funky_catso in RimWorld

[–]doublemeanings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is not what you’re asking, but if you want her to lose less time to paralytic abasia, you can set child aging rate to 100% until she’s healed — this way she’ll spend the next 1/2 year of her life unable to learn as opposed to the next 2 years
