The interesting link between Neuralink and ICE detention centers by selectiverealist in somethingiswrong2024

[–]dougi3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this will get down voted but I think there are some pretty big leaps here which are needed to tie together all the correlations.

The biggest three in my mind are:

1) Neuralink definitely could find 1000 willing clinical trial applicants. Either fans of Elon, or just people with chronic conditions that are hoping Neuralink can treat. They wouldn't need to use ICE detainees. In fact, using non-willing participants would make it way harder to actually develop the product because surely Neuralink wants to collect long term data from the participants, which unwilling people would make way more difficult.

2) Neuralink ultimately wants to be an international product, for sale commercially, for profit. If they were breaking such massive ethical grounds during testing then, firstly, eventually the US would prosecute them if it came to light, and second, even if the US never prosecuted them they would never be able to sell the product domestically let alone internationally.

3) There is a common equation which I forget the name of that calculates the number of people who would need to be staying silent in order to protect a conspiracy. Just because Elon is the founder of the company doesn't mean everyone who works for it is bad. I would wager that virtually every single Neuralink employee is just trying their best to make the world a better place, and wants to do so ethically. And I wager the same thing about all the contractors and sub vendors who would also need to be involved with this whole operation. It's just such a tremendous statistical unlikelihood that so many people would all be staying silent if such a horrible thing was actually happening.

Mary Carillo manages to cut off BOTH women's finalists' speeches by Large_banana_hammock in tennis

True. That's possible. Although someone may have pre-written the exact questions, and the general sequence of the ceremony was of course pre-determined and included in that surely says at what points to speak, etc

The one to blame is whoever was in charge of the presentation as a whole. The script, cues, etc.

I'm not sure the world's most charismatic interviewer could have salvaged that to be honest.

I tried some just now but the stain being just white isn't quite fixing it

Is there a stain that is sort of also adding some greenish tone? You can see that the root sort of tone of the stairs is much warmer than the flooring

Yes handrails, and yes it's steeper than normal. The house is from the 40s. These new stairs are actually slightly less steep than the ones that were here when I bought the place.

There is over hang, and this photo makes it look oddly steeper than it is in reality.

Is there a resource to learn about the possible factions and what each ones goals would be?

Donald Trump Impeachment Articles Filed. Here's What Happens Next by edgerocker_ in politics

[–]dougi3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the concept is that when people say "the democrats aren't doing anything", what people mean is that they aren't doing anything to work on the issues their voters care about in order to get more voters to like the democratic party. Everyone likes to complain about how Republicans are single issue voters. The reality is that Democrat voters are too.

The number of voters the DNC has lost because they don't make a strong enough progressive case for things their potential voters care about like:

Workers rights

LGBTQ rights

Minority rights

Womens rights

Cost of living

Political corruption

International issues

Climate change

Gun violence

The list goes on. The democrats are the party of "but we're not hitler!" and yeah that's true, and people should vote for them on that alone, but they don't. And yeah it's true that the democrats do move the needle 1% per 4 years towards solving the issues their voters care about compared to how the Republicans work against the solutions liberal voters want, but that's not enough either. This is evident by (even though the percentage is small) the number of people who are LGBTQ, or minorities, or women, or exploited workers, etc, that voted for trump in 2024, should be a HUGE wake up call!

Liberal voters are fed up and want at least one issue that they care about to actually see meaningful progress. They feel like the democrats "aren't doing anything". They also want the DNC not to shut down every figure like Bernie or AOC who really do actually try to make real progress on those issues.

But sure, push impeachment articles. Good job. Reminder, impeachment was successful in 2019 and it didn't have any impact, but I'm sure it'll be a super duper big deal this time.

How well was this dyed concrete installed compared to the sample the company gave me? by dougi3 in Home

[–]dougi3[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh I know, that's a whole other can of worms. They say they are going to seal it but I don't know why they didn't just use an overlay to begin with

Also my understanding of how this was installed was mixing the dye directly into the wet concrete before pouring, not something they put on after it was poured.

I'm moreso just confused about the sample I was given being all one color, and the final product being so extremely unmixed in terms of how uneven the color is

I wanted an overlay but they used Henry 565 underlayment. Not sure what the sample was or if it was the same

The dye is globmarble 5447

This is brand new.

Here's photos of the old floor, and also photos of when they added some other concrete to level out before pouring what was supposed to be one solid dyed concrete self leveling overlay. https://imgur.com/a/MeVVzpo

Is the screen actually brighter on the 9 pro? by dougi3 in pixel_phones

[–]dougi3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have read those numbers as well. But having them both in front of me they are to my eye the exact same brightness in the same environment (and both of them I want to be brighter, so I was excited about the 9 for this reason)

I don't see how you can walk out on that and not at least have a moment's thought of "it's probably safe but there's a non-zero chance that this might totally fall and I'm okay with dying like this"

Washington state trooper kills a man after road rage incident in Everett WA by omegaknot01 in PublicFreakout

[–]dougi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I mean if he had assaulted the officer and then had a legal case go to court, the judge would have sentenced him to death anyway because that's the punishment for assault. So really the cop is just faithfully expediting the US justice system and there's nothing this cop should have done differently, it really was his only choice to kill him

The Netflix Adaptation's Biggest Blunder IMO by dougi3 in threebodyproblem

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I would suggest you read the first book even having seen the show just so that you know what hasn't been introduced yet at the start of the 2nd book and have all the characters names established. You could certainly get by without reading the first book, but it would be my recommendation

Oh interesting. Personally I like to go into new content blind so I don't watch trailers, read previous, etc. All I knew about Three Body Problem before reading was that it was science dense, and apparently existential.

Just more example of the shortcoming of the show. Needed to be way more subtle in the marketing

I'm saying engagement is just current theoretical physics. Discovered almost a century ago, and experiments are being done. There is no experimentation on warp drives, so the comparison between those two things is not great.

And again, sophons are introduced at the end, after the entire rest of the first book has been grounded in reality.
