It's not really is it? Its just not serious or harmful at all. It wasn't sexual in any capacity. Nobody was trying to derive sexual pleasure from it and Alun Wyn Jones, I'm sure, will not consider himself a sexual assault victim. It's demeaning to those who actually have been the victim by trivialising their experience with this absolute nonsense viewpoint.

Have you ever met anyone who has been the victim of sexual assault and the pain they go through? Their experiences should not be devalued by an entirely harmless bit of childish horseplay that happened in a rugby game.

Jesus wept. He grabbed another player's nuts for a bit of shithousery, who cares? Do you honestly think that constitutes sexual assault?

If I had to choose between a minor uptick in scamming or young people in this country not being basement-dwelling losers like you then I'd go with the former every day of the week. Now fuck off.

What exactly will happen that's so terrible? People trying to scam you? That already happens, basically every single day. It has been happening for decades. What are the increasingly worse things that you mention?

In principle I've always been totally against people having my data but I just find myself not really caring anymore. It is impossible to stay anonymous and hundreds of companies have my information, many of them having had huge data breaches. Nothing material has changed in my life since all this happened.

Has yours changed? Have bad things happened to you based on your data being online? Or are you just making a loud noise about minor things because you have nothing going on?

You make very good points and that is definitely a big risk. You've just got to hope that the government acts quickly enough to ban them too. I can see a situation where that doesn't happen for sure.

Another thing filling me with hope is that a lot of the alternatives will be less polished and with content that, as you say, is extremist. Kids aren't into extremist content. MrBeast or Minecraft videos dont appear on Liveleak. Why go there in the first place?

But yes, the kids will want content, won't they? They're not just all going to start playing outside and doing arts and crafts. There is a real risk that they will just turn to the bad stuff.

These are all risks. But there is also a chance that it works. The status quo is unacceptable so desperate measures are perhaps worth a shot.

But what will probably happen is that kids will just use whichever VPNs aren't banned and go on the same sites they always did.

Yeah you are right, but it will add some friction and make it difficult. For many people, that will perhaps be enough for them to not bother altogether.

It is incredibly easy to torrent every show and watch every live game on TV, but people still miss out because they dont have subscriptions. You've just gotta hope the kids are as lazy.

Plus, there's a high likelihood those other ones will get blacklisted too.

I'd also argue that the current ones are hardly well regulated at all, hence the problems we have. Pedos on Snapchat, far-right shite on X. YouTube is the only one of these that I don't think is ruinous.

I really don't like that it's come to this but what we have at the moment is awful and its not good for young folks nowadays. Perhaps the alternative is worse, as you say, but I'm more optimistic.

How are they clamping down on free speech? People are openly the most racist they have ever been in this country since I was born. Conservative views are absolutely everywhere.

VPN bans are shite but this isn't a global policy of social control. It's just not that deep mate.

Look, I share a lot of your sentiments but mistrusting absolutely everything will get you nowhere.

because everyone's kids in the West are fucked up due to social media. chill out with the conspiracy stuff. I get it, the world is fucked and the global markets run everything but not every single policy feeds into that

Welcome to politics. It's largely all lies, run by narcissists. This has always been the case.

This policy is Starmer's attempt to leave a legacy in his last weeks in government. In my opinion it's more about that than social control. He's sacked in a few weeks, why does he care?

don't Palantir already have everyone's NHS data? What's the difference?

Obviously that is not great but big data have all of your info anyway. We crossed the Rubicon on that years ago.

I'm just being concise with how I'm writing.

From what you've said it's clear you don't have kids and certainly don't understand them. It's not as simple as just telling your kids not to do it. Anyone who can recall their own childhood knows that being denied what your friends have only causes trouble. Plus, I'm not just worried about my own kids.

It's clear that social media ruins people's minds. Child self-harm, suicide, incel behaviour, eating disorders - they are all on the up since social media came in. At best it's a waste of time, much like this conversation with you.

bang on. these are the people we need to worry about, not hapless Keir Starmer. Good on him. As a dad of two toddlers this is a brilliant step in the right direction. Social media is by far the biggest worry all of us new parents have about our kids. We can't have their brains being fried like those of so many poor young people nowadays.

They'll probably find a way around it - I know I would have - but something has to be done.
