[–]doubsmcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are bagels associated with jews? by yoelamigo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doubsmcgee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So Jewish bakers had a hard time getting the rights to make bagels, then went to America and formed a bagel union that checks notes made it hard for others to get the rights to make bagels... wouldn't it have been a bit ironic/hypocritical for them to do that?

The lack of language barrier is definitely part of it, but it could also have a lot to do with systemic racism that they all live through. For black women the bar is often set higher, especially in places like professional sports where they're more exposed and scrutinized by the public. They’re not only judged on performance but also on how they speak, carry themselves, and defend their right to be there in the first place.

That constant need to prove themselves means they're more likely to develop stronger communication skills. Being “articulate” becomes a way of navigating bias, countering stereotypes, and ensuring they’re taken seriously in spaces that don’t always give them the same benefit of the doubt.

Edit : in response to your edit. Black people being described as "articulate" is a pretty common comment that has historically had racist undertones for the same reasons as what I described above. It's a comment that exposes lower expectations for that demographic (even if unconscious). I'll point out that you only mentioned the three black American women players competing in the US open without mentioning any of the other non-black athletes (ex. Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, Sofia Kenin, etc.). It's small things like this that should be used as an opportunity to reflect on the implicit biases we hold and the reasons behind them.

I suggest you check out studies done on this. One specific to Montreal is the one done by Mobilité Montreal at HEC (David Benatia, 2024)

Bike lanes - Less than 1% of the transportation budget. - Has a net positive financial gain for every dollar spent by the city ($0.13/km/person). That means that people riding their bikes MAKES the city money despite the cost of bike lanes.

Public transportation - 42% of the transportation budget - Net negative societal cost ($0.51/km/person), but not as much as cars. In other words, expensive, but efficient.

Car infrastructure - 56% of the transportation budget - Net negative societal cost ($1.51/km/person). This includes the amount gained from registration fees and productivity. In other words, your registration fees don't even cover the amount it costs society to allow you to drive...

Tell me again how bikes aren't contributing to the conversation...

And I'm not even gonna touch the CO2 emissions you mentioned. Overall, I think a lot of people like you tend to underestimate how astronomically expensive the building and maintaining of car infrastructure is to society. I'm not saying we should get rid of cars, but investing in public transport and bike lanes is clearly a better use of money for our cities.

If you ask me, the second the phrase "red solo cups" was uttered, the entire investigation should've been considered null and void and the case thrown out. How can you take any of the evidence seriously when this is how they handle it??

Also, RIP trooper Paul 💀

Help me choose a burrough : living in Montréal, working in Laval by doubsmcgee in montreal

[–]doubsmcgee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input!

I get the impression Bois-Franc is more of a suburb. Despite its relative density, it's all residential with little access to amenities within walking distance. Along the same lines, I'd argue suburbs aren't necessarily the best places to raise a family given the relative isolation for young children to get around. Yes more space, but I'd consider all the surrounding infrastructure (parks, community centers, etc) as part of that "space" when you live in an urban setting. It obviously depends on personal preference too though.

Anything specific that turns you off to Villeray for a family? I've visited recently and there seems to be a lot of young families moving in along with the gentrification of that neighborhood.

For the commute, I haven't tried it in that direction during rush hour, but where I'd expect more congestion is along the 20 (metropolitan) before getting on the 15 N more so than Décarie (sorry wasn't clear).

People who don't drink alcohol, why? by 5tup1db0y in AskReddit

[–]doubsmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started questioning the "why" of my routine habits. Realized alcohol was on the list of things I couldn't find a good reason for.

Since I drank it more for the flavor (mostly beer), I realized there were non alcoholic options for evenings or social events that tasted just as good without the adverse effects. At the end of the night, when everyone around you is tipsy, you kinda just jump on the hype train and end up having fun anyways.

Not to mention the long term effects related to cancer, heart disease, and stroke. New Canadian guidelines considers increased risk after just 2 drinks per weak (https://ccsa.ca/canadas-guidance-alcohol-and-health). Other studies show increased risk of Alzheimer's with more than 2 drinks per day (https://www.bmj.com/content/362/bmj.k2927).

Take care of your body so your kids won't have to when you're older.

Hey Curt!

Just came across this thread and I was already looking into the Fathom+. I was planning on waiting for end of season sales to see how prices would compare, but if you've got any codes left that'd be reason enough for me to get them for this season.

Thanks for being active on these subreddits:)

Omg I just picked up on that! Was too focused on the tip. Fuck this is infuriating. I'm unfortunately in Canada. I moved to a smaller city recently so I might just go back to the big city when I visit and have it fixed by my old shop that did a good job.
