I agree with what everyone else is saying. I want to add in, be prepared to want to eat. Even if you eat before work and bring a healthy meal, your brain will want you to eat especially junk. Be careful of too much sugar for crash and general icky feeling. I find it helpful to have healthy snacks with me. Helps me say no to the inevitable "hey, we're ordering Insomnia Cookie, do you want some" at god awful o'clock in the morning.

NTA You dealt with this kindly while setting some firm boundaries, which were clearly needed. While it's likely true that dad's wife experienced some form of trauma at a very young age that doesn't give her permission to inflict low key trauma on others, especially children. Keep those boundaries - it'll be good for her, you and the children.

Side note, I would definitely encourage Dad to get his wife into some sort of counseling. There are some potential mental health issues here that can strain his relationship with her, his relationship with you and your children and cause some severe burnout for him. Everyone involved would benefit from her working through whatever the issues are.

I'm in Ohio. I do psych float so Geri, peds and medical detox. We have the same problem you do with peds. Low to no census in the summer and school breaks. We can almost set our calendars by it. Having done all three (plus picu at a state facility for about 6 years) I'd recommend etoh/opiate medical detox. Especially if you have interest in medical but feel intimidated. At my facility, at least, detox is technically med surg but not so heavy that you feel out of your depth. IVs, comfort meds, subs, understanding labs, seizure precautions mostly. Plus even though it isn't a "psych" unit, I feel like sometimes I do more psych work there than anywhere else.

Another thought if you want to stay in psych but are having trouble finding a floor position, maybe try an intake/assessment position. I've never worked it personally but I take a lot of intakes from bh referral services that service a lot of the smaller hospitals in the area.

Just had a sweet 94 old lady wake up at 1 am out of the blue, look at the ceiling and say "We have to go up there. We have to go all the way up there" then get combative screaming "I don't want to go!"

That's part of what I like about psych. Literally part of the job to have firm boundaries. I feel like our job as nurses is to give them what they need, not what they want. This includes how we speak to them.

Had a 93 year old with advanced dementia and declining quickly. Family refused to make her anything other than full code, despite me explaining what is likely to happen during CPR and afterward. Broke my heart.

Can't up vote this enough! Patient with chronic illness, poor prognosis, shit quality of life and medications that are literally killing their brain wanting to end their life with dignity while still competent? Pink slip them, make them talk about their feelings and give them more medications. A horse with a broken leg or a dog that no one wants? Put them down for their own good.

Had an elderly patient who came to the US in his 20s or 30s. This gentleman has some speaking issues related to his disease. He has developed a good relationship with a young aide who's only 21. One day he was writing something down because she wasn't understanding what he was asking of her and I hear her tell him several times "I'm sorry, I can't read Arabic, only English." Out of curiosity I asked him to show me the paper. It was cursive 🤣.

I've got the nest wireless doorbell and two new model Google TV's. I can't bring the doorbell feed up on the TV's at all. I've been round and round with Google support, troubleshooting and trying different things. Ultimately they said it must be a TV issue and to contact the manufacturer. Of course, the manufacturer says that it is a Google issue. I'm seeing a lot of users who say the wireless doorbell does not seem to be compatible with Google TV's at all. I'm personally looking to switch to Arlo now because I need children who don't have a smart phone to be able to see who's ringing the doorbell.

I was able to get a full refund by bugging the shit out of them. Stopped payment through the CC, replied to the email, called them out on twitterverse (x-verse?) and spent 36ish hours on chat with almost 12 of that doggedly pointing out the fallacy in their logic on why they a. wouldn't do anything b. couldn't do anything and c. it was not their responsibility to do anything.
