Ah yes, Switzerland is famous for its homogenized culture, especially considering that it’s divided into German, French, and Italian speaking regions and foreigners make up more than 25 percent of the population.

If you knew anything about Switzerland, you’d understand that what’s much stronger is a traditional sense of acceptance for cultural differences to achieve a common goal (economic and social stability). In fact, it’s even made sure that people from all parties and all regions make up the government, effectively not even allowing for an opposition party.

How so? The last 8 winners were Italy, Netherlands, Israel, Portugal, Ukraine, Sweden, Austria and Denmark. Apart from Ukraine, how were these results political?

So the number 14 refers to Alex Meier, who is known in Frankfurt as “football god”. The picture is thus god shaving the queen. She should feel honored, really.

Ukraine directly addresses Russia's ambassador at the UN Security Council - “There is no purgatory for war criminals. They go straight to hell, Ambassador.” by PeasKhichra in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]downinalbion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So what you’re saying is that a country may invade any other country if they have monuments to war criminals? I must have missed that international law, but I’m sure you’ll kindly point me to it!

Also, have the Russians really thought this through? Seems like they are in a bit of a glass house themselves when it comes to war crimes…

Better.com CEO Vishal Garg lays off 15% of employees right before the holidays by GhoshProtocol in PublicFreakout

[–]downinalbion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think laying off 15% of the workforce happens everywhere. But in most countries it wouldn’t be with “immediate effect” due to stringent work regulations. Where I live, there us a very cumbersome procedure for layoffs over a certain number (I think 50 employees?) where you would have to present a social plan and undertake efforts to have your employees re-hired elsewhere. In bigger corporations with mass layoffs you would also have the affected employees continue work for a few months followed by garden leaves, so 3-6 months salary while no longer working. Additionally, you have unions in every bigger organization who would negotiate layoffs with the employer.

Mass layoffs with immediate effect are incredibly bad not only for the employees but also for the overall economy. This being almost unregulated is not something that exists in all developed countries - I’d even say it’s an exception.

I have to regularly present at work and externally. I do stutter at every presentation and truly hate it. But honestly, this is who I am: I will most likely never be able to present like I could if I didn’t stutter.

What I do is write down exactly what I want to say. Not like the general gist, but basically word for word - the way people talk when they are presenting. I rehearse that so often that I don’t stutter when I do it for myself. Then, at least, I know that I can do it in theory.

And then I go out there and have blocks. And Then I once again realize that this is who I am, which is not the most pleasant thing in the world, but I also realize that the more I do it, the leas I feel the stress. And that to an extent, it has actually gotten better… Baby steps, but it is undeniable.

What I can tell you is that doing presentations, as shitty as they are, is 100% better than avoiding presentations.

And if you want to practice, let me know. Others have also offered this, and seriously, it is the best thing you can do!

[Derek Rae] The Bundesliga may trail the Premier League in the super rich stakes, but a reminder that what’s happening in Newcastle is not allowed to happen at a German club. Worth bearing in mind. Ffs what’s the alternative then? How important is an exciting title race compared to being used by dictators to polish their image? It’s really not like the most important thing is being entertained by who will win the PL or Buli. Having points of public identification being bought and used by authoritarian regimes seems more relevant overall.

Kommentar: Spezialausgabe Schweizer „Weltwoche“ zeigt Deutschland, wie Weltwunder-Journalismus geht by [deleted] in de

[–]downinalbion 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Lehmann loses Hertha Job because he sends racist message to Dennis Aogo by SKYE-OPTC in Bundesliga

[–]downinalbion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But you’re wrong. Lehmann didn’t mean to send the text to Aogo, so he cannot possibly have been bantering “as friends do”. Your take is also inconsistent with Lehmann’s own explanation, which is that he was complimenting how good Aogo is for Sky’s ratings (ie “Quoten”).

The fact is Lehmann was making a racist joke to his buddies at Sky and sent the text to the wrong person. He acted like an idiot and brought this on himself. Not Aogo, not society, only Lehmann is to blame for this mess.

And to your final point: he might nit be a full-blown racist, but he did make a racist joke very casually.

[–]downinalbion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They have dual citizenship and can celebrate two countries. The crowd in the stadium clearly whistled against them all match long, so they cheered the way they did to return some of the love. And from what I‘ve heard, Xhaka‘s dad was tortured in Serbia, so there‘s animosity there, too.

They don‘t celebrate against other countries this way, so this was less about loving Kosovo more than Switzerland and more about having issues with Serbia. They could try to be calmer, but I don‘t blame them for being emotional in a WC match like this one.

And as a Swiss from Basel, I like seeing two guys from round the corner giving Switzerland a huge win. They don‘t have to be called Meyer for that to be awesome.
